The achievement in getting a FAI Senior Cap is the greatest achievement in Irish sport as it is so difficult to beat off the large numbers competing for each spot.

That is undeniably true but I find it hard to reconcile to the sad mediocrity on display when Ireland play. I find it so dull and can't quite reconcile it to the fact that all the players are the best of the best of the best.

There is always an expectation that our football team should be doing far better than they have been doing. I reckon over a 20 year period we are punching way above countries with an equal population size.

I think we're performing more or less at the level we should be considering the playing population. These things come in cycles. We had a great generation 30 years ago. You never know what's coming in the next 10 years.

When we come third in a Euro or World Cup Qualifying Group after being seeded third, why do we think that this is a disaster? This is as was predicted.

Agreed. I think football fan's expectations are unreasonably high these days, maybe due to saturation coverage on TV. It's like the same reason West Ham's fans complained a couple of years ago that they weren't happy winning, they wanted to win while playing entertaining football. As if West Ham had ever in their history done that.

People comparing our soccer and rugby teams are not comparing like with like. The rugby is like hurling, there are only a handful of top teams and games usually go as expected.

Because Ireland and thier fans got used to punching above thier weight. I would say that the level Ireland are at now in world football is about where they should be.

Given the size of population. Also, lack of a well supported domestic league, and an over dependence on the English football system.
Plus there is not a proper culture of technical football in Irish soccer. It shows in the players that are produced, or lack thereof.

Then on top of this, players leave Ireland way too young for England instead of doing a bit of maturing first until thier early 20's. Plus by then the good players might realise there is other options besides England. Portugal, Belgium, France, Holland or Germany, for example. At worst they could learn a second language well and experience a different culture.

Irish football fans who do not support the LOI and parents who let thier kids head for England at a very young age, should shoulder some of the blame involving the state of Irish football. (Unpopular opinion part)

As there is no consistently decent Irish football structure/pathway as a result. In other words a stronger Irish league keeping players longer and nurturing them. Instead of the hit and miss England trip. Players would command larger transfer fees if kept longer in Ireland as well.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Unpopular opinion : supermarkets and airport security should absolutely have a seperate queue for lone travellers who are men aged 18-65 and women aged 25-40. The staff operating these lanes should be dull and quiet yet efficient.

Almost every queue im ever in grinds to an excruciating halt due to a middle aged or older woman having a moan, some hold up related to kids or an elderly person just unable to comply with standard procedures or rules clearly laid out.

Task oriented, straight forward, rule compliant people would whizz through that queue at 4x the speed of the unfortunate unsegregated queue.

Now im not saying every woman over 40 or every man over 65 is going to cause a delay, but it would be too hard to screen for the other factors in advance. When queuing is more prominent than ever, we need segregation for the sake of efficiency.

Why cut women off at 40? Are all women over 40 middle aged but men not till they're 65?

if every (amateur, they all are) gaa player got a bit more greedy, the Irish rugby team and association football team would be a whole lot better. (lets face it, the GAA make an absolute fortune, and wont pay the people who make that possible). greedy asreholes i call them.

plus our pick is only about the same size as that of wales , soccer is the number one sport in scotland , here its a distant second behind GAA

An Express lane for people with their shít together and a small single item or no cabin baggage would be a great idea. The amount of fcuking around at airport security with clueless people you'd think it was their first time in their lives getting on a plane.

But these "clueless people" want their slice of drama too. Their very own soap opera.

This old argument about the GAA being greedy. Who may I ask in the GAA is making a fortune? You can see their financial accounts every year and where the money goes. Everything is transparent. You'd swear the way people go on that the GAA should never try and attain monetary gain because the players don't get paid. Where do you think clubs up and down the county get money from.

Even the GAA president can only receive a wage that is the same as from the job he/she left to become president. Therefore, you're unlikely to ever get someone working in the GAA to ever attain a salary anything like what Delaney had for the FAI.

I actually like that the GAA is amateur. It's something unique in a world where money has eroded the ethos of many sports. It's for the same reason that I like international soccer - players are actually playing for teams that represent them in some shape or form rather than playing for a team who can pay them the most.

I'm delighted that Christmas will be curtailed and different this year.

There is usually too much fake sentiment and playing happy families. Socialising is often a nightmare and the obligation to be all chirpy and delighted around people you rarely see otherwise is annoying. We aren't all sociable people, and to not be doesn't make you a grinch either.

Splashing the cash seems unnecessary this year too.

Bring on a quiet, cheap Christmas. Bottles of beer at home, the odd board game and football on the telly will do me nicely :D

People have a right to be whatever they like during Xmas.

Christmas with the Kranks was a movie about a family unfortunate to live in a neighbourhood populated by Xmas Nazis.

And consciously changing words like coloured to POC is a part of that power grab? How does it work?

Replace fiction with facts? Pretty sure you don’t want to do that. In my parish the common belief was that a certain business man was making great money out of his involvement with the GAA, indeed so much so that he was regularly granted credit on it, right up to the day he declared bankruptcy!
