Yeah, wasn't this written on a few scraps of A4 paper according to reports?

'Non Papers' if I understood it correctly...can't be shared with 27 EU members!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,622 ✭✭✭✭Water John

It's one of the non papers submitted to the EU negotiating team. Seems it's quite detailed so, the UK may think this could have legs. That may tell us a lot about the UK.

Dundalk, Newry and Derry would all form part of Bizonia:

As Tommy Gorman said on RTE News, accepting this would be the political death warrant of any Irish government.

If it looks like, sounds like, and walks like a border - its a border

Its an obvious non starter, and they have to know that. what possible benefit is there in announcing this?

If its part of a ploy to get the election so be it, but if they actually think this solves anything????

There is a Scottish one call pieandbovril. Is a football forum but the politics section is pretty funny and has a few threads devoted to Brexit. The politics forum on betfair has an amazing amount of anti irish bile. Must not be moderated at all given the xenophobic utterings. Definitely one to avoid

Funny given Betfair is an Irish company these days...

They know it wont resolve anything as all they want is a no deal brexit.

This so call proposition is just a token gesture from the UK Government and they know full well it will be shut down from the start but they can now go back to the some of the gullible voters saying "we told you had a deal but the EU wouldnt budge"

very early days but a BBC journo saying their won't be a no confidence vote this week and the blame been laid on the door of SNP.

I suspect that's the Lib Dems doing some propaganda.

Would be very silly not to have a vote this week with the tories in Manchester.

You need to make Johnson ask for the extension or break the law not doing it. Make him look bad, they can call a VONC before the 31st October and install the GNU and request a extension yourself once it has become clear Johnson had no intention of abiding by the law. The objective is to make Johnson look as bad as they can before the inevitable election. By giving him a no-confidence vote now will give him some leverage still.

I thought one of the reasons we need to avoid a border is that it would become a target for terrorists? Surely just moving a few km's doesn't negate this concern at all. These are not serious proposals and it is no wonder they wanted it kept quiet, because it is as close to a non-starter as you can get. The EU will look at it, shake their heads and reject it.

If Ireland doesn't want to impose an unwanted border on Ireland... Repeat that ad nauseum...

Then when you get bored, repeat: "British Border in Ireland" ad infinitum..and then hopefully Brexit is over then.

These new border check proposals are unacceptable, in breach of the GFA and almost certainly will incite dissident violence.

Whoever came up with these proposals clearly had a few pints on them.

    It's ridiculous.

Let's stick Creggan in a weird unstable null zone.

It's not like it's an estate known for dissident republicanism. What could possibly go wrong?

This is not a serious proposition. It’s designed to be rejected, so that they can pretend it’s all the mean EU27 not being reasonable.

It will be rejected because it deserves to be rejected because it’s unworkable nonsense.

I think Stormzy summed up the feelings of the British public towards the political situation in his song Vossi Bop:

'F*ck the government and f*ck Boris.'

What customs officers would want to take a job in these centers?

Customs officers are customs officers, not police or army. Be surprised if there were any north or south willing to take the risk.

Without a doubt. Once the bill passed that he had to go and try and get something it was obvious it would be done in bad faith. Appalling behaviour.

The EU would be wise to call their bluff. I think this is the endgane for the Brexiteers in the Tory party. Either they succeed in getting a no deal or they're gone. The ring leader has reached his peak and the EU just need to wait it out and have will have an adult to deal with soon enough.

You could pay me €1m to be a customs officer st the border in Newry and I would decline, as would every person who values their personal safety. They are a walking target for dissidents.

There is only one solution to the border situation, and that's reunification. But since that isn't on the cards ATM, there is simply no viable solution.

This from June last year shows what a 10 mile one on the UK side looks like. It includes ALL of Derry city and most of Arlene's constituency

    On the Irish side ?
Ballyshannon is less than 5Km from the border so County Donegal would be cut off. Inishowen would also be cut off.

Letterkenny and Donegal town would be in in the buffer as would Dundalk and Cavan town. 10 miles would take most of Counties Leitrim and Monaghan too.

It's lunacy. And then there's the recent Kevin Lunney thing too as if anyone needed a reminder of what could happen.

FT saying the UK will know by the end of the week whether the EU wishes to engage with their idea.

In other words all talks could (and probably will) be halted by the weekend.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,745 ✭✭✭Enzokk

The more this idea sinks in the more unworkable it becomes. Is this really the best they can do? Look at this map and spot the problem,

If this is the only proposal that the UK can come up with then they may as well call it a day.

The population around which the border lies generally don't like the border.

I'm telling you, customs posts = hard border = The Troubles 2.0.
