North Macedonia and Albania set to get green light for accession talks - though given both are far poorer than even Romania was in 2007, eventual entry is probably a decade away:

    Brace yourselves.

I'd bet on Cummings unleashing the tory media attack dogs on the Irish position in the coming days - i'd say Varadkar is going to be getting some special treatment.

Someone was saying yesterday they expect Johnson & Cummings and their media pals to go for the 'Ireland and the EU are evil' angle for the next few weeks, with their eyes firmly on a GE.

I think Simon Bryne is just saying what Stephen Pound warned about. If you want customs checkpoints, get someone else to protect them becuase our guys didn't sign up for that.

Are there not other organisations that could protect the checkpoints? If not the British army, then what about some sort of security force created for the very purpose? Maybe those Northern Irish lads who evicted that man in Roscommon last year are looking for work.

What is even more ironic is that the vast majority of English MPs and people would happily give NI away. NI is being used for Tory party political reasons, nothing more. In this instance, they insert a DUP veto to ensure that the EU will reject Johnson's proposals. The DUP is ideologically wedded to Britain. That's a one-way street.

To be fair, it's not just NI. The workings of Holyrood hardly come to national attention either outside of when Independence is in the news.

True, they're only talking to each other and nobody else on the planet is listening to them (they're even aware of this).

It's clear also that the DUP would probably be happy enough if Stormont, in its current setup, never sat again. And they'd squarely blame Sinn Fein for that.

A no-deal Brexit would be the gift that keeps on giving for the DUP. It's really no wonder they'd opt for it. Hard border in Ireland? Fantastic. Not having to even pretend to cooperate with Sinn Fein ever again? Brilliant. Polarising the communities? Oh, somebody pinch me.

The DUP has always been the Hardest most extreme of the Unionist Parties in NI - (lets ignore Jim Allister's TUV for now) - and as has been pointed out they were against the GFA

What is really necessary, and has been reported is that there could be a swing against them in a GE - which is why there needs to be one now more than ever

    https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/newton-emerson-uup-has-one-chance-to-make-a-difference-1.4037766

The UUP, PUP and Alliance need to launch a concerted effort to DE-THROWN the DUP by highlighting the facts
    • DUP's use of POC is like a hand grenade, and its use can be clearly described as being along the lines of - 'Sinn Fein Want 'this - {INSERT ISSUE OR BILL}' and they have a Majority of MLA's.. Block it.. why? Cause we can, and cause the Sinners want this'
    • The DUP will always do what ever they can to avoid anything that brings Ireland and NI closer together
    • Power Sharing Assembly wont function properly with the DUP representing the largest Unionist block in Stormont
    • The DUP are only too willing to put their single priority (the precious union) on front of every other consideration that exists including possible benefits of the back stop - and the real benefit of remaining in the EU - If they ever WANT TO REMAIN, you can bet your life it will be because we have left

There will definitely be a GE very soon, unless Johnson or his government are somehow removed from office.

Some seem to believe that Johnson will comply with the Benn act under duress and request an extension, but that HMG will have secretly arranged for an EU member state to block the extension with veto and 'free' the UK.

That sounds like a conspiracy theory but I (sometimes) hope a country does show the courage to veto it if there is extension request. Or counter-intuitively, make the extension 5-10 years (or nothing), set up so it is bye bye immediately if the UK starts acting the maggot and attempting to destroy the EU from within.

It's pointless as the UKs' politics (the whole lot of it, the swivel-eyed Tory loons, Chairman Corbyn and his comrades, all the "remainers" who suddenly appreciate the EU so much they wave little flags after not piping up during 3 decades of UK tabloid bile and lies) seems incapable of resolving this now.
I don't think there will be improvement/clarity in the forseeable future election or not.

Absolutely crass and disgusting : the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification of Germany after nearly 50 years was nothing remotely like Brexit

YouGov poll shows the majority of Brits admit they don't understand the border issue:

Puts all the nonsense about the backstop and sea borders into perspective.

I'd say half the ones who know "A fair amount" know **** all about it. They might have ideas about it but not actually know any facts.

He can't really believe that surely? Because there's no way he's trying to persuade his audience. Unless he's completely deluded. Never struck me as delusional. Perhaps the Columbian marching powder has taken its toll.

So 62% of Brits are honest about what they know about the border.

I don't even believe the "a fair amount" cohort if I'm honest

I'd put money on many of them being in the deluded spoofer category... I.e. Gary down the pub who knows everything about everything

Unusual for Enda to make any comments since his retirement, but it reiterates that Leo is merely continuing his policies:

Miriam O Callaghan on Prime team is seriously questioning why the Irish Government wont compromise?

    WTF???

Patrick O Donoghue very weak on prime time at the moment. Miriam trying her best for the unionist position for some reason.

Yeah, just watching that. Quite bizarre. Satisfying the DUP is not the same as satisfying the people of NI, not even the unionist of NI.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,626 ✭✭✭✭Water John

Yes she did. She comes across as shrill. The EU have offered special status for NI, they then at the UK's request extended that to the whole of the UK. That's their compromise, in light of the UK's three red lines.
Lady Hermon may have only one vote compared to ten DUP, as Miriam pointed out, but she represents a lot more people in NI than the whole of the DUP.

On the Gove thing, he claims he was misheard, but that doesn't explain the heckles though. I imagine someone must have a recording of the contentious part of the speech.

Quite unimpressed with Prime Time Tonight - very poor journalism

O Callaghan questioning as to why ireland wont accept the BoJo NON-Deal was not rhetorical - that may as well have been an Express or a Toriograph Journalist interrogating someone

They seem more concerned with the weather tonight-

Question Time on the Beeb later - that will be interesting as they tend to have a good panel
