Apparently slight Beatles connection too :D

From wiki: George Harrison was reportedly the inspiration for "The Rain Song" when he made a comment to Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, about the fact that the group never wrote any ballads.

Another good reason to hate George Harrison.

    Final 6

    Klapauzius
    Jurgen
    with 3 points for Meshuggah - I

    Notes;

heavy. Sweet intro. that kick drum. oooohhhhweeeee. headbanging instantly. is there a soft melody behid the heavy, or am i dreaming that? ok music is dying down. drums become more clear. where do we go. solo maybe? I'm anticipating. Well no. We get a sore throat. wow. why would anyone do this to their body. ok thank **** that is over. the actual vocals are grand. this reminds me a bit of jet pilot by SOAD. your man's throat must be in bits. he's actually damaging the **** out of himself there. Nah it's doing it for me. ok i like the music here nice. sweet bit of guitar. 18 more minutes. please throw in a bit of normal vocals? pls.... the music is very good. ok now we're into something different. almost sounds like a complete differnt song. music is great. Could listen to this music all day. I don't so much mind this screaming bit, but i can actually feel my vocal chords ripping listening to him and its hurting me hahaha. mad bastard. He's screaming, but he's screaming tonally which is grand. just wish he would do it in a bit more of a safe manor. oh wow. facemelter solo. wtf hahaha. that was not expected. and does not fit hahah. lads. jaysus. clearly good musicians. but by jaysus. 6 minutes in liking this vocal bit. vocal chords still shredding. power speed. would love to see a video of these lads playing. around the seven minute mark they do an extended set of one thing on guitar and drums. that's super impressive. blehahaha. the music just ends and then we've a super chill soft note guitar solo thingy haha. mad song. love the effect. this is like 12 songs rolled into one. i know it's gonna start heavy again and scare the **** out of me. oh there it is. ****. haha. like this beat and guitar. music is great in this song. can't help wanting some soft vocals in here to balance it out. Something SOAD a lot, which i love. Halfway through now, nice barrage of guitar and drums here. 12 minutes in now and i'm gettin fairly bored. There's not much differentiation throughout the song, it's mostly just barrage after barrage. which is grand, it just needs something to help with variety in there. otherwise it just feels like a long flat slog. ok we've a solo here, sounds ok, fits in somewhat with the song. nothing special though to be honest. oh wait this song is stil on ....14:40 we get some interesting guitar. expect an abrupt explosion here now........some bass...... something that sounds like a theramin in the bg haha. pretty bored now to be honest. only 4 minutes left. music is decent. just boring now after 17 minutes... it's over. thank jaysus.

    The Replicants
    MrKingsley
proving to everyone that the first round was purely a fluke. snatching a tasty punnet of 25 whole points for Daniel Norgen - Moonshine Got Me

    Notes:

flutey intro sounds a bit medievel. followed by some strings with an interesting level composition. Bassline on the strings keeping things grounded. This feels like a music connoseiur could listen to this for days and continue to find new things going on . Oh we go bluesy now! wsn't expecting that at all. It works. Some horn in the BG. Ohh this is Smooth AF. Drum beat. Helllooooo. I'm physically feeling this right now. body is being taken for a ride here. Yes. So glad I picked this as a category. Not one bad song yet (this is the 4th). Vocals enter. Interesting. I'm into it. clicking my fingers along with that drum beat. oooh god. that growl. yesss. gimme more of thsi. Some multivocals there. dingdingding. this is right up my alley. good god yes please. wow 4 minutes in. doesn't seem like it. oh we get a bit of a bass lick there into a change in form. some push here. oh back to the verse structure. That kept me very interested. jaysus, I'll be playing that little riff as soon as i'm finnished here. Tasty. Solo here, wow, seems a bit off there tbh. kind of ruined it for me. Sounds like me trying to write a solo myself. Spoiler, i'm **** at writing solos. Jaysus that main riff tho. beauty. would like a bit of heft before we finish up please. oh, we've a choral bit here now. very nice. Getting a deep south vibe out of this. one last verse with a belt would fit so nice in here. I don't think i'd ever get bored of that riff. 10 moonshine riff video please. yeah some vocal changes there to keep it interesting, nice. Solo ruining it again unfortunately.. Very good song. Really enjoyed that now.

Second last place sees our resident dosser Federation Of Free Traders
    skunkbags
with 10 Hour Video - Troll Song

    Notes:

lads! I ****ing love this lad. I have actually listened to this exact video for hours on end hahaha. My favourite is the saruman one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaqC5FnvAEc... Please watch it! Right some critical review. I love the tune it's wonderful. Ohhh a bit of high pitch belt followed by a deepass bit. niiiice. this is just good wholesome fun. huhuhuhu hahahaha hehehehe. lovely. the music - it's delish. Some lovely layers in there. I really like this. only last just under 2:30 mins which is a bit sad. lovely tune though. wonder if there's a legit long version? I've just given this a 7. then knocked off 2 points because it's not really long enough. just repeating it is a bit of a cheat. soznotsoz

Second place goes to The Medway Boys
    triggerooney
for Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven

I'm a bit angry that this scored so high, because it's too obvious, but jesus it's ****ing brilliant!

    Notes:

iconic intro. love to play it. one of the first things you learn as a guitarist haha. that synthy whistley flutey bit too, so tasty. The tune is so fantastical and mesmerising. The voice of an angel. this was my parents wedding song. Lyrics are amazing. it's actual poetry. the variation on the intro music into the first prechorus is a thing of majesty. as is the pre chorus itself. such a super song. It really is one of the best songs ever written. I don't have words really. Entering this was a surefire way to high points. i'd go as far as to say it's borderline cheating :P 'the pipers callin you to join him'. you know what. After listening to so many songs for this. This one is quite pure, as in there are very few moving parts or layers of different instruments. and it makes so much sense for the song. solo time, love this solo. such passion. I must learn int. 6:16 that bit is just immense. then the drum push and the 'wayow, wayow' push in for a belty outro verse, yes please. jaysus. Sometimes it's nice to just analyse a song you've known forever, it gives you a new appreciation for it.

Before we get into the final two. I want to bring your attention to the most disappointing part of this whole ordeal.

The second song I listened to was amazing. AMAZING. It blew me out of the water. Then I was brought around to the realisation that it was not long enough. I was sure nobody would enter a short song, so I checked with my middleman SK, and low and behold, there was another song with the exact same name floating about on youtube. This song was in no way up to the standard of the original one i listened to and it broke my heart.

    BROKE MY HEART.

Now onto the final two songs...

    Pulsion AKA
    Fixxxer
with Geinoh Yamashirogumi - Tetsuo (Akira Soundtrack) and 1 point

    Notes:

intro is very live sounding. a bit of organ to mix things up. hmmmm. I'm expecting things to kick off a bit. here we go. no we don't. hmmmmm. pretty bored here tbh. is he hitting glasses with sticks? weird sound. funny bells? I dunno. Gives me a castlevania vibe. Not musically, butthat's what i'm visualising listening to this. I doubt I'd look for this again to be honest. Not interesting me at all. It's not necessarily bad, but just doing nothing for me. I'm not pushed either way. Some heavy bit now. Still not interesting me. Jaysus only 4 minutes in. Daaaaah Daaaaah Daah Dah! I like that bit. yeah this is doing nothing for me whatsoever. I feel like it needs something visual to go along with it. The music itself is just bleh. 7 minutes in now. Just waiting for it to end tbh. ding dong ding dong. Ironic that this bit sounds like a ticky tocky clock countdown or something because I need it to end. Daaah Daaah Daah dah dah dahdah......... best bit of the song. other than that, not really anything in there that did anything for me.

AND the winner of the blackhole category:

Fun Fact parts 1-7 was going to be my example song, but when I saw this was entered, I thought it would give too much away, so i went with no example song.

    Level 16 AKA
    Strawberry Milkshake
with Pink Floyd - Shine on you crazy diamond Parts 6-9 and 27 tasty little points.

    Notes:

Used to listening to this song in it's entirity so this should be interesting. Not only that. but it was my example for this round :P straight in with the interference and a bassline. this guitar line is just so interesting. then you get the second guitar on top of it with a bit of heft. easy drum beat. jaysus, that high trupety type bit is tidy. love it. so many layers. everything adding something useful. nothing there is out of place. love it. love it. love it. It's difficult to be ojective against this because I know it so well. it's just pure power. Okay no we've the next section which is a bit more pushy. slidey guitar. so tasty. Pink Floyd were compositional geniuses. My god. I'd love to see how many layers they've got going on the production of this. bump up the intesity a bit here now, push the lead to a higher pitch. wow. just unreal. I have been in some terrible states listening to this song. by jaysus. absolute choon. everything grounded by that bassline. and then we revert back into the foundation of the rest of the song. into the lyrics. that guitar between the lyrics is just amazing. 6 or 7 notes and it conveys so much. Passionate vocals. power. a song that you can belt out as well. The chill out bit here is so nice. man so good. I made a mistake. I usually listen to the 1-7 mix. Not too familliar with part 8 here. It's super jazzy wehey. love it. wow this is noiiice. layers all over the shop. oh yeah can feel the foundation of the rest of the song here hitting part nine. very tasty. If anyone doesn't know this song, you should listen to it in the dark with some heavy loud sound system. it will do strange things to you. This is just so chill. I don't have much to say. nice bit of bass in the bg. the synth melodies are just on point. they fit so well. One note of guitar there for a second... you need to be a genius to do these things. amazing. love it.

Ah yeah. When I saw how my first entry went for category 1, I knew I was in a bit of trouble with this entry.

That's the same song as what i submitted btw, just a more energised remix of it. I could have submitted a thousand songs of a similar vein to that but when you dont know for sure what someone likes its hard to know what to do, so I just variated my entry.

I promise to give barney the song I should have submitted here haha

In my excitement to finish the round off, I forgot to include my notes on the highest scoring song that unfortunately wasn't entered...

    Notes:

Oooh i like this from the get go. super tasty. Deep beat. Ephemeral sounds in the BG. oh, we've some xylophone/steel drummage going on now too. Electro **** coming at me from all angles. Wow. Love it. This is going straight into one of my playlists. that mid pitch guitary bit is tiiiiidy. man, i need to invest in some more skullcrushers. reduces the bg music and then glitches into the next set. lovely. This is right up my alley. RIGHT UP IT. phasing bass, beauty. the main melody reminds me of another song, can't put my finger on it. Halfway in and I'm still loving it. Where's the smoke? Where's the strobe lights? Where's the Lazers? GODDAM i need a club right now. This is honestly just so perfectly put together. about 2 thirds through. I would like something before the end that blows it up a bit. oh there's a bit of a kick drum belt. something more, please. Give it to me! starting to need something to mix it up. Going overlong now with the same thing. ok,we've changed up a bit. Thin outro. Aw man I'm so heartbroken by that. It was literally a 10 until about 3/4 of the way in. The song I found was only 5:46 though. Feck sake. Just googled it and it looks like there may be two completely different versions of this. I'll rate both separately and you can tell me which one is yours.

    BOOOOOOOOOO!

    :pac:

It's a bit of a whopper tbf and Meshuggah are certainly an acquired taste, personally I love them. They are for my money the best band currently in the world. What they can do sound wise is jaw dropping. I saw them live a few years ago, about 4 rows from the front and they absolutely blew my mind, their technical ability is staggering, they are absolute machines.

From re-reading my notes, looks like i really liked the music. Just the vocal chord shredding and length that put me off.

What would you recommend as another listen? Obviously not something that's already been entered for the remaining categories :P

All of Meshuggahs songs have the throat shredding vocals but instrument wise I'd recommend Born in Dissonance (title track of their last album). I've never been assaulted by a silverback gorilla but I would be confident that this song is the aural equivalent of it. Rational Gaze is another one that just assaults the senses, like headbutting molten tar.

He can take as long as he needs for this one, I'm still on a high from the previous round and I'll be in the bottom 3 in this one no doubt :D
