Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Jesse Owens I refuse to let anti English Sentiment detract from a great athlete by allowing Argentina and Maradona through at his expense.

Its got nothing to do with anti-english sentiment. The Argentines love Maradona, he's like a God there, the world cup was the biggest thing to ever happen their country and this was instrumental

    4-2

    Jesse Owens

There's very few sporting moments from before I was born that I'd say resonated with me, this is very high on that list. Truly iconic

Maradona was one decent enough dribble, but it's really nothing that special, and one bad call by the ref.

Toughest choice yet. Both will be talked about for many many years to come. But I'll go for Maradona. absolutely iconic, particularly given the Falklands War was still at the forefront of everyones minds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 242 ✭✭champchamp

    Maradona

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Yeah Jesse Owens for me. As I said in the first round match up this transcended sport for me. Wrote my LC history project on these Olympics. Maradona's solo goal was unreal but the HOG was pure cheating

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    6-4 Jesse Owens goes through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

This will show how colloquial we are!

Roger Bannister breaks the four minute mile

    V

ROG and co finally win a grand slam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Although I think I’ve voted against it In the previous rounds it’s Bannister for me

Has to be Banister for me to, now if it had been Ireland's first GS in 1948 would have been a more difficult choice

Roger Bannister. Teams can potentially win grand slams any time. There's only one "first person to break the four minute mile".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,478 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    Grand Slam

It's etched in my brain, it was us finally taking a step up

The four minute mile would have been broken a month later if Bannister hadn't done it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Bannister, simply more significant in the grand scheme of things

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Grand Slam that's an iconic moment right there and anytime rugby is even mentioned I instantly think of that specific drop goal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Bannister.

    First of his kind.

Bannister - everyone knows it and the fact it’s even made the list almost 70 years on says a lot. I just don’t think winning a few games in a row in an annual competition has the same significance.

    Roger Bannister for the history.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭duffman13

Bannister for me, ROG was one of those I'll never forget but it's kinda niche in comparison to the 4 minute mile

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    Bannister through

    Leicester winning the premier league

    Leicester for me. More iconic

Things like the Perfect 10 are subjective. It's opinion. Could've been a different score on a different day. Leicester winning a full campaign is just unreal. You can have a cup run that is 6 or 7 games and that's headline grabbing. Winning a league in that fashion is just another class. You can't take the foot off.

    Leicester.

I watched that video after voting against it the other day, it's unreal stuff! Amazing achievement but yeah I'd agree with you, the underdog story and the lack of expectation around that team was amazing.

    Leicester aswell but only just

Tough one, but Leicester. For King Richard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Comaneci for me. 43 years since she got the perfect 10 and it's still remembered, i don't think as many people will be remembering Leicester in 2059

I actually agree with this, Comaneci for me too

    4-2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

Vote for Comaneci scored the first 10.0 in the 1976 Olympics but like with Bannister's 4 minute mile, no one remembers the second to do the feat which was ironicly in the same Olympics by Nellie Vladimirovna Kim.

I'm going to go with Leicester here.
Really enjoyed their attitude and style that season.

    5-3 to Leicester

Comaneci for me. It was literal perfection

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

Leicester. Comaneci's achievement was a huge thing, but she was already one of the best in the world when she did it, whereas nobody gave Leicester even the remotest chance of finishing in a Champion's League spot, never mind actually winning the league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    And thats Leicester through

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Katie Taylor wins her gold at London 2012

    V

    Robbie Keane's goal V Germany

    Katie for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Katie once again.

Top of the world, genuinely versus equalising goal in a group game of a tournament.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Katie fo sho.

    Loved that Keane goal though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭hots

    Taylor for sure

Katie well on her way at 4-0

Jesse Owens. Just resonates more with me despite me not being alive for either :pac:

    Oh wow, a toughie! Owens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,286 ✭✭✭OAOB

Two sporting events of huge significance but i'll go with Owens as it had athletic and social importance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

Jessie, aside from the sporting achievement he also really annoyed Hitler

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    4-1.
