A shame Villa gifted them the goals. Suppose it's better to get a day like that out of the way early.

United vs Chelsea looks interesting tomorrow. Hoping United can build on last season and give them a game. Will be tough though.

Good day for Ireland's Megan Connolly. She got a goal and assist as Brighton beat Birmingham 2-0.

Man United came from behind to get a draw against Chelsea.

Highlights at 10:30pm tonight on BBC 1.

Edit: Just seen that Megan Connolly goal on the highlights. Some effort.

Nice to see another Irish international join Brighton. They face a tough test against Man City on Sunday.

The Premier League, FA and EFL today jointly published the following open letter to football supporters.
The Premier League, EFL, The FA, Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship want to assure all fans that together we are fully committed to your safe return to football grounds as soon as possible.

The health of the nation remains our overriding priority, and for many months we have been working with experts to make our grounds as safe as, if not safer than, any other public activity currently allowed. And we are consulting with the Football Supporters’ Association to keep supporters updated every step of the way.

We know attendance at matches can play a positive role in people’s lives during these challenging times. And the past few months have shown how clubs can still feel the support of their fans. Even when you have been unable to get together, you and your clubs have found ways to make a difference in your communities, with clubs delivering food parcels, taking part in phone calls and online conversations with fans, the elderly and vulnerable and moving services and programmes online to make a difference in unprecedented and challenging circumstances.

But we all know football is not the same without fans. Every player and manager is missing the direct connection with you and the impact that you have on our games.

With the EFL, Premier League, Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship already staging 11 successful test events recently, we have demonstrated that we can deliver matches safely. The sooner we can return, the sooner we can reunite communities and support local jobs, livelihoods, regional businesses and also the national economy.

We will continue to urge government to allow us to return fans safely to stadiums. It is positive progress that major arts and music venues have been told they can run socially-distanced events indoors. And now football should be allowed to do the same - in highly regulated and stewarded outdoor environments.

Additionally, representatives from football are active members of the government's Sports Technology and Innovation Group, as well as being involved with its ‘Moonshot’ mass-testing project to open up the economy. And in light of the postponement of test events we will intensify our efforts to pioneer new approaches - working with epidemiologists, scientists and medical experts in areas such as public health, clinical processes and occupational hygiene. This will make sure stadiums are COVID-safe by considering best practice screening and hygiene methods to ensure that fans and the general public will be safe and drive the government's sporting plans to move faster.

Stadium environments can be modified and carefully managed. Measures could include screening spectators before they enter the ground, installing temperature checks, requiring masks to be worn, one-way systems and providing a code of conduct for all those attending on a matchday. This will all be bolstered by deep-cleaning practices to help further reduce the risk of virus transmission.

Clubs want to be pro-active on this matter and willing to consider measures both in the stadium and on the approach that will allay any concerns as to fans’ safety. From a travel perspective, clubs will work closely with experts and local authorities to model solutions relevant for each stadium to ease pressure on public transport, while extra parking facilities could be available so a greater proportion of you can travel by private car or bicycle.

We are determined to identify a path forward with government. We need clarity for our clubs and for you as supporters as to what the roadmap for change in this area looks like. We all know why caution is needed, and we ask government for consistency in their policy so sport is treated as fairly as other activities currently allowed to welcome spectators.

So, we will continue to urge the relevant authorities to let us, together, use innovative ways to bring fans safely back into football grounds, starting with a return of the test event programme. If we do so, then the benefits will be felt not just by fans but throughout society and the economy.

Richard Masters, Premier League chief executive

    David Baldwin, EFL chief executive

    Mark Bullingham, FA chief executive

Kelly Simmons, FA director of women's professional game

Nice free-kick goal by Ireland captain Katie McCabe in the North London derby.

    https://twitter.com/BarclaysFAWSL/status/1317822882525839360

She nearly scored another one shortly afterwards but the keeper saved well.

Ireland's Rianna Jarrett got the winning goal for Brighton today as they won 1-0 at West Ham.

    https://twitter.com/BarclaysFAWSL/status/1327974858089590784

Big game of the weekend just started now as Arsenal host Chelsea. Katie McCabe starting for Arsenal. Man United still top of the table after a nice draw versus Man City yesterday having been 2-0 down. Casey Stoney doing a great job at United.

Full-time: Arsenal and Chelsea draw 1-1. Probably a fair result, although Chelsea nearly won it at the end with Sam Kerr's lob going narrowly wide. Result keeps United on top, with Chelsea 3 points behind and with a game in hand.

Huge game next week, top of the table United v Chelsea who are currently thumping Reading, Kirby has four goals and is flying considering how little football she's played in the last few months.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,106 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Chelsea women top of the league. 2 - 1 win over United leapfrogs them into top spot. Cracking United goal, but Chelsea deserved winners (just) imo. Beth England incredibly unlucky not to start games but embarrassment of riches up front at the moment for Chelsea. She'd get into every other team in the league.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

That's a massive win for Chelsea. It will be hard to stop them now. City or Arsenal are the only ones I'd say have a chance of taking points and United can't afford any slip-ups either. Stoney has done an excellent job no matter what. I just hope she can get a top 3 spot at least.

Caught up with the weekend highlights. This was some free-kick by Steph Houghton.

    https://twitter.com/BarclaysFAWSL/status/1353366095210573824

Pleased to see Rianna Jarrett get on the scoresheet, albeit a consolation.

Solid win for United to go back on top but I suspect Chelsea will deal with Villa comfortably enough.

Chelsea won again, 32 unbeaten in the league overtaking Man City to set the new record. Top of the league, increased their goal difference, game in hand and Fran Kirby had a nice rest.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Shock results today with Man United losing 2-0 at home to Reading, and Chelsea losing their long unbeaten run to Brighton. Man City are the big winners and have closed the gap with a good 2-1 win at Arsenal.

Very good day for the Ireland women as Grace Moloney made several good saves for Reading, while Megan Connolly got the winner and an assist for Brighton.

BBC 2 have the highlights from 11:30pm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I caught the Chelsea/Arsenal game earlier which Chelsea won 3-0. It was level at half-time and Arsenal probably edged it at that point, but Chelsea too good in the second half. That should be Arsenal out of the title picture now.

The Manchester derby will be a big game on Friday, assuming the weather doesn't scupper it. It's probably must-win for both if they want to have a chance of winning the league. Looking at the remaining fixtures, I can't see Chelsea dropping too many points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,106 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Good win for City in the derby, wouldn't write them off for the title. Think it's between them and Chelsea now, who are still strong favourites but haven't looked as stellar in recent weeks and City are on a good run. Read they have a few injuries though which might be an issue.

Hopefully Chelsea can finish top though, after a completed season this time.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I caught the derby and was hoping United could nick it, but City unfortunately are still a level above. The injury to Galton was another blow. Lovely goal by Caroline Weir...

    https://twitter.com/BarclaysFAWSL/status/1360517065396879361

I agree with Tom that it's likely a fight now between City and Chelsea for the title.

Just hope United can hold out for the final CL spot. It would be a real shame after the season they've had if they start to run out of steam. I expect Arsenal will finish the season strongly. The Arsenal/United game next month will be important.

Katie McCabe with a great goal for Arsenal. She got an assist as well. They've been comfortable winners at Villa, winning 4-0.

    https://twitter.com/BarclaysFAWSL/status/1366050052540493834

Man City eased to a 4-0 win at Birmingham. Ruesha Littlejohn was in midfield for the home side. I'd say that was a tough game for her.

Ireland keeper Grace Moloney getting a lot of praise from her manager for her performance in Reading's 0-0 draw with Tottenham.

Important 2-0 win for Arsenal tonight over United. There were chances for United but they were wasteful. Lauren James' miss particularly bad. Puts Arsenal 3 points off United for the final Champions League spot, with a game in hand as well.

Ireland's Katie McCabe moved up to 10 assists with this corner, going level with City's Chloe Kelly:

    https://twitter.com/miedemastuff/status/1373028153917009920

Thought she played well. Her deliveries were dangerous.

Goal for Ireland captain Katie McCabe in the North London derby. She also got her 11th assist of the season too. Playing great atm.

Man United won their first ever fixture at Old Trafford. The pass through to Press for her goal was excellent.

Also, Miedema just scoring absolute worldies for Arsenal on the regular like it's nothing.

Chelsea into the Champions League final after beating Bayern. They'll play Barca on May 16th.

Incredible ending to the game. Both sides could have won it in the final stages.

Chelsea playing their game in hand against spurs now. If Chelsea win they go I will to the final day 2 points above City. The current goal difference is 1 goal in Chelsea's favour.
Regardless of the score in this game we're still on for a very interesting final day of games!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Saw the first half and if it wasn't for Spurs keeper Becky Spencer, Chelsea would have ran away with it. They don't look like they're going to slip and didn't in the end against Spurs, but interestingly, they'll be up against Ireland keeper Grace Moloney when they play Reading, and she was able to keep City quiet up until the 87th minute a few months back.

Another thing to look out for at the weekend is whether Ireland captain Katie McCabe can break the assists record. Beth Mead holds it for 12 assists in 18/19. McCabe is on 11 going into the game with Villa, who are fighting to stay up. I'd love to see her at least equal it as she's had a terrific season. I was pleased to see her sign a new contract a few days ago. Chloe Kelly is also on 11 assists but she suffered a bad ACL injury, so she won't be doing it. Fran Kirby could manage it as she's on 10 assists, and was rested today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,106 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Chelsea women cruising to the title. Reading actually the better team this second half but Chelsea still scored on break to lead three nil.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Watching Arsenal vs Villa and it's goalless with 15 minutes to go. Bristol City going down unless they beat Brighton (losing 2-1 atm) and Arsenal win.

Birmingham losing to Spurs now, but Bristol still need to win to survive.

Brighton winning 3-1 now so Bristol are goners.

It ends 0-0 between Arsenal and Villa. Was hoping to see McCabe break the assists record, but credit to Villa they were stubborn and defended well.

Chelsea finish 5 nil. Berger wins golden gloves, Kerr wins golden boot. Chelsea win the league.

Looking forward to seeing what the team of the year is. This would be mine:

    GK: Berger (Chelsea)
    RB: Bronze (Man City)
    CB: Williamson (Arsenal)
    CB: Eriksson (Chelsea)
    LB: McCabe (Arsenal)
    CM: Mewis (Man City)
    AMR: Kelly (Man City)
    AM: Kirby (Chelsea)
    AML: Hemp (Man City)
    ST: Kerr (Chelsea)
    ST: Miedema (Arsenal)

    Manager: Emma Hayes

Player of the Year: Fran Kirby

Forty four pounds for a season ticket to see Chelsea Women next season, or a fiver for kids. So cheap for an okay standard of football, usually plenty of goals and friendlier atmosphere to bring kids.

Good few games on terrestrial telly this weekend. The season opener of Man United vs Reading will be on Sky Showcase, the replacement channel of Sky One. Might see Ireland keeper Grace Moloney starting in this one. 7:45pm kick-off.

Everton vs Man City is on BBC One at 1:30pm on Saturday. The other Ireland keeper Courtney Brosnan joined Everton this summer but it remains to be seen whether she'll start or not.

Arsenal vs Chelsea is the big weekend game on Sunday and Sky Showcase are showing that too. Kick-off is 12:30pm. Should see Ireland captain Katie McCabe play. It could prove one of the biggest games of the season seeing as Chelsea and Man City only lost one WSL game last campaign.

Watching Man United and Reading at the moment, quality isn't bad at all to be honest. Moloney got away with one there, United probably should be in front

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Good finish by Hanson to give United the lead. Agree about Moloney. Fortunate not to be punished for coming out like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Lovely strike by Batlle to make it 2-0 United. I think Reading can feel hard done by though as it looked like Chaplen's strike earlier was over the line. Unfortunately, no goalline technology in the WSL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Enjoying this Arsenal/Chelsea game. Arsenal leading 3-2 with 25 minutes to go. Chelsea only lost the one game last season, as did City, so this could be a significant blow for Chelsea if they lose it. They look the more threatening side now though.

Full-time and Arsenal see it out. Hopefully a sign that Arsenal can push Chelsea and City this season.

Caught the highlights show. Shocked that City lost at home to Spurs, although the Spurs winner ought to have been ruled out for handball. Truly the best advert for VAR is watching football without it. Surprising that City and Chelsea have both picked up losses after only 2 rounds of games considering they both lost only once in the whole of last season.

I noticed the new Arsenal coach Eidevall is playing Katie McCabe at LW rather than LB, as she plays for Ireland. She's got 2 assists in 2 games already. Hope she can bring that form into the qualifier with Georgia on Friday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

What a fantastic win for Arsenal, beating City 5-0. Record loss for City in the WSL. Arsenal looking a genuine title contender this season. Ireland captain Katie McCabe got the third goal:

United hammered 6-1 at home by Chelsea earlier in the day. So frustrating seeing Casey Stoney doing punditry when she had done great work with United last season. Feels like they're going backwards now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Wow Katie McCabe just scored a cracking lob of the keeper just now against Villa on BBC Two. She only came on for the last 15 minutes as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Had a look at Arsenal's visit to Barcelona in the Women's Champions League game tonight and it was scary how dominant Barca were. They ran out 4-1 winners but it could have been a bigger margin as Zinsberger saved a pen in the last minute. I wouldn't bet against them retaining the trophy on this evidence as they made the current WSL leaders look like a second division side.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

This derby between United and Man City on BBC 1 has been great fun. 2-2 currently with just under 10 minutes to go. City had a player sent off but are trying for a winner.

Full-time and it ends a draw. City's losing run comes to an end but a point doesn't help them a great deal.

Good day for the Irish women. Another great goal by Katie McCabe as leaders Arsenal won 3-0:

McCabe also got an assist. Louise Quinn grabbed an equaliser for Birmingham away to West Ham:

Marie Hourihan was in goal for Birmingham. Sounds from the reports that she played well. Grace Moloney kept a clean sheet for Reading against Villa as they won 3-0.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Had a look at Arsenal's Champions League game with Hoffenheim tonight which they won 4-0. Another strong performance from Katie McCabe who was involved in the 2nd goal, had an assist for the 4th, and also cleared off the line. She's one of this country's top sportswomen. If RTE do a Sports Personality of the Year show I hope she gets some acknowledgement for her great year. (Harrington will win the award of course, and rightly so).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Arsenal fortunate to get a point against United. Toone missed a sitter to make it 2-0 and Katie McCabe got a second yellow. She now misses the crucial top two clash with Chelsea next Friday.

Chelsea with a tricky match against Man City tomorrow. Win that, and Arsenal likely have to beat them Friday to have a realistic chance of the title. Can't see Arsenal doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,954 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

United really left that behind them. Saying that, Arsenal had a couple of chances of their own, namely smashing the cross bar and Erps making a great save.

Great to see Dianne Caldwell playing for United.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Grace Moloney with a penalty save as Reading beat Everton 2-1.

Louise Quinn got on the scoresheet for Birmingham but they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Leicester having played most of the game with 10. I wanted Birmingham to stay up with their Irish contingent but sadly they look goners now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

0-0 in the top two clash between Chelsea and Arsenal. It means Arsenal stay top by 2 points but Chelsea have a game in hand. Arsenal were better than I expected but pretty lucky not to concede a pen for Williamson's handball near the end.

Tough to see Chelsea slipping up now. Final game of the season against United maybe the trickiest.

Looking forward to the final day of the season tomorrow. Chelsea lead Arsenal by a point in the title race but it looks like Chelsea have the tougher fixture. They're hosting Man United who need a win to keep their alive CL hopes. Arsenal meanwhile away at mid-table West Ham. All games kicking off at noon. Sky Showcase airing the Chelsea game, while BBC Two have the Arsenal game.

I'd like Arsenal to do it for Katie McCabe's sake but I don't see Chelsea slipping up. Despite a few shaky moments the last few weeks, Chelsea tend to get the job done in the end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Could be a hugely dramatic end to the season. Chelsea 2-1 down to United at half-time, while Arsenal goalless at West Ham. As it stands, Arsenal will leapfrog Chelsea and win the title on goal difference.

Still fancy Chelsea to do it, but they're going to have to do it the hard way. Then again, Arsenal still need to do the business in their game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

2-2. Teams back level within seconds after a great volley from Kerr. Perfect start to the half for Chelsea who are back on top as it stands.

3-2. Chelsea lead for the first time thanks to Reiten. Looking like Chelsea have one hand on the trophy now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,954 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

The volley was very good. But how come Earps pulled out of the save? I didn't think it was going that fast
