Can anyone help me get precious photos back?

Hi, I have recently been bereaved and im desperate for help in accessing some photos. I'm not at all technical and I don't know what's happened. I have a Nexus 7 that I haven't used in a long time. When I opened it to look at the photos, I could see the photos but cudnt open them as it said I needed to update to view photos. I clicked "update" but now the photos have disappeared. I can't open the photos app as it says " unfortunately photos have stopped" can anybody please help me find these most precious photos? Thank you for reading.

Not sure if you ever used the app on the phone but hopefully it helps, but maybe check on Google photos - www.photos.google.com and see if they show up ?

Have you tried connecting your nexus to your computer and viewing the files on it using a file explorer. Perhaps the photos are still on the device and can be copied directly onto your pc. Maybe an android expert on here can verify if this a good approach to take.

Novice actions could be destructive, get assistance from a friend or acquaintance that knows what they're doing. Hopefully its just the viewer app thats dead.
