That’s a worse result for Scotland than Ireland. We’re pretty much guaranteed to qualify now.

Easy to believe, Ireland have been **** for the last 12 months.

Can we have an automatic reminder that we have beaten New Zealand in the last 12 months

What’s annoying about today is now we have to pick a strong team against Samoa and could end up with more injuries due to how we and they play.

That was a totally different Japanese team to the one that played Russia

Not a great performance by the ref. Offside is something in fairy tales and the high tackle seems to be a movable feast.

Good job Joe is leaving after the world Cup

There’s no coach in the world that can get this country to not bottle a Rugby World Cup, we are serial bottlers.

We didn’t score for 60 minutes, that’s 60 minutes against Japan and tbf we didn’t come close. Tactics second half where a complete failure we just kicked the ball away with no compete.

Gardner is a shocking ref, after all the criticism last week you’d hope the eye on would improve, instead he was allowed ref today to a shocking standard

If Best had retired last November, he would have gone out on top with everyone remembering him for the brilliant player and leader he was.

As it is, this poor end to his International career will leave a sour taste.

It's a massive difference in defence when the ref allows you to illegally slow down the play and line up offside at the breakdown. That gives a huge advantage to a defending team

    Ireland weren't even no.1 :pac:
    ...they were....

    Entirely undeserved but they were.

D'aaw our traditional world cup meltdown, I'm sucker for traditions me.

If a book is ever written about Ireland's exploits at the RWC it should simply be titled 'Calamity'.

****ing pathetic and embarrassing. If this was the Irish soccer team they'd be getting dogs abuse. But suddenly Japan are world beaters now.....

Yeah, I heard so many people on this thread saying Japan was going to go on and win the tournament now.

What an embarrassing sporting day for this nation.

The hype was vile after beating the Scots last week. The ego in this country and in that rugby squad is disgusting to see.

Outfought, outgunned and out muscled by ****ing Japan

quite strange as i've been switching between channels...no one has mentioned the ref at all...

Japan battered us - that is it..only for missed kicks they would have been way ahead..

This is the sort of arrogance that results in a loss like this. A bit of respect for oppositions would go a long way. It's hardly surprising to see the continuous underachievement in the WC.

Definitely. Russia put 10points on them, we only scored two more.

Refereeing was shambolic but ultimately its Ireland's shortcomings that cost us the game and the last 10 or 15 minutes were chaotic with at least four players playing out of position. Japan deserved the win and despite the sickening disappointment, I'm happy for them, they were electric.

Fair play to Japan, we’ll deserved. Leitch changed the game when he came on. Gave them a huge lift and was everywhere.

Keep what you have, a bonus losing point. No way they had the energy to get up the other end and get a converted try.

Just goes to show, take no team and I mean NO TEAM, as a granted walkover. Japan were the better disciplined, better adapted, better planned, just the better team.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 27,325 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

    Fair play Japan.

Our breakdown work was poor and we could have done with some chips over the top. Their defence was right in our face. Japan are some team to watch.

Typlical Ireland. Always someone else to blame. Just not as good as the hype and bluster suggests.

    That's it in a nutshell.

Presumably we can expect Joe Schmuck to whinge about Angus's reffing; not today, but when he briefs the embedded Irish rugby journo-fans in private over the next couple of days. Not that they - or the one-eyed part-time rugby fans - will need much of an incentive to blame anyone except the sterile coaching staff or over-coached players.

I'm sure they would those 2 friendly victories for a successful world cup.

People will be falling over themselves to say how competitive those matches are but these are the competitive matches and Ireland fail every time.

There is a clearly a massive difference between glorified friendlies and even Six Nations rugby vs World Cup rugby, which Ireland fans either can't or won't see and admit.

That Earls tackle at the end could be absolutelymassive. Who knows what way this group is gonna go.

Soon as I seen the team Joe put out, it was evident he held Japan in high esteem.

They turned us over after getting gifted by the ref.
Not the end of the world and it is Japan's day.

No-one said (except a few here :) ) that it was going to be so easy, we could afford to drop the guard.

We were poor but the moment Gardner stood there and looked at their 7 being offside, told him as much and didn't award an advantage you knew he was reffing the teams differently. That would've set it up a penalty and Ireland to get possession back.

Instead they got 2 penalties when Gardner was nowhere near the play, no warnings just penalties.

It was a garbage performance. They got away with a clear red last week and then there was no citing, and now that display.

Maybe they're not aware of it, but they're being reffed differently and being held to a lesser standard

That is probably the best example of it from the game. Throughout though he was much quicker to penalise us, giving warnings and blowing up straight away after.

Japan's tempo killed us in that game and they deserved the win but saying Gardner's performance had nothing to do with it is wrong.

Important thing is to react to this, beat Russia and Samoa well but still recognise that a higher standard is needed against better teams.

Your nuts if you think a 10 could win that, game lost in the forwards

Yes, but you also need a calm head at 10 when things aren't going well. Carty and Carbery both panicked. Not t saying Sexton is immune to feeling pressure, but I do think he would have performed better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,293 ✭✭✭All_in_Flynn

First and foremost, fair play to Japan. They were incredible.

Ireland played into their hands and I thought the ref let them away with murder. They were clearing out from the side constantly. They were constantly lying on wrong side of the ruck slowing us down.

Even saying that though, Japan deserved their victory.

What does that mean for the group now. If we win both our next matches with bonus points are we still automatically through?
