Making Lego Mosaics

Anyone on the forum have any experience of creating mosaics with lego?

I'm looking to create a fairly large (96 x 96 stud mosaic). I've been using LDDMC to get the image right and it seems okay but will definitely need some tweaking.

One feature it seems to be missing, however, is the ability to generate a bill of materials in anything other than 1x1 tiles when it seems obvious to me that identifying places in the picture where a 1x2, 2x2, 1x4 etc. would fit the image (and help keep costs down - my first estimate from Bricklink came to over a grand! ).

Any hints / tips / suggestions?

I sold lots of parts to a guy who specialises in mosaics based in Limerick. Dont have his contact details now (nor would I share without permission) but I think there is an Irish Lego group online (some members on this forum I'd guess) and you could find him easily enough from there. I've only been to one event and he was displaying his stuff. Very cool.

We use a program called brickaizer that is pretty decent. It lets you enter custom measurements and will provide you with a list of required bricks as well as an image to use as "instructions".

You get a 14 free trial of the program and after that I think it's €50 to buy (not sure if it's an annual or once off purchase).

We're currently working on a mosaic that is 160cm by 120cm and it was dead easy using that program.

Downloaded a copy and tbh, it's doesn't seem to be anywhere near LDDMC at generating a mosaic from a photo. It also seems to be limited to a maximum of 70 x 70 studs.

How did you work around the limitations? Splitting the mosaic into sections? Am I missing something in the settings to improve the accuracy of the render?

I can't recall exactly where the settings are but there is definitely an option to change the size as our mosaic is 160cm x 120cm from one image.

It also depends on the quality of the original image.
