Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Only trophy this season

Deserved after the dive in injury time.

Good to get that Klopp needs to win a trophy off the back after one league game. 5 cups maybe this year.

Does this count as a trophy? It's a friend surely. Euro version of the community shield. Entertaining game of football though.

    Guy’s a serial trophy winner.

Adrian is off his line for every penalty. If if he saves one, it will be pulled back

In fairness he was well off his line for the last pen.

A bit tough for the Chelsea kid (if Abraham still counts as young) but as the VAR was so flipping sh'ite I think we'll claim that as a moral as well as an actual victory. Soton will be happy with that too unfortunately.

European teams take it seriously. It’s a trophy, another onto the Wall of Champions. League might be out of reach if City hit almost 100pts again, so take all others.

    Deserves it for diving

And he was off his line, wasn't pulled back.

Seems like this thing will go down with the 6 second rule, as things that worked but we'll just forget about it because some ex-pros complained about it on television

Whatever about the result there's no way a game like that should go to extra time. Straight to pens if a draw after 90 mins.

Positives for both sides really. It's another cup for Liverpool and Klopp, and it will give Chelsea players and fans renewed faith in Lampard after the United loss. With Kante in the DM role they ought to be a tough opponent for everyone, and Rudiger returning to the defence should also help them.

Disastrous evening for both sides really. 120 mins so early in the season, games at the weekend. All for the European equivalent of the community shield.

A tad dramatic, no? Inconvenient at worst.

Enjoyable game to watch, had a lot of drama. Think Liverpool just about deserved it, considering that Chelsea penalty was very dubious. Jurgen Klopp is joy to watch in his interviews.

    Chelsea youngsters look promising.

The extra time didnt suit both teams.

Yeah madness, whatever about the PL season being only 1 game in.. La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga are yet to start. To many it could be their first comptitive game of the season. 120mins is a big ask.

Dear footballer on 100-200k a week...apologies for expecting you to put in an extra 2 hours in a glorified friendly tonight.

It's not a big ask at all. But if it is, clubs can always send out the kids in the CL and aim to lose to avoid the inconveniences that come with success.

I think the reasoning behind is that the UEFA Super Cup is classed as an officially recognised cup game & trophy, hence the extra time + pens and normal 3+1 subs.

Whereas the Charity Shield is classed as a friendly, hence the straight to pens and you are allowed to make extra subs.

Also a nice €4.5m winners prize & trophy!

They've already said that in the PL use of VAR, that it won't be used to see if a keeper is off his line - if the ref doesn't spot it, it'll be allowed to stand.

I presume they've decided to do the same in Europe? Right call imo really, it's one of those things where the keeper is up against it enough without making it even harder... as long as he's not taking the piss enough for the ref to clearly see, then it's grand.

It's a recognized uefa trophy, the charity shield isn't and has friendly regulations on draws and substitutions. It's not a particularly important trophy but still one to stick in the cabinet.

Tell it to Adrian it's not important, he thinks he win the CL.

I saw that both teams get €3.5m, and the winner gets an extra €1m.
Financially more lucrative than either domestic Cup.

The PL are not doing it but I'm pretty sure it will be in Europe. The only reason why the PL are not using it is because if the fuss kicked up over Scotland in the world cup. The annoying thing is that it actually worked very well after the group stages. The keepers were glued to their lines in the knockouts.

But as I said previously, it will probably go to dogs like the rather popular 6 second rule for keepers

All this talk about players being tired, not up to speed etc etc...

Maybe then, don't drag your squad around the world in pre-season.

Also have a proper international calender linked to the club calendar, so you don't have guys playing in an afcon final and then their club season starts less that 3 weeks later.

Or do what fergie did, and not buy African players due to the travel( and with Afcon being played during the season back in the day)

Is it 12 subs for all European club competitions this year or only finals?

The problem is that most of the key members of the squad weren't even available for the pre-season tour 'around the world'.

That would be lovely, and should be the case, but there's not much a club can do about it...

You can bet your last euro that clubs will be off playing friendlies during the winter break

Playing a friendly isn't the same as playing a league match. Players would be training during a winter break anyway. A game to keep up fitness would be good. And if a player is carrying a slight knock there is no need to risk them like you would for a league/cup game.

I won't take your money coz I like you.
They won't be playing friendlies, FA won't license any games during this period.

I say Liverpool & West Ham may not have a week off, their game will be postponed in December and that would be the a great time to get fit it in.
