Whenever I think of The Blues Brothers, I think of this song.

That and the scene with the nun and the ruler :D

Can't find a clip of the Wild Bunch (looks like more of Texas to me / you have no eyes!) But just play it back in your mind theatre...

4th Place – Marvin Gaye - I Heard it Through the Grapevine

Molly: I’m so familiar with this song and I do like it. Listening to it again for this allowed me to pick up on stuff you never notice on a casual listen though. The strings are really fantastic and add so much to the track. I heard this song on facebook recently without the backing track and Gaye’s voice is just stunning.

ALC: Classic. Love the song, but like a lot of the others, something I already know well isn’t gonna top the list. If I’d never heard it before it would be the top scoring song, easily.

    Molly: 11/14

You did not. It was our mystery entrant.

You have the honour of being my second walrus so I'm afraid the search continues.

Bedraggled fugitive Banjo : "I didn't nominate Ed Sheeran!"
Marshall Molly : "ah don't kyare!"

6th Place – Scott Joplin – The Entertainer

Molly: This was one of my leaving cert music pieces so I know it well. I enjoy the bounciness of it. It was always fun to play. Excellent choice.
ALC: The entertainer is a great piece of music, but I know it and I’m going to give higher votes to pieces I hadn’t heard before.

I dont get this, yiz placed 'sheet music' above the cackle sisters.

The entertainer sheet music was composed in 1902 but just playing sheet music on a pianola and recording it, most likely in 2019, scoring higher than an act form 1938 in a pre 1950's category seems unfair.

And we slide into the top 3 with:
3rd Place – Caro Emerald - That Man

Molly: Friends of ours love this band called Steam Powered Giraffe that do covers of popular songs in a ragtime/jazzy/steampunk style. I hate them with a passion. This song reminds me of them but surprisingly I don’t hate this. It’s kinda swingy like the Benny Goodman song in the first category and it’s making me tap my feet to it. AGAIN WITH THE SPOKEN PART THOUGH!

ALC: DIPDAP PAU. Wouldn’t listen to it on a loop, but a fun dancing song

    ahem............no.

5th Place – Astrud Gilberto, Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz - The Girl from Ipanema

Molly: Nice smooth song. It’s very easy listening though. Nothing really grabbing me about it. Which may be the point.

ALC: I only knew the Frank Sinatra version of this, and really enjoyed this version. Laid back, summery tune.

    2nd Place – Kendal Carson-I Like Trucks

Molly: I’ve never heard of this person before and wouldn’t be a huge fan of country music generally (Garth Brooks is my exception to that rule). I can imagine this song doing well in my hometown. Much like wagonwheel does. I like the sing along ability of it though. I was singing out ‘I LIKE TRUCKS’ by the end.

ALC: I definitely liked this one. You can’t go too far wrong with a catchy sing-along song.

1st Place – Ludovico Einaudi - Nuvole Bianche

Molly: I LOVE Einaudi. I love this track. This is my chill out music. Often threatened to try learn this on the piano but I’m currently too lazy. This could’ve been a submission for the put you to sleep round and I probably would’ve scored it just as high.

ALC: Aaaaagh I’m torn on this. I’m not big into classical music, but Einaudi is class. I know this really well from all the times I’ve heard it on the classical station we leave on for our cat during the day while we’re at work #goodCatOwners #whyDoesn’tMyCatLikeMe #****Up. I’ve put it as high as I can while still below music I like/that’s new to me

Just quickly catching up on the reveal now, was flying home from holidays. As a massive Talking Heads fan I can confirm that the version that was originally posted is one of the earlier demo or live versions, it's not a version that would be heard very often. There are actually quite a few versions of the song, including one with a cello. My personal favourite version is the one from Stop Making Sense with just David Byrne, an acoustic guitar and a boombox.

Category 3: Songs to go to sleep to

Another great list of songs for this category with a very surprising top 3. Lots of controversy in this category between the mods but there were a few songs we were in perfect agreement on and most songs we were close to agreement. Unfortunately one of the ones we both agreed 100% on is the last place song. So without further ado, in last place:

14th Place – One Dove - Transient Truth

Molly: Bit trippy, doesn’t really do anything for me. It really lost me in the first minute with that whiney repeating alarm. Don’t like the digeridoo thing in the middle of the song and it just goes nowhere.

ALC: Relaxing enough in its own way I suppose. Not for me though.

13th Place – Neil Young - The Ways of Love

Molly: Well of course I know Neil Young. He sang, em, that song. Sweet Caroline. Right? This song just did nothing for me. Meh.

ALC: I want to like Neil Young. I like Bob Dylan, so it’s not like I can’t get behind boring folky Americans from the 60s.But he generally does nothin for me, and this is the same. I technically know that his stuff is good, it just doesn’t click with me.

Surely the less a song does for you the easier it is to fall asleep to so the more points you should give it?

(Cards on the table, I don't fall asleep to music except for one band I was saving for the last category, so my choice is a song I keep sleeping through, and is basically cheating.)

Joint 11th Place – Nick Drake - River Man

Molly: I know OF Nick Drake, just never listened to any of his stuff. And after this? I dunno, maybe. The song is very peaceful and windy. I’m not sure I like his voice but I can’t put my finger on why.

ALC: This was ok. I can definitely see why people would like it. It’s not really for me though.

Joint 11th Place – Way out west - Tuesday Maybe

Molly: This is an odd mix. Kinda electronic, kinda pan pipey, kinda trippy, weird vocals. Not for me unfortunately. Sounds like it should be the theme tune for a channel 4 documentary on the effects of ecstasy.

ALC: It’s hard to rate this, because a) it would work to fall asleep to, if I played it quite low, but b) I find it kinda dull and repetitive. So, mid-table for me.

Love that Nick Drake song it reminds so much of Roy Harper's Twelve Hours of Sunset (there's another song to fall asleep to, in a good way)

    :(

I deliberately picked a mellow one for the category. He's not boring. I like this one because it has a gentle Balero-esque melody to it. Sad you didn't like it more.

10th Place – Crash Test Dummies - Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm

Molly: My problem with this song is that I couldn’t actually fall asleep to it cos I’m too busy listening to the stories. Other than that it is a great song.

ALC: Woo nostalgia! Brings me back to VH1 playing best of the 90s. I like it, but I don’t think I’d go to sleep with it.

    9th Place – Diego Mitre - Ryujin's Lullaby

Molly: Well jesus it’s even called a lullaby. What more can you ask for? Does exactly what it says on the tin. Creepy music box keyboard and Japanese influenced strings aside it’s an ok piece. Verging towards ‘hold’ music for me though which knocks it down for me.

ALC: Nice tune. Thought it was from a video game at first. Might listen to some more of Diego Mitre’s stuff

That's pretty but the music box tinkles might drive me mad. It reminds me though I wonder did anyone choose Tubular Bells they're really good tinkles. I can think of loads more songs for this category than I did when I was putting the list together - It's a great category Molly & ALC.

Molly: Another band I’ve never heard of. I liked this. Reminded me of someone but I can’t think who. I think I’d have a look at them.

ALC: I could definitely sleep to this, but I forgot the song the second it stopped playing. I still think it’s a decent choice for the category.
