Self employed: Step by step process

Hi, How do I set myself up to be self employed? Do I need to register company name or can I go ahead and start selling my product without registering name? A lot of ‘smaller’ companies I’ve seen don’t have their business name registered on CRO. Why is this and is that legal ? And advice welcome.

How do you know they’re not registered? They maybe registered under trading as aliases so you wouldn’t know.
