I'll try and run this off fairly quickly, entries are open for a week, you can nominate your top five sporting moments of all time (EDIT: By PM) and I'll run them off over the following week in a randomly randed fashion

Will it be one of these

Anyway get your PMs in, voting will be a day time event

    Ray Houghton in 88
    Ray Houghton in 94
    Packie's save and O'Leary peno
    Maradona's Goal of the Century
    Any AI won by Cork
    Usain Bolt
Ireland v Wales 2009 to win GS
Stephen Roche in 1987 winning basically everything

Extra kudos if Jimmy Magee was commentating

Jimmy Magees commentary of John Treacy winning silver in 84 is the finest piece of sports broadcasting ever, if you haven't heard it you are missing out

1 They think it's all over, It is now 1966 WC

2 Dennis Taylor v Steve Davis 1985 Black Ball Final

3 Torville and Dean's perfect score at the 1984 Olympics

4 Penalty shootout against Romania in 1990 World Cup

5 Ireland beating England at Croke Park 2007

Has to be Alan Mcloughlin's goal in 1993 against the North. A partisan crowd singing for fenians to drown in their own blood hushed with a sheer goal of beauty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,454 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

I think you need to be in the moment for most event, you're not going to get the same buzz watching them now.

    An exception Istanbul.

I tried to give some slightly less obvious (though still fairly obvious) suggestions. I'll be gutted if some of my omissions aren't included by other people!

Yep, I tried to go for some more variety too, though there was one imo that should win I couldn't ignore.

Looking forward to this GnR, I sent ya on the videos too :P

Is that time I started a “the referee’s a w@nker” chant while playing in a match eligible? :pac:

How I didn’t get sent off in that game I’ll never know

Cannot believe that there isn't a single Munster moment on the list?

    The miracle match?
The 2006 final when the screen in the stadium showed Limerick streets?
ROG's drop goal after 40 odd phases of play with the clock in red to beat Northampton?
Paul Warwick beating Australia on his own with a virtuoso performance against his home nation in 2010.

So many more to choose from that aren't Munster too
The anthems at the England game in Croke park in 07!
Being the 1st team to beat England after they won the RWC...

The wee, baldy legend! Stringers 2006 try against Biarritz

Jaysus lads nominations are slow, at this rate it'll just be my five greatest Mayo matches

I'll be entering in the next day or two, so that'll be another five for you.

Will PM with a few but straightaway the leicester PL win in 2016 comes to mind.

Wouldn't be a massive soccer fan but their story just captured my attention like no other. I honestly don't think I'll ever see a sporting upset like it again in my lifetime, and it has to be the greatest upset ever seen to date. It was just a pure sporting fairytale

The context sometimes gets lost in the intervening years but it would be like the equivalent of Namibia winning the rugby world cup, Waterford winning a football All Ireland, Mayo a hurling one, an amateur winning a golfing major and so on. It just simply should not come close to happening

So I need another 10 to ensure no moment has a bye into the second round, so have it even if you've entered already
