Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Dennis Taylor, though it pains me to vote against Houghton tbh

USA 94 without a doubt. A massive upset, one moment of joy followed by about 80 minutes of nailbiting and probably one of the best Irish individual performances by Paul McGrath.

Easy win IMO and expect this selection to be in the latter stages.

EDIT: Or not, seeing how the voting is going.

It's no contest snooker v football. Football wins.

People were deluded in the 80s thinking snooker was great craic. Times have changed.

Comes down to this for me too tbh. Nothing unites this country like the national football team at a world cup.

    USA 94

    Dennis Taylor.
That was a global story (world championship final). The football was an Irish one. A fantastic one which created lifelong memories for everyone who was either there or can remember where they watched it or how they felt or who they were with....

I remember watching the snooker as well. My dad was big in to it (still is) and was getting more and more nervous and when Taylor won, I was delighted my auld fella was happy.

    Sticking with Taylor.

    4-3 to Taylor

    Taylor for me.
A world championship coming down to the final ball of the final frame, it's how we dream of sporting occassions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭jasonb

    Taylor for me too! :)

Taylor here, couldn't have been scripted better.

    Dennis Taylor.
That was a global story (world championship final).

A World Championship with participants from 6, all English speaking countries. Hardly a global story.

    Houghton for me.

If it was Italy 90 it'd be a harder choice. But as it's not it's an easy one and Taylor all the way. Exciting match - I'm just old enough to remember it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

So Taylor get home comfortably in the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

This could be a tough one

Bolt breaking the 200m world record at the 2009 world championships

    V

Jason McAteers goal and beating the dutch at Landsdown road

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

While the bolt on is undoubtedly a better sporting moment, I was in Slane watching the dutch match, unbelievable atmosphere and the place went wild when he score

    Edit: McAteer for me!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Bolt for me. Whilst the Irish game was a magical moment it doesn’t compare to the quality of Bolt performance IMO

That's really unclear as to which one you're voting for!

I'll go with Bolt on this though. McAteer was great but it was a qualifier. Usain Bolt was smashing his own world record at a finals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Has to be Bolt.

Unfortunately, there is a pattern here where very memorable Irish football achievements just weren't that big when compared to a global stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Has to be Bolt due to the significance

I'm finding myself voting against a lot of my favourite Irish sporting moments (was also in Slane that day) while trying to be objective

Word for word how I feel about it!

McAteer because I remember it so vividly.

Though wont be shocked if Bolt gets through tbh but he has another entry so don't feel too bad

Bolt, an astonishing performance that may take a generation or two to be beaten.

Don't like voting against McAteer but trying to be objective, it has to be Bolt

    6-3 to Bolt

I'm ignoring the monumental stupidity of selecting unimportant Irish "achievements" from the paddy squad as demonstrated in the thread. Here are the best sporting moments of all time:

Jesse Owens at the 1936 Olympics.

    Steve Redgrave - 2000

    Derek Redmond in 1992

    Rumble in the Jungle

Brooklyn Dodgers vs New York giants 1951

Brazil winning the 1970 World Cup

    The Shot - Michael Jordan

No idea what sport that is let alone who won or why it's important. Is it baseball? American football?
    The Shot - Michael Jordan

    Just looked it up. Meh.

Number One: Its a bit of craic, and an Irish website, so there will be Irish moments included

Number two: If you're going to go on about country specific achievements, why are you highlighting two sports that no one outside that specific country cares about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

phew just in time to downvote Bolt. McAteer and Ireland all the way. I'm a small minded Paddy who never warmed to Bolt's dubious charm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Barney92

I'll go with Bolt for this one. Loved McAteer's goal but was more impressed by Bolt.

In fairness, 'The Shot' as he refers to it, is a massive moment in a basketball fans list (mine included), you'd need to understand the significance. But this guy isn't a bball fan, he's a troll who's taken a list of moments from a website, of which he's never even seen or understands the significance of. The paddy reference speaks volumes.

    Two athletics next

Ronnie Delaney takes gold in Melbourne

    V

Roger Bannister breaks the four minute mile

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Bannister. Iconic, for the world not just for Ireland.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    I'm torn.

    Bannister with a heavy heart

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Voted for Bannister in the first round, but gonna stick my Irish hat on and go for Delaney here. It was a famous medal for us

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Delaney for me, one of the greatest Irish moments

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭jasonb

Bannister for me, much more of a historic event for the world. Only Ireland knows about Ronnie Delany’s medal really...

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Bannister, it's one of the great milestones in athletics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,401 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

    Another vote for Bannister here

That’s nowhere near Tigers best one

    Rugby for me

Agreed with this. I think I’ve pointed out in every post I’m not a rugby fan and then voted for rugby.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

    The drop goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    R O Gara.

Rugby is far more taxing than golf imo

Drop Goal by a country mile.

    Iconic moment

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Even though its a confusing choice in terms of Tigers achievements, I'd put it above the rugby as its a much bigger tournament and sport that he's playing
