Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah especially since that's fine to say, whereas "coloured people" is racist ?
Now I'm not saying I want to say "coloured" I am aware of the historical aspects to it, but isn't it really the same fucking thing ?

Of course it's the same thing, it's just torturing language for the sake of it, it's beyond ridiculous.

Also if I don't know someone's name I see nothing wrong with calling them by their actual colour, (if they're white they're white, if they're brown they're brown). It's only to help identify who they actually are, people's colour is a pretty significant feature.

    I don,t care about social media, facebook,instagram,
i think the irish language is a waste of money.
    it should be optional,
let people choose tech or economics or music as a subject instead.
Unless you want to work in rte, or tg4, or as a teacher,
irish will be of no use to you at all when you leave school .
99 per cent of employers do not care at all that you learned irish,
big deal, no use in a job.
They will pick an employee with knowledge of tech or science or maybe some experience in customer service .
French, italian, chinese language skills will actually help you get a job.
eg languages that real people actually speak in the real world.
i have never heard anyone speak irish in dublin ,
unless its on some program on rte .

By don't give a shit I take it you mean don't care either way. In which case I'd say gay marriage. Until fairly recently it never even crossed my mind that homosexuals would want to get married. It doesn't bother me that they now can get married.

I find it weird how everyone suddenly started acting like gay marriage not being allowed was the biggest injustice in the world. I'm willing to bet the majority of heterosexual people my age never even gave 'marriage equality' a second thought for most of their lives.

    I don,t care about fashion,
i just buy jeans, jackets that look good, and are comfortable
fashion changes every year, its basicly, buy new stuff
we need to make more money.
Throw away your phone, buy this years model,
the new iphone has 3 camera,s and an apple credit card.
im not a pro photographer , i don,t need to take 4k hdr photos at night.
The phone i bought 2 years ago works fine.
i dont see the point of apple watch,s ,
so i,m gonna start reading txts on a one inch screen,
no thanks , i ,ll just use my phone.

I Dont care about new phones that have maybe a 10 per cent better camera,
they all use the same app,s .
is there any phone that is really worth 1000 euro,
or is it just a status symbol ,
Like buying 300 euro sneakers that have the right logo on them.
i don,t need another device that uses weird apps and needs to be charged
    every day.

I cannot see the point of tattoo,s .
is it showing off or its like look at all these tatoo,s on my arm ,neck.
    i,m so tough .
or maybe i,m a serial killer who works in a coffee shop.
Or i,m a middle class idiot who wants some street cred.

Most tatto,s just look ugly to me .

i would be happy if 99 per cent of students learned french, latin ,carpentry anything but irish.

I own a property ..and thanks to the homeless crisis i and the risk of being sued for discrimination i had to show to 128 ...yes ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT PEOPLE to show i wasn't discriminating.

I then had to ring at least half of those back to further show i was not discriminating.

That is down the homeless crisis.

You try showing a flat to 128 people in 12 days.

I'd have no problem dong that as long as I'm, like most LL's, getting a ton of money every month for it.

I know plenty of landlords myself. Many of them contribute nothing to society except sit on their arses collecting rent and blame “the market” for arbitrarily hiking it up whenever they feel like it.

Fancying themselves as tycoons even though the majority of them either inherited their property or lucked into ownership when property was cheap. Suggest that they pay tax on their income and they’ll virtually choke on their cigar smoke with laughter.

Meanwhile how many young families can barely afford to pay their rent or save up for a mortgage? I suppose that’s not the landlords fault. It’s the government or that pesky “market” again.

They shouldn’t exist is what I am saying. Or they should be so heavily regulated they virtually need to beg the State if they want to raise the rent.

As for that “it’s a business, not a charity” comment: wake up. We need to stop this envious regard for anyone who’s making money like they’re winning the game of life. People have a right for a place to live but landlords are hoarding all the property. Landlords are hurting society to fill their own pockets. Landlords, my friend, are scum.

The notion that private Landlords are rolling around in their profits, or indeed that they are sitting on inherited property is delusional.
Usually spouted by someone with no clue as to the costs involved be they capital, ongoing or opportunity.

People on tv, in magazines all the so called “celebs”, don’t really watch tv at all.

GAA, I know people live for it, I really don’t want to hear about it.

Brands, whatever people think I are “current fashion” trends, “what’s in”, all that rubbish. I’m still wearing some clothes I bought 25 years ago.

Homelessness, it’s a lack of personal responsibility crisis rather than a lack of homes. People were told form early school days to work hard and provide for themselves but soo many decided not to, shock horror everyone was right and they have ruined their lives by living like rats in a sewer.

Climate change, or climate crisis as it's now called.

The Earth has been heating and cooling for millions of not billions of years with and without human intervention.

    Let it

Let species adapt as they have done for millions if not billions of years.

We are humans are really arrogant if we think we can stop it or if we believe it's up to us to dictate what the world should look like inn the future.

    Does it?
Would you care to explain how? In something other than a soundbite?

As a private landlord, I'm happy to discuss the economic consequences of my wife and I having the temerity to not immediately donate her house to the State/Novas/GoFundMe on our marriage.

As for the piles of profit, I've yet to come across any of those and given I do the Tax return I am fairly certain it's also not just resting in an account somewhere.
I've got to be managing my property wrong!
There's no ton of money left to me after mortgage, contingency, costs and taxes are covered.

We do have the future benefit of an appreciating (for the time being at least) asset, that will hopefully go a long way towards ensuring both a comfortable retirement for my wife and I, aswell as ensuring that come what may we have a contingency if we need it.

We are hands off, property is in an RPZ and is managed by an agency.

There is still a large cohort of people who are accidental landlords, who had to move for work and other reasons but couldn't bring their house with them.
You seem to have confused 19th Century Hiberno-English absentee landlordism, with the actual reality of what being a landlord is.

I don't know of too many grand estate owners these days, unless it's a version of a Renault Mégane!Much the opposite of your claim that many are sitting on property inherited and did nothing for it.
I grew up on a council estate, I'm the only member of my immediate family who owns any property and I worked hard to be able to.

Many of the "scum" landlords you refer to are landlords solely because selling a house bought in 2006/7/8 up until quite recently anywhere other than Dublin meant crystallizing a loss.

So people moved and rented out their homes.
Rent is driven by market forces, the market in Ireland is distorted by government supplements and this places an artificial floor on rents.
That is a significant factor in driving rents, then couple that with the same government enacting a policy of RPZ controls that limits the maximum...

The policy drives both an absolute minimum for a unit of rent allowance plus the minimum contribution, and a maximum in RPZ zones of versus 3 similar and 4% a year.

Price is a function of supply v demand.
Private landlords don't control either of those, nor are they distorting the market with subsidies.

The market is fúcked, I am immensely lucky (and happy) I don't rent my home.
Both as currently I am unable to work, and as I really do value the security that owning our home affords.
But I worked very hard to be in this position and went short a lot of things to do it.

The buck needs to stop with the policy makers rather than those who were left trying to service their debt and who made homes available for rent.
Unless someone has no mortgage, the belief that renting a property equals a pile of risk free cash, is very, very mistaken.
Even for mortgage free property for private landlords, the tax burden and the actual opportunity costs of locked away capital and maintenance costs do impact hugely on the returns.
Being your own sinking fund is far from cheap.

But I'm sure that you Woke, can explain to us all the dangers of our greedy capitalism and how we are fuelling the homeless crisis?

    Us!?
The small private landlords, the ones struggling to ensure our bills are paid, our property maintained and our tenants happy...

We clearly are the problem ;)
