Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Inspired by what the Brits do better than the Paddies thread, thought it would be nice to share our deadliness.

What things do you know about Ireland and Irish people that few people know or realise?

We’re usually associated with drink and ‘craic’ but many people don’t know an Irish person invented the homing missile and designed the White House.
Also not many people know that the original Santa Claus, St Nick, is buried in Thomastown in Kilkenny

So what seldom known stuff do you know?

Even though you’re correct, not everyone agrees. There’s a naval city in Spain, Cartagena, which has a monument to mark the world’s First submarine. They don’t credit the Irish creator though.

    We need to invade Spain

Irish people make very good project managers as can be seen by how many of us are around the world working as project managers and indeed much loftier roles.

Why you may say, I believe its' due to our classless society, usually and Irish person can talk to a janitor and a CEO in the same tone and manner and be respected for it.

Brits are a real mixed bag in this regard and anyone who has worked abroad will know what I mean by this.

Funnily enough, there was a documentary on the BBC World Service radio at 4am this morning about the invention of the submarine.

The Brits being the Brits hated giving credit to anything from Ireland and mentioned Holland several times through gritted teeth. Apparently he was a Fenian and he designed it to attack the Royal Navy ships. They then bought up the plans and modified them.

Holland was not impressed with the changes that went on to the blueprint for the WWI subs. But by WWII they had reverted back to the shape Holland had originally designed.

In fact they said in the programme that his design was way head of its time.

And the following programme was about Eamonn Coughlan being the first person over 40 to break the 4 minute mile. I don't sleep much.

I think it is a bit of stretch to call them good friends. they supposedly did meet once once at a function but that is about it.

Spelt sudocrem... Is it because it's supposed to be pronounced with an 'ai' accent instead of the 'ea'?

I didn't know Santa was a Kilkenny man. I certainly did know that the man who designed the White House was a Kilkenny man too.

As ironically enough did the children of the last Tsar, as their tutor/governess was also from Ireland. Though this was later "corrected" by another English tutor after said governess had left their service. The daughters of the Tsar corresponded with her until their deaths during the revolution.

Several schools, streets and a train station in Mexico are named after Batallon de San Patricio (St Patricks Battalion), a group of 200 Irish soldiers that fought with the Mexican army against the Americans during the Mexican-American war in 1847.

They are commemorated in Mexico on September 12th, the day most were executed by the Americans after their defeat.

Bernardo O'Higgins is a name well known in South America for independence movements in Chile and to a lesser extent in Peru.

His name is all over Chile and Chile also has a fairly successful football club named after him called O'Higgins FC that play in in the top division over there.

    *His father was Irish*
