I thought either version would work? Won't the X version unlock the XSX version like the PS5? If not then the boxes need a change of green or something big.

Yes the XSX version will unlock the Series X Version but if you buy the other X Box One Version then it won't.

Activision are being unscrupulous about this and are hoping that people will double dip on it. Bit like what Rockstar do with GTA. I wonder will they expect people to pay again for a GTA V X/S version.

I would like to Microsoft push game companies into supporting Smart Delivery and not allow this to happen.

Was in the middle of a game of siege on my series x and it just randomly powered off.. Controller stayed connected power just went on the xbox... My nightmare with this series x continues

I've had that a couple of times. Once in Yakuza and once when watching Twitch. Very buggy console so far but hopefully it's just software issues that will be ironed out.

Yeah I don't know what's going on one time I tried to even shut down my console and it booted a game instead

Go onto Microsoft rewards again and said I should of go point for my x and s purchase, they apologized said a problem with system automatically applying the points but in the end hardly worth it as I only get 1 point per €1

Slight lack of games tbh, I am yet to even play mine due to how little games there are, I expected more games to at least have enhanced versions, give me a reason to play it, but nope

Anyone know the first few good games that will be released for it? Not just Xbox One games that make their way over

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,443 ✭✭✭recyclops

think the first one will be the medium and that was due for release on Dec 10th but due to cyberpunk they pushed it back to Jan

Seems a bit delusional in that Blu-ray sales will pick up.
Hasn't he heard of netflix, disney + or prime. Why on earth would people bother with blu-ray when they can simply stream the same quality.
Sure the shows are later in the year but most people will be clueless about it really.

Streamed services are a good bit short of the quality you get from a 4k Blu-ray

    oh yeah I understand that.
But you think the average xbox person is going to know that? Maybe in the states where they take their TV rooms seriously but over here in europe sure its grand quality :)
if anyone was interested already in AV they'd have a dedicated blu-ray box and have their collection already.
Anyone getting an xbox is definitely not thinking of blu-ray and more interested in the next gen games. If there was any increase it would likely be single digits.

If the xbox one S or one X didn't start loads of people buying 4k blu rays I'm not sure why they would think the Series X would.

Yeah its more the quality of picture etc I find interesting in the review. Also someone was giving out about the ps5 not having dolby vision playback for 4k blu ray but it seems the x is the same.

I used to be a disk advocate but with disney plus and a fair bit of content on netflix and prime in 4k I buy very few any more. Stuff like the christopher nolan collection, harry potter and I might get the lord of the rings for Xmas.. I have a stack of disney blu ray that I'd say look as good if not better on disney plus..

one thing I've definitely noticed since getting my projector is 4k on its own isn't that big of a leap from full hd on anything around 55 inches.. hdr yes makes a difference but the resolution doesn't..

Yeah fair enough, I wouldn't argue with that. It was probably more of a feature with the previous generation as 4k players were a good chunk more expensive back then (and streaming was less prevalent) so it's addition was a big bonus. It's definitely a "nice to have" as opposed to a key factor in the purchase.

I would have said yes in general but they are close enough that it makes it a hard choice... You can get 3 years if disney plus for the price of the star wars 4k physical disc collection... Plus no storage issues..don't get me wrong... In a lot of cases if not all the physical disc will be best but most people don't perceive the difference

The cost of physical media is outrageous and not just when compared to cost of a subscription.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭theteal

Just on a somewhat linked aside, I see some of these new expensive soundbars (and also LG TVs) are ditching support for DTS:X which up to now has been the main disk based object audio format. They seem to be going Atmos only in line with what the streamers support (although compressed iirc). This will be another knock to physical disks.

Is anyone having issues with screenshotting/capture on the Series X?

This has driven me crazy since noticing it but 90% of the time when I hit the share button mid game it will be followed by a second or two of audio stutter and usually a freeze/stutter visually. It then saves the screenshot/capture and returns to normal.

Mostly playing forza horizon 4 and not much else but it does seem to be across the board issue. I'd be forever grateful if someone playing forza could try hitting the share button and let me know if they are faced with the same problem?

I cant find this mentioned on google as a problem...

I checked out of the physical media game a long time ago so the increased move towards digital suits me just fine.

Games are now patched so much and so often that a collection of current gen discs would have zero sentimental value for me. If the game you love isn't what's on the disc then what's the point?

Then there's the number of digital only releases I own. The long-term survival of my collection is already contingent on these services, and/or my storage, surviving well into the future. It was no great leap throwing all of my eggs in one basket.

Of course there's the price issue. Discs are cheaper, especially when you're on the look out for an old game. One of the last discs I bought was XCOM 2 for €5 in CeX while it was still €59.99 on the PS Store. So that's a very real issue.

However the games that I buy are typically from studios that I want to support. I want them to continue making games so I give them my money. And if I'm showing my support at full price and on Day 1 then there's only usually €10 or €15 in the difference.

I'm old enough to remember the bad old days when an 8 hour single player game cost £50 or £60. Older people than me will have paid even more than that for their formative gaming experiences.

The amount of top quality entertainment you can now get for €70 is truly remarkable. And that's only in the AAA space. Indies are often outrageously underpriced for what they offer. To think that Hades, one of the games of the year that's already soaked up 100+ of my hours, cost me just €25!

I should counter my own line of argument by pointing out that Demon's Souls is currently listed for €84.99 in Argos and that really did raise an eyebrow.

I guess everyone has their own arbitrary point at which cost and value become dissonant.

I've played the original on PS3 so I know what value that game offers on a per hour basis (which, admittedly, is an awful way of assessing a game) but just shy of €90 for a remake (even a stunning remake) is an ominous portent.

    I'm the same.

4k Blu Ray is a complete irrelevance for me.

I would have been delighted if MS had followed Sony and released an X without Disc Drive for €399.

My entire library is Digital. I get loads of stuff on Game Pass and Gold and other games I either get on sales (which happene regularly) or I just buy them.

I find the need to buy full priced games gets less each year. Cyberpunk will probably be my next one.

As for DVD player yes I'm sure for snobby video and audiophiles that the quality is superior but when I look at films on Netflix/Prime in 4k I don't see anything wrong with the quality at all.

It's just so nice to have a digital library at your fingertps rather than piles of discs everywhere.

same for books lol...used to have so many and now I have them all on my phone.
Now if I was filthy rich one of my dreams was always one of those library rooms stacked to the floor with books and one of those big ass american desks they had in Dallas and all those older shows etc. Then obviously the fireplace with the 2 leather armchairs and the brandy decanter on the table between them.
Not forgetting the cigars too :D and an adjoining TV room then for entertainment.

I had the Star Trek collection and the Matrix collection on blu-ray and I just threw them all into the bin last week as they're only cluttering the place up.

just got a text reminder. is being held in ilac centre till 6.30pm this evening.

please do post if you are unable to collect

Got it fine on Friday, just had to wait until work was over. Laughing about it on the way in with my wife:

Her: "You did well to buy the Xbox, I heard they were sold out."
Me: "Oh I didn't buy it, I got it from someone on Boards.ie"
Her: "They bought you an Xbox???"
Me: "No no, they gave me their reservation number." :D
Her: "So we're driving half-way across town because you got a number from a stranger on the internet?" :pac:
    Me: "Yes."
Her: "And you really believe there'll be a console waiting for you in the store? Hahahaha!"

But yes there was indeed a console and our faith in Boards.ie was well placed :D

I still buy Blu-rays but they're all from Masters of Cinema, Arrow, Criterion etc. There will always be a niche market for specialist movies. But even Criterion have their own streaming service now. It's USA only but nothing a bit of jiggery pokey can't sort out.

The very idea of buying or renting a mainstream film on Blu-ray is baffling. Surely the bottom has fallen out of what little market was there.

I would say that price and customer protection is one of the main reasons why there hasn't been a shift to digital completely. I feel we will see it in the next generation of consoles but right now we are in between that and they are easing the consumers into it. Just look at what happened when gamestop became the major show in town how they inflated their prices.

Adding on to that is the fact that ownership is a big deal and any of the games you purchase through PSN or xbox live you dont own and have no way of getting to that media if they remove it and you havent got it saved.

I hope you will agree that on one level you are speaking from a privileged position and not all can just follow studios, price is a factor and second hand games even with 10-15 off is still appealing to allot of folk.

Its a romanticized idea that we have it so lucky and that in the past you couldnt get a decent game that lasted longer than 8 hours and you get such a bang for your buck now. From the 80's on we saw RPG's being made which would have had allot of hours into them but the major change and difference is the gaming market itself. It used to be more niche which meant that prices were allot higher or the market would have collapsed on itself.

Now you pay 70 euro and you might get a full game but you also might get a live service or some mechanism to claw back money from you at some point. The gaming market place is becoming increasingly anti-consumer so i can understand why people will keep away from digital if they can avoid it.

Interesting, do you happen to remember which outlet the review was from? Wouldn't mind seeing if its the same issue as my own

Spent 35mins with microsoft support this morning, 25mins of that was me being on hold before they cut the call off :pac:

    I'll try a reset tonight
