Wisdom Tooth removal - worth getting 2nd opinion

    All,

Just wondering if it is just me being overly worried or can a dentist remove a wisdom tooth as normal with a 20 minute appointment.

Have a toothache and went to a well known chain. The dentist took an x-ray and advised that wisdom tooth decaying and needs removal and the tooth causing the problem is beside that one and can be saved with a filling.

When booking appointment with reception the dentist said she just needed a 20min slot to remove the tooth.

I am aware when friends had wisdom tooth removed that they had a consultation with specialist such as an oral hygienist to look at nerves etc.

Is this normal for a wisdom tooth to be removed without examining other factors such as nerves or would I be better finding another dentist and having a specialist remove it if needs be.

    Thanks,
    Karen

Get a second opinion if you can afford it. A couple of years back, I was told I needed two wisdom teeth out. I was broke so I didn’t get them out at the time.

Went to a dentist my family recommended a month ago to get a check-up and he said my wisdom teeth are decayed and likely could have still been saved with filings a year ago but removal is best now. Also said the extraction shouldn’t be as complicated as the first dentist made out.

The first dentist was definitely a bit of a scammer. They always had a sign on the window about 10% student discount (only reason I could afford the €100 filling). Came out and they said the filling was actually more expensive than expected at €150 and they don’t do student discount anymore, they just can’t get the student discount sticker off the window. Actually had to call my grandparents to drop money down to me at the dentist as I hadn’t enough!

Depends on the skill of the dentist really and the difficulty of the extraction.
I extract non-impacted wisdom teeth but don’t do surgical ones. If it’s a simple forceps extraction then 20 minutes is probably enough time.
I take an OPG first for wisdom teeth and would consider it good practice..

is it an upper or a lower wisdom tooth?

Thank you all for your replies.

It is an upper wisdom tooth.

So it wouldn’t be unusual for a dentist to perform an extraction on a wisdom tooth. An OGP was done and the dentist was willing to perform the extraction there and then, but I was taken aback and made an appointment for the following week.

    Thanks,
    Karen

Upper wisdom teeth can be very easy to remove, its impacted teeth that are difficult to remove.

Hi Karen, I agree with fitz, I’ve had both
My uppers removed easy, providing they are not impacted or twisted roots, I had that on a lower and it was a mare

I had all my wisdom teeth out as routine extractions. I think it was about €80 each.

As a child I had back teeth pulled. The first took over an hour. The last three were under general anesthetic.

I suppose if they have an X-ray and are only assigning a 20 minute slot they must look straight forward.
