Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    BODs hat-trick in Paris

Cameroon for me, made that world cup so much more special

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,401 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Cameroon - must have been everybody's second team at that World Cup.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Cameroon here though neither really deserve to go further tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Cameroon, first African team to get to the quarter finals, and absolutely lit up that World Cup

Football on the world stage dwarfs anything else.

    Milla and Cameroon to advance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    Likewise Cameroon, entertainment value alone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    Which they do 6-0

Next up two fairly niche entries

Japan beat South Africa at the 2015 WC

    V

Ireland's victory over England at the 2011 cricket WC

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Cricket for me but TBH two of the poorer choices in R2

We'll try and wrap up R2 this evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Japan vs SA. Especially considering how they went on to host the tournament directly after it. Was a great advert for their public.

Cricket over here is super niche and only ever will be.

Japan beating South Africa was just epic.

Minnows in a sport beating an all time great nation.

Then again the same could be said for the cricket tbh.

    Hmmmmm

    Japan for me, just.

More of a global thing than a test match tbh.

Cricket for me. It was great fun jumping on a very unexpected bandwagon for a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

I'm going to go with the Irish Cricket victory but really, neither was in the incredible category if you ask me.

That wasn't a test match, it was the cricket world cup.

A test match Necro??? It was in a one day game in a World Cup, with the 'minnows' beating the inventors. I will admit the Japanese victory was epic but I'm voting for Ireland against England. Largest chase in a World Cup and done after they were almost down and out.

It was pretty much inconsequential though, even in terms of that competition. Was a group match in a group with 7 teams. Ireland lost 4, England won 2 and progressed.
I say that having voted for it...

The cricket for me. Was a huge shock in the sport, not just a great win for Ireland

I actually lived in Bangalore at the time, there was an incredible atmosphere around that world cup where they are cricket mad. And a lot of the locals got behind Ireland

And as for a global sport, I'd guess that cricket has many more multiples watching it than rugby

    The cricket for me.

Ireland beating Pakistan was incredible too especially watching it with a few Pakistani lads lol. Great craic altogether.

Inconsequential in terms of the tournament perhaps but pretty massive in terms of the sport here. The same could be said for many famous Irish sporting team wins - Ireland against Italy in 94, Romania in 90 etc. They didn't mean anything for the tournament, at least in terms of who won it. England won 3 and drew 1 to qualify in that group by the way.

Anything with the headline England shock defeat by Ireland gets my vote

Ireland progressed as a consequence of those victories.

    Japan

Ireland progressed as a consequence of those victories.

I meant, ultimately in terms of the whole tournament they were pretty much as inconsequential as the cricket match. Ireland didn't win their next games so didn't get to the final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    Ireland go through

Katie for me, it was a big deal to have woman’s boxing at the olympics and she was instrumental. I was there for the fight against the English lady, some atmosphere

    Katie 100%

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Definitely Katie, she's been a great ambassador for both Ireland and womens boxing in general. this was a big achievement

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Katie.

Will be viewed as one of the trailblazers in womens boxing worldwide in years to come, if not already.

Delighted she got her medal as so many move out of amateur having lost their chance or had it robbed from them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,906 ✭✭✭Barney92

I'm also going to go for Katie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

    Katie

    Knockout blow from Katie

    Goran. Very memorable match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I loved Ivanisevic, brilliant wins at Wimbledon

But the Aguero moment is THE moment of the premiership era and it was sticking it to whiskey nose, gets my vote

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,401 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

    Aguero...again with just one O.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Vote for Agueeeeeeerrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo here.

As someone said in the last round probably one of the most iconic moments of the PL era

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

    Goran for me.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Aguero. Hard to get excited over tennis.

Goran, probably my favourite tennis moment of all time. He'd slogged for so many years and it looked like he'd never win a Wimbledon. To do it in such dramatic fashion was just incredible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    4-3 to Sergio

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Goran for me. After so many close losses he seemed too old to ever win Wimbledon but he did it in a fantastic final. Great sport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Aguero.

As someone else said, pinnacle moment in terms of drama of PL so far.

I thought he won it in 1994 but he lost the final
