Issues with Virgin broadband setup - any advice?

    Hi,
I've had the 360mb Virgin product for the past few years, using the standard router etc provided by Virgin.
The hub itself is situated downstairs in the living room and everything (wired or wireless) works fine on that floor.
However, there are plenty of deadspots on the first-floor, despite it being a standard-sized 3-bed house. There are points where the wifi *may* work fine but the connection is certainly not reliable.
I've got powerline adaptors running from the hub to the first floor also, with ethernet cables running into the back of an xbox console and a smart tv. The powerline connection works fine 90% of the time but I still see frequent disconnects on the xbox in particular, as any drop more than a couple of seconds long leads to me getting kicked off the service.

Is there anything I can do to optimise this setup? Given the price we're paying for the top of the line product, I don't expect to have such an unstable service.
Is there another router we should be using instead of the standard Virgin one or is that even an option?
Is there an issue once the number of connected devices goes over a certain limit? There's certainly occasions when there could be >10 devices on the wifi.

    Thanks.
