It's not even cold. I am just wearing a light jacket and it's fine. Wish it was cold.

It isn`t really any colder than it should be in mid January. There have been some exceptionally mild conditions for much of the winter so far so maybe it seems that way to you now.

Went for a walk earlier, all of a sudden the weather turned, the rain came and it became extremely gusty it nearly tossed me. Must have been a squall of some sort. -SW Donegal

We've had very little cold this winter. All we have to show for this winter is a few patchy frosts. It's mostly been mild, it just feels cold due to wet and windy days or short lived cool shots in between the low pressures. December finished milder than average and this January could finish several degrees above average if the general mild theme holds to the end of the month.

This winter has been quite similar to last winters very mild conditions. February brought near record breaking warm conditions last year, could we see the same this year? We paid for it with a cold Spring and cold June. I hope this is not repeated again this Spring/June!

There was very heavy showers in cork city today, almost like sleet. Got soaked in two of them which came out of the blue

Models still showing the potential for some excessively high MSLP readings early next week, with the latest model run showing the 1048 hPa isobar encompassing much of the SE for a time.

    I7xGbTu.png

Looked up the January record on the Met Eireann site and it comes it at 1051.9 hPa which was recorded in Valentia on the 28th all the way back in 1905.

    https://www.met.ie/climate/weather-extreme-records

Doubtful we will come close to this value this time around but all in all, still the potential for some impressive readings.

Windy and wet overnight until mid morning and cleared to a mostly breezy bight day apart from a couple of local showers.

Pic: Shower to the E of Tralee about 14.00 with low winter sunlight cast on the building. No rain in the town center at this time.

It is one of the great events that students will love when responsible adults show up.

    https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/norway/tromso

In Tromso, Norway the Sun came into view yesterday for the first time since November 28th 2019 as the circle with the North Pole at its centre where the Sun is completely out of sight begins to shrink until the March Equinox when it disappears entirely to be replaced by an expanding circle where the Sun is constantly in view.

    https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/norway/hammerfest

Hammerfest ,closer to the North polar centre, experiences a longer stretch where the Sun is out of view and inhabitants there haven't seen the Sun since November 23rd with sunrise happening in a number of days from today or around the 21st January.

The expansion and contraction of circles where the Sun is constantly in view or out of sight with the North or South Poles at the centre of this expansion/contraction from Equinox to Solstice and back to Equinox is one of those lovely observations which incorporates the expansion and contraction of Arctic sea ice at the North Polar latitude.

As the North Pole continues to turn closer to the planet's circle of illumination, the circle where the Sun is out of view will continue to shrink and finally the North Pole itself will experience the one and only sunrise in 2020 while people at the Antarctic South Pole station will experience the only sunset this year.

Life is too short to be caught up the the dreary world of modelers

3rd headline on rte's flagship radio one news at one

4th item was shootings in north Dublin

    What the actual fuck :D

Looking forward to putting on a damp wetsuit in the morning and catching a few waves.
Nothing like a frosty morning and the sea temperature warmer than the air temperature.
    The steam will be rising.
    That's for sure.
Offshore breeze head high waves, and nice clean glassy swell.

For those that have eyes on the mountain peaks, is there much snow/ice and how high up?

If you're interested in the Wicklow mountains, snowline today is about 700m.

Latest model run (ICON) still going for some 1048 hPa readings early next week in the SE:

    R6Fuj1y.png

If on course, stations to watch would be Johnstown, Cork, Oak Park and possibly the Dublin stations & Gurteen.

If not on course, then ignore above. But should be a good time to fine tune any wall barometers as the pressure will be high and stable.

today was a bit showery, however they were very light. Looking forward to several days, almost a week of dry and settled conditions. We have been wishing for some proper dryness for months now and this could be the first proper high pressure we've had since July?
