McGrath's tackle on the line saved an embarrassing defeat.

The fact it was better than last week doesn't detract from how concerning it was tbh

Please explain how an away defeat in wales by potentially a few points in a warm up match would be embarrassing?

Ireland win against Wales at home. Both second string sides. Ireland owned the first half, Wales the second. Be loads of people reacting to that game like it is a loss but there was positives there.
They way I would look at it is the negatives in teams second half performance would glaringly outweigh the few positive individual performances.

A win away to the #1 ranked team in the world. We'll take it.

Aki and Kilcoyne on the plane. You'd never have McGrath before Kilcoyne now. Astonishing that Killer has leap frogged McGrath.

So who gets in now beirne or Kleyn ?

    Toner always looks like that

Toner is the opposite to an impact player. Solid, hard working, gets through a lot of work. He’s important in a team. But he’s not a peaky impact man.him coming on off the bench is more about getting him game time than winning the game through an impact sub. Unfortunately for Henderson, he’s about as impactful as a second row sub can be. I’d say that will be his role.

I'd be considering Ruddock instead of Conan to be honest.

Apparently Best made 12 tackles while he was on.

Probably made nearly half of them when defending on the line.
    I’m spitting he didn’t get a lineout.

Dave Kearney will be sickened. An entire half to try and prove something and he didn't get a single touch on the ball.

Our attack was dreadful tbh. That Wales defense was shocking at times and we scored one try on attack from play.

Wales were always going to improve in that last half hour at home. It would be unrealistic to expect us to run out 15-20 point winners in Cardiff.....the Welsh improved a good bit

  • Registered Users Posts: 401 ✭✭Tommybojangles

The negativity is gas. Huge improvement from last week, one more game next week for a team closer to first choice. Still far from ideal but certainly not "deplorable " or embarrassing.

Jack lucky enough to get man of the match but as William's said noone really put in a top quality 80 and Jack did enough in the his better spells to put Ireland in a winning position

Yes Dillane would me my choice of the three.

Well, that was the last chance to get on the plane. The squad has to be finalised on Monday and it'll be announced after the home game. We'll get the leak before then.

    Here's my 31:

Props: Healy, Kilcoyne, Porter, Furlong and Ryan.

    Hookers: Best, Scannell and Cronin.

Locks: Henderson, Ryan, Toner and Beirne.

Back row: VdF, POM, Stander, Nordi, Conan.

Halfback: Sexton, Murray, Marmion, Carbery, Carty.

    Centres: Addison, Ringrose, Aki, Henshaw.

Back five: Kearney, Earls, Stockdale, Conway and Larmour.

At this point I'd look at bringing an extra backrow and forget about both of Beirne and Kleyn. Can call up Dillane if need be.

Mustn’t have been doing it for joe in training. Case of brining ruddock instead of the Munster two?

As your entitled to do. And others will too I'm sure.

I was frustrated with the last 30 minutes, but was reasonably happy before that. So that means I'm 62.5% pleased and 37.5% displeased.

And means I'm 1,250% more pleased than I was with last week's performance.

Really can't understand how he didn't even get a chance, given how poor the other two have gone. He was in good form this season too. Real head scratcher.

Dillane, if there was any justice

I’d say Dillane can count himself unlucky to get cut but things must not have been going well in training/camp for him.

Thought Carty was alright, can’t say he was motm though but it could have been so different if he started last week.

Kilcoyne looked good today while James Ryan is consistently good.

Because we were 19 points up against 14 men, not hard like.

I see the knees are jerking already. This was a much improved performance over last week. We were defensively solid for the first 50 minutes and although a few scores were a bit lucky, we still did well to take them. James Ryan and Dave Kilcoyne put in monster shifts in the first half and Jack Carty was very solid in the first 40 too.

We were playing a second string wales who only woke up after 50 mins

I liked the brief bits of 9-10-12 interplay we saw from the Connacht guys. They're obviously very comfortable playing with each other. The plays didn't always come off as it's a step up in intensity at test level and defences are tighter.

Still encouraging to see us try those things with second choice partnerships. For Ireland it used to be that once you went past your obvious first choices, any other combo played like they'd only met each other in the jacks before the game.

We were playing a second string Wales side with our own second string side. We were away to the 6 Nations Grand Slam Champions and won. The performance may not have been great, but it was what was needed after last week. We showed a lot of organisation in defence and the set piece was mostly solid. That's much better than last week.

Ireland definitley need someone to start standing out in that backrow....really worrying , id be tempted to throw some young lads into the mix , england looked mad brining curry in so young, but Penny has that kind of talent aswell

    Centres: Addison, Ringrose, Aki, Henshaw.

Back five: Kearney, Earls, Stockdale, Conway and Larmour.

From having great depth in the backrow a couple of years back we now look very light with SOB and Leavy off the scene.

Beirne and POM were very quiet. I thought Addison was poor enough - kicked poorly and turned over the ball. I do think Beirne should still be taken. On harder faster ground he will be better whereas POM's lack of pace could be shown up. A fine line for Beirne though, he hasn't put his hand up.

Carty for me has moved up to no. 2 outhalf. The variety in his game is superb and he is much better at controlling the game than Carberry. His dink kicks over the gain line are a real asset as they make the defense think twice about rushing up, something Sexton doesn't do enough of.

Marmion was very solid too and notably much faster than Murray at getting the ball away from the ruck.

Bundee was solid but his passing lets him down. He seems to have shed a stone or so so that camp must have been intense.
Farrell was quiet and his injury record will leave him struggling.

Conway was again superb. I would have him at fb. He held the ball brilliantly before laying off to Stockdale for the try and looked threatening any time he got on the ball.

Kilcoyne did very well. Porter put his hand up too. He was outstanding as a LH with the u20s.

I presume Joe will put out a full strength side next week. Hopefully we get no injuries.

Your assessment of the England performance amounted -1,187.5% below this performance. Ok...I think i would go along with that.
But that means we are still 1,187.6% away from a positive scoring matrix.
I’d say that’s a fair reflection of how far off Ireland are from their 2018 performances.
This matrix leaves 1,287.5% room for improvement. About Fair!

I’d give anything for this ireland team to be able to wake up in the second half and cause chaos like Wales did. We had no response to that.

We should have a plan to come out and score big early. But enough fitness to go rampage at the end.

We don’t have that right now.
We couldn’t even keep hold of them

Beirne can't catch a break, doubly dissapointed

Triply. I included him three times;)

Should have added Kilcoyne to the players who will be happy group.

We were playing really well up to 50,Wales had a bit more sting to their attack and then subs came on, and they asserted dominance. Still, we saw the game out and positives to be taken from that game.

Actually I was basing it on being 5% happy with Twickenham. If I was 10% happy with today I would have been 100% more happy than last week, 15% would have been an increment of 200% etc.

So by my scoring, last week was 57.5% worse than today.

Punchline being the curve is going the right direction, with the ceiling nowhere in sight.
Ideal scenario to be in on the 31st of August in a world Cup year! :)

There’s Bob Hope and no hope of that happening.

Why do people refuse to get it into their heads that players who are abroad will not be getting called up?

If you call up someone playing abroad, then it opens the floodgates for others to leave the provinces for more money.

As huge a fan of Donnacha Ryan that I am, if he came into the squad he wouldn't make one blind bit of an improvement. Henderson and Ryan are both better than him.
