Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

FTTH last 10M is Cat6

    So When building the house I put 2 cat6 cables to the external box of the house,
    There is approx a 10m run to my data cabinet.

    I'm getting FTTH soon and they are to connect it to the cat6 outside.

    What is a realistic expectation drop in speeds for the last 10m?

    Eg if they are promising me 300mbs speed, Whats min I should accept?

    From the ONT to your router over CAT6 at a 10mtr run, any significant vdrop would be due to either poor cables or a provider issue.

    Cables are gigamedia cat 6. Decent quality ones.
    The FTTH isint installed yet, but I'm foreseeing them blaming any drop in the cat6 is all, and want to know would they be right

    Cat6 is capable of 10Gbs up to 55m iirc. Just try and ensure its not ran parallel to power cables for any great length. ONT is demarcation but you can always verify speeds with a laptop and patch cable at external box if required so it's a non issues in reality.

    Have you power in the external box (the ETU I assume)? The ONT that converts the optical signal to Ethernet requires power.

    Are the ONTs even rated for outdoor use? Even an ETU is presumably more damp than inside.

    Agreed, if they're playing by their own rules you will not be permitted to do this. Gotta drill the wall.

    The ONT used by the 2 companies deploying FTTH in Ireland are not rated for outdoor use. They are used in parts of the world but rare enough - too many headaches with power, access and cost.

    What's useful in your scenario is a (capped/sealed) duct route from the ETU into a position within the house ideally beside a power point and (if you have it) a data cable point linking to either a patch panel or a direct link to wherever you want to install your CPE (wireless router etc.)

    So.... no is the short answer.

    KPN lads wouldnt put the ONT in ETU, even if there was power there.

    They drilled. Ahh a 6mm hole isint the end of the world and we sealed it.

    But such a waste of time bringing the two cat6 cables there in 1st place.
