Very cold Galway looks like there might be some fog starting to form already as the sun sets...might end up getting some freezing fog sure...

Certainly one of my favourite days of the winter so far. A cool, crisp and pleasant dry day with ice already forming on the car as soon as the sun went down. This spell of high pressure is a nice reprieve from the Atlantic frontal systems.
Below a picture taken moments after sunset in Lough Lannagh, Castlebar this eve.

Yeah Dan, I’m having erratic temperatures here all evening despite being calm too!

Subtle winds around 10m are doing this causing downwelling of air under high pressure (which has breached 1040hPa here now). There is shallow fog around here and there seems to be some inversion cap in places at roof height of standard two-storey houses.

They tend to close golf courses if the ground is frozen.

Several stations at 1040 hPa at 2300: Athlone Costume Barracks, Cork Airport, Gurteen, Moore Park, Mullingar, Oak Park. Exact figures show Cork Airport the highest on 1040.3 hPa.

Lowest is 1037 hPa at Donegal Airport and Malin Head.

Freezing fog at Shannon Airport. Visibility 100 metres

Coastal and upland stations are by-and-large above freezing: https://www.xcweather.co.uk/observations

Mt Dillon's -4c along with Benson, England top the cold temperatures table.

I dont want to come across as authoritative and telling people what they should do with their own pets but tonight in our neck of the woods the temperature will plummet to -4 degrees Centigrade or even colder and there are still people who will leave their dogs and other small animals out in the cold tonight , in the back yard or just letting them roam the streets . But could pet owners just imagine would they like to be outside sleeping in these temperatures. Just because dogs have fur coats this dose not necessarily mean they will survive or not be caused pain from the frost , especially animals like short haired dogs and the like . plus the frost (as baking hot tarmac in the summer) can damage the pads of their paws.

If you are one of these pet owners who don't allow dogs into the house , would you please even consider a dry and draught free shed or garage for them to sleep in when temperatures fall like this with preferably some kid of heat and a nice bed and some blankets - its only the humane thing to do on nights like this .

And if you hear your dog or other dogs in the distance tonight moaning/whining/barking and crying its a further indication that they are cold and need to come in.

    Thank you.

Not a dog owner but a cat owner here Andy and she's in here asleep by the stove since 7 pm this evening.

Fog thickening here in South Laois. Hit -4.0c earlier, but yo-yoing between -3c and -4c since. Wouldn't rule out a -6c or -7c by dawn at this rate.
