The gear selector is in a perfect position on the ID3/4 once you get used to it. You don't even have to take your hands off the wheel if switching between D/B/R.

And how many times would you be moving while switching between reverse and D/B?

You never know when you might need to do some evasive driving :D

    A few times between D and R.

By having it up behind the steering wheel it keeps the centre console for storage.

NAVA. Still plenty of room in the centre console :)

And when would you be moving and going between D and R?

I think he means without stopping the car ;)

I did that once in the Leaf (in safe conditions) to see what would happen

It turns out it works as expected and the car goes instantly from forward to reverse

    I wouldn't recommend it

But less space than if you have the gear selector beside the wheel :)

On a daily basis? Reversing out of my drive, reversing into my space at work, parallel parking at the shop, reversing into a parking space when I bring the dogs for a walk, parallel parking at my dad's etc.

    Nope.

    Totally misunderstood my question.

When are you moving forward while in D or B, and then while still moving forward change to R?

I don't understand what you mean? Why would you do that while moving and why would it affect the location of the lever

I think yours, mine and dave oc's were all in the same batch and are probably going to arrive at the same time

Hopefully they're all parked together on the same boat at the moment :)

Mine is on the ship... :D

Fingers crossed mine is on that boat

Agree, once you get used to it, seems backward any other place. Our Ioniq has buttons, which I still have to look down at occasionally when changing.
And you can go from reverse to forward without stopping, at slow speeds, smoothly, on the ID.3 and I presume the ID.4.

Ugh, is there only the 2 options? The SEAI grant is a killer!

The money is madness I think. But I know I’ll end up getting one and they will sell in droves.

Order before July 1st to avoid losing the grant above €60,000 is what I’m hearing.

I use B all the time. It's so nice to drive with. Why you use D out of interest?

I use D on main roads and B on back roads.

Guys it's neither here nor there

    But
There's a white id4 in intel the last while.
    Black roof.

It's genuinely the second EV that I like the exterior.
It's a lovely car, far above the tiguan.

    Smashing car.
Well wear to all the purchasers to date.
I'll be looking for a clean secondhand in 3 years!!!!

    (First is the Honda e)

I don't switch between them at all. I like D mode. Push, coast, and auto slowing down with intelligent regen.

I use B all the time in the Leaf but I could see myself being converted to D with the smart regen

Auto slowing down? I haven't noticed that. Though I haven't used D much at all.

I think the Honda E is one of best looking EVs around. It's short range, charges slow and is overpriced but it looks amazing and you can toast a sandwich while driving, which is awesome :)

ID.4 is a good looking car too (admittedly I'm biased). Slightly more down to earth and regrettably doesn't have an on board inverter, so no on the road toasties

ID.4 completed the NORRA 1000 rally

    https://www.carscoops.com/2021/05/vw-id-4-successfully-completes-norra-1000-in-baja-peninsula/

One interesting thing is they recharged the car during transport between stages by towing it and generating electricity using the motor

I remember a few people were doing this with the Leaf as a way to get a quick recharge if they ran out of battery. Nissan shut it down pretty quickly saying it'll break the car somehow

I wonder if VW are a bit more forgiving of that

In a video posted here a couple of days back they mentioned towing to get charge. IIRC they said VW didn't have an opinion on it as they'd not tried it themselves. ID.4... not fully tested?

I know in the manual it says the car can be towed short distances, I think it said something like 50km.

It didn't mention charging, in fact it specifically says to put the car in N which presumably would stop the regen function

I guess as you say, it's something VW haven't tested. So it's possible, but could also void the warranty
