I've seen many a dipso stand on a street corner and rant nonsensically, same as Greta did at the UN. I'm fairly sure a dipso wouldn't care if s/he was addressing the wall or the UN.

I'm talking about the world stage not a street corner or boards for that matter

Its the scientists using verifiable science that will always make the strongest case.

Not a privileged western teenager telling everyone her childhood has been ruined, before embarking on a tour of North America.

She's not deprived, her childhood was not ruined, so why tell lies?

Unless you've been living in a cave with no access to the news for the last 10 years, you cannot avoid the effects of climate change.

The scientists have been talking for decades and they've been ignored by governments, corporations and an indifferent public.

What does that tell you about society that they have been ignored but people listen to a wealthy kid? Kids being used to manipulate people....and then they talk about Russian propaganda!

i'm not an expert in Aspergers but is it not possible that a single issue such as the environment could bother a child with that condition, and occupy a lot of head space?

I'm no expert either, but it is possible yes.

Look at some of the teenagers who have come up with inventions to clean up waste in the ocean. This is the kind of people we need, people who come up with ideas and solutions, rather than going on about the problem which we all already know about.

Trump, Putin and the rest have ignored her. Trump this week is trying to stop California from setting its own emissions limits. Putin said she doesn't understand a complex world.

The really big players have ignored her.

Developing nations like China and India will be the really big polluters this century. When will she head there and make a big deal of it?

You cannot cut back emissions overnight. It takes decades of research and work to do it. Just look at the very slow progress developing affordable electric cars with significant range and even they are not environmentally friendly if you factor in construction.

The EU will make vague commitments, then sign up to the disastrous Mercosur.

Agreed. They will pay lip service to it, as will all governments. If they actually took a stand, they wouldn't be re-elected. At least Greta is trying to call them out on it.

Of course she does. Even in the quote you keep using about her childhood, she thinks of others. Everyone chops off the end to suit them.

"You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying."

She agrees she is one of the lucky ones. So you agree with her on something :)

No-one stole her dreams or her childhood.

I'm beginning to suspect someone else wrote or helped her with that speech. Its completely overly dramatic.

I only wish I had her childhood, travelling the world and being celebrated and probably winning a Nobel Prize.

It's clear it's troublesome for her. She visibly breaks down when speaking about trees being cut down.

It's funny she goes "people are dying". Yes Greta, people are dying through wars, conflicts and homelessness every day and there isn't any protests from kids is there?

We do need a 16 year old to champion[ urgent action on climate change in the absence of any other champion.

And most people from Dublin really couldn't care less. Governments love climate change histrionics, they actually encourage it, diverts attention away from real ecological problems on the doorstep, as well as being an excuse to take more of our money.

They took more than enough money off people in Dublin and beyond to more than cover the cost of not pumping **** into the sea.

Even with it you may not be celebrated or get a Nobel prize. That's her using her childhood for the better good. Fair play to her.

Greta devotees aren't talking about the $hit dumping in Dublin, they are chanting climate change slogans.

They seem to not want to listen to scientists when it comes to this gender crap

The Nobel Prize people. And the 7 Million marching.

I think tintin should worry more about people stealing her adulthood. She's going to be stuck in childhood forever due to being seen as this child prodigy who saved the planet.

Not only that, all they're chanting is "climate change has got to go"

About as useful as me saying homelessness has to go.

Where were they last Friday? Will they be out tomorrow?? Or was it a one time thing to feel good about themselves??

Wow, if only we properly funded the treatment of water and punished polluters, something like, I dunno, a water charge maybe? (The same water charge rejected by many if not most Irish people. And probably some of the very same people jumping on the Thunberg bandwagon).

    Here's a prime example.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/politics/paul-murphy-sets-up-new-political-group-called-rise-1.4035062
A new left-wing group called Rise has been set up by Dublin TD Paul Murphy following his departure from the Socialist Party last week.
Setting out the group’s political objectives in Dublin on Monday, Mr Murphy, and four members of the new group said it would try to build a new socialist movement in Irish society.
The group is aiming to develop a “green new deal” with socialist policies.

Murphy has now jumped on the Green bandwagon, only after opposing water charges to the end. The arch populist.

Everyone is in favour of making changes until they have to pay for it and then you see their real colours.

If Greta looked like this then all the guys who are knocking her would be praising her.
It's a funny olde world, Greta's cause is a noble one, but people are getting personal with her, knocking her, not her cause
