As others have pointed out there, people will find a way around the swear filter if they really want to but the swear filter itself hasn't been removed.

Would it be possible to add the term “retard” to the filter?

    thanks Niamh

is there an official position on moderating this?

some pretty aggressive posts recently using this workaround.

if it's not a problem, then ..... do we need a filter?

I agree that it's not a very nice thing to call anyone and posts using such terms should be reported. Using derogatory terms against other users is not allowed as listed in the site Terms of Use.
    5. We expect you to act responsibly in posting Material on Boards.ie. You agree, through use of this service, NOT to use boards.ie to:
    [...]
post any abusive, harmful, vulgar, obscene, sexually explicit, indecent, profane, inappropriate, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable Material, except where the content is appropriate to the content of the forum and you have been granted specific permission to do so and subject to our guidelines on said content

Outright banning or filtering specific words that some people take offence to is not a road we want to go down though. There was a similar discussion last year in Feedback here which you might find useful.
    thanks Niamh

Not really an official position, no. As far as I know no one has ever been actioned for circumventing the swear filter but they may have been actioned for the content (message/tone) in the post containing it.

The filter is for minimising swear words on the site. We don't want the site littered with fcuk, shít and whatever else would become standard fare if we lifted it. In some cases a swear word might be acceptable in a ranty post for example and worth the little bit of extra effort to a user to get it posted but we're not giving a green light to go nuts on the swearing either. There is a difference I think in turning a blind eye to the occasional workaround for the swear filter and opening the floodgates to everything and anything.
