Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Recommend a small car €5-6k

    Howdy folks,

My girlfriend is in the market for a small car to get to and from work. She has a budget of €5-6k and is looking at 2010 or newer. It's her first car so cost of insurance is a key consideration. The budget does not include insurance.

    Any suggestions?

Is there a mileage figure she should be looking to stay under?

    Thanks in advance!

Nobody will know your girlfriends insurance quotes so can't help there.

If I was going small car I'd be looking at polo or fiesta all day long. See what the websites throw up there and if anything jumps out at her.

Shameless plug, but the ford fiesta I'm selling is an excellent first car. A low 1.2L engine will get the cheapest insurance possible. Has very low mileage too.

Ford Fiesta, Renault Clio, VW Polo added to the list. What about Yaris or Honda Jazz?

She had her eyes on a Mini or Fiat 500 - but I've heard bad things about those cars. Would I be right?

Looks ideal but out of her budget, unless you're willing to drop price to 6k!

Yeah but some cars are cheaper to insure though, right?

Wouldn’t bother with the Polo. Most will be the chocolate 1.2 engine.
Same with the Ibiza and Fabia.

Fiesta is the best car in that class given the budget.
Jazz is very good too but they’re ugly.

I'd be going for either a Fiesta or the 131 model Clio if the budget could stretch a bit more

Re Fiat 500 loved mine but the constant issues broke my heart. Absolutely lovely to drive for someone inexperienced like me.

You could probably get a fresh enough Renault megane for that budget?

Corsas have soft engines. I'b be looking at a Fiesta in that price range.

    Insurers hate them. Even today.

    What about a Yaris?

Surely a Honda Jazz of all things is cheaper to insure??

zoning in on a 08 fiesta for 2900 or an ibiza for 1900.
is the fiesta worth the extra grand? not much difference in insurance for her

2900 is expensive for a nearly 12 year old Fiesta.

i agree but the old 1.2 petrols seem to be holding value for some reason

My sister has a 2008 Fiesta, if someone offered her 2900 for it she'd bite their hand off.

Polo. I've had multiple Volkswagens down through the years and not one of them gave trouble ever.

    What about a Nissan Micra?.Excellent car,reliable 1l,or i.2l engine.Plenty of safety features.

Prioritise low mileage over age....and don't buy anything that doesn't have a full (preferably main dealer) service history.

You'd pick up a low mileage toyota aygo or similar in the UK for around £4k....probably cost a grand in vrt and a couple of hundred to bring back over..

There ya go. haggle and save yourself the cost of the ferry back..
