Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yay, we'll call it a night there, 13 left for tomorrow and hopefully put a good hole in R2

Definitely Robbie. I was there when it happened. I swear he looked directly at me in the crowd!!

Another two massive Irish moments here

Padraig Harrington lifts the first of his three majors at the Open in 2007. Lands in the water twice on the 17th and looks to have blown it but monsters the playoff against Sergio

    V

Our only track gold medal at the Olympics, Ronnie Delaney in Melbourne 1956

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,422 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Not really a fan of either sports but I would go with the Olympics, just seems more special winning gold at the Olympics than a golf major thats played 4 times a year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,026 ✭✭✭duffman13

I think a lot of people underestimate Harringtons achievement. At the time, it had been a very long gap to the last Irish major winner, probably due to the fact we've had Harrington, McIlroy and Lowry pick a few more it's diluted it a bit.

That said, Delaney, gold at the Olympics on the track gets my vote. Huge achievement

I don't really want to vote against Padraig so despite the Olympic gold I'm not going to.

    Harrington for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Delaney for me, 1500m is one of the most competitive events, amazing achievement

Delaney. An Irish person winning something like that so long ago and so far away is almost the stiff of myth.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

I’d go for Delaney myself. The fact that it’s our only track Gold is good enough for me is this one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,401 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Tough one. I watched Harrington on TV and Delaney’s gold was long before I was born but sole Irish track gold gets my vote - Delaney - wasn’t always a dirty word in Irish sport :)

Harrington did all he could to blow it, but he dug in for an incredible win, so he gets my vote.

    6-2 to Delaney

Hard to vote for things I didn't see but Olympic gold has to beat most things. As much as I loved Harrington's win I vote Delaney

Ronnie runs into R2 at last

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Be interesting to see how this one goes

    Robbie Brady's goal v Italy

    V

Jesse Owens four goal medals and two fingers in Berlin 1936

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

I know the Jesse Owens one is much more significant but Bradys goal was f**king brilliant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,478 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

As fun as Brady's goal was it has to be Jesse Owens, 80 years later and it still resonates

It's been twisted since to be this big counter argument to Hitler, which it was, but the sad truth is how the US treated him.

Jesse Owens is one of those moments that transcended sport and has gone down in history but as the GAA say "Nothing beats being there". I was about four rows back behind that goal still cursing Hoolahan for his miss about a minute beforehand when he floated that beauty of a ball in. Mayhem in the stands, had a 5am bus to Brussels Airport booked to get back to Dublin - think we got back to the hotel about 6am. Stayed in France and went down to Lyon for the France game in second round.

One of my top memories supporting Ireland.

    TLDR: Brady v Italy

    Nice!

Time and money meant I could only make one game in France. I picked Belgium

I watched the clip didn't see two fingers but I'll vote Jesse anyway

Jesse Owens by a gazillion lightyears.

    Jesse Owens, far too important

Jesse Owens- it's a piece of world History.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,428 ✭✭✭MrKingsley

Yeah Jesse Owens for me. Regardless of the political aspect. How he dominated over numerous disciplines is insane.

Brady’s was great. Was in France for the Euros but In reality we beat a second string Italian team that just meant we were the 16th best team out of 24

    Jesse Owens.

No competition because of what Hitler was up to at the time.

Sorry for the delay, Jesse makes it through

I don't know a lot about the first one here

French Open 2000 Gustavo Kuerten v Magnus Norman

    V

Brian O'Driscoll announcing himself on the world stage with his hat-trick in Paris

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

    O'Driscoll, no contest

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭jasonb

Don't think either are massive sporting moments, but have to go with O'Driscoll.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,401 ✭✭✭✭Collie D

Certainly no rugby fan but I think I've voted for it every time it's come and will do so again...O'Driscoll

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,424 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

    BoD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Brian O Driscoll.

The other one might not even make the knock out stages of 'Best Tennis Moments'. Not sure what it is doing here.

I googled that tennis match and not much is coming up. Whats the significance of it?

BoD it is I suppose, much as I think its completely irrelevant in the large scheme of things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,200 ✭✭✭hots

BoD but the weakest round so far I'd say

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Agreed but BOD moves on 7-0

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

O'Driscoll by default as I've never even heard of the two tennis lads

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Next up is a tough one

Roger Bannister breaks the four minute mile

    V

John Treacy takes silver in his first ever marathon at the '84 Olympics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,435 ✭✭✭✭Green&Red

Treacy for me, I just about remember it, amazing achievement and the commentary from Jimmy Magee is IMO the finest piece of commentary you will ever hear, gives me goosebumps.

I can only see the roger bannister option ?

    -edit-

    Nevermind..its there now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,972 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

    Has to be Bannister.

That was the benchmark for distance running, and still is to some degree.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,337 ✭✭✭jasonb

Heart says Treacy, head says Bannister, head wins!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,424 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Bannister for me. Breaking that milestone was massive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,497 ✭✭✭ArnoldJRimmer

Bannister, a huge achievement at the time
