So, somebody submitted a song, and I found that song on spotify. it was fabulous!

Then i realised it wasn't long enough. Turned out to be the wrong song with the same name.

Sad times, because that original song was the highest scoring blackhole listen 1. It's not even gonna be included. Sad times indeed.

Hope it's not mine you'll find it on YouTube or the album at 8mins 45sec

I was beginning to think my 22 minute behemoth had melted your face, jolly good show. Very curious to get your thoughts on it. For me, they are the best band currently going, what they can do rhythmically and tempo wise is staggering. Best live act I've ever seen too.

I can take some solace from knowing that it's definitely not me, because the comment doesn't start with "What the **** is this **** in my ears???"

Not personally replying to only you here spook, but remind all entrants.

Tusk is trying so hard to keep entries anonymous, can you please stop making your song identifiable to him.

It's a small thing to ask. After he has judged the round, you can identify with your songs all you like.

    Here we go...

    3. The Blackhole
Being a fan of classical music and Pink Floyd, you've gotta enjoy those songs that last a bit longer than your regular top 40. Gimme a song that's at least 7 minutes long.

The spotify playlist has only 22 songs and is 3hours and 17 minutes long. As such, I've only had time to listen to each one once for this round.

    Notes

love when songs start randomly like this. telling a story. setting the scene. whoa, then the song starts out of nowhere. nice little resolution straight of the bat. Sounds initially like something out of a musical. This is mad haha. music is catchy. deep vocals in for a bit, high vocals in for a bit. haha what is going on here. mad song. reminds me a bit of bike by pink floyd, just a mad song for the craic haha. honestly what the hell is happening here haha like 4 songs interstitched to each other. the bossa nova bit is cool. music is great and each individual bit is nice, but all together i'm just lost and confused. about 3:50 is the first time the song seems to be 1 song itself. musicality and vocals are nice throughout, but the song is just so mad that I don't know what's happening. Think i'd need to listen to this 3 or 4 more times to really get the hang of it. hitting 5:30 I'm liking it. I know where I am.

    Notes

soft painful piano intro. can't go wrong, but where does it go from here. that intro is interesting. there's pain in it, but also some snippets of joy. beautifully written piece of music there. lovely. wow, chords come in and up the emotion tenfold. drum time. vocals come up. not bad. multivocals i like. nice overlapping on the sounds. vocals over the piano melody. doesn't always work. does here. nice. i like this. ooh some whistley type stuff ther too. i like. that piano is tasty. the whole music setup is really nice. oh yeah, nice electric solo here. fits well. doesn't seem out of place. overlaid vocals. not bad. some belt here. lots of passion in the vocals here. i really like it. wow beautiful resolution in that last chord aroudn the 6:30 mark. delish. very good.

with 15 points for No Quarter - Led Zeppelin

    Notes

liking the intro. weird sounds, but the melody is sweet. that odd Bass note dropping every now and then is great. main music in now. not as nice. Ok grainy guitar here. I like it, that sound has an interesting balance against the rest of the music. bassline under the end of that guitar line resolves so nicely. bitt of phasey vocals. Pain in that is palatable. love that vocal effect. definitely adds to the song. music is awesome. that little guitar riff is just one of those things that makes your brain feel good. nice little solo here now, very understated. Funky effect on that guitar bit at the end. very nice. I need to listen to this on a hefty sound system. would say it's amazing.

    The Untouchables
    Ecclectic Bitfit
grabs a handy 12 points for 65daysofstatic - Come To Me

    Notes

About 50 seconds in a beautiful melodic high piano piece comes in, accompanied eventually by a lower key. They're lovely. They go brilliantly with the high hat and the intense grumble in the background. I know a few 65daysofstatic and generally like them. Electro bass is tasty. Vocals come in. Very repetetive, but the layers are deadly. Love the breakage of the production on the voice. into a heavy set, which is a bit off kilter, deep drums belting out with some electro vocals. The song continues to move on and doesn't dwell a lot on one sound or style. Similar to round one's winner in that fashion. coming into halfway and there's an intensity building. I'm ready for some payoff. would like to see a passion boost from somewhere. There's a background painful 'aaaahhhhh' which is interesting. Drums still belting down. Some more vocal layering which i like. High coming in to add to the intensity. Drums go rigid to emphasise it. Liking it. The vocals are a bit over repetetive, which is unfortunate, because the music isn't. Oh we have full on sentences now. I would have liked a bit more of this throughout, electric guitar pinging in the background now too. Fits nicely. They know how to layer instruments and vocals well for sure. I could definitely listen to this on repeat. ends with a nice operatic strings bit. might have been nice to see that throughout the song a bit too and then resolve it to hear. Good tune. Good Tune

with a nice 16 points for Loreena McKennitt - Mystic's Dream

    Notes

I see the name. I love Loreena McKennitt. Funny story, When I was in my early teens, i accidentally found a version of Greensleeves that broke my goddam heart. So much so that i had to stop listening to it. Fast forward a few years and a new pc. That song pops into my head, but I could never find it. For ages! I scoured the internet looking for it. I eventually found it and it was Loreena McKennitt. Then I started listening to more of her stuff. She's fantastic. Anyway. Onto the song...which I don't recognise btw....bassy intro nice. violin. Some vocals that feel kinda middle-eastern. a bit of flute there too. I like it. what a voice like. Oh wait the name is the mystic's dream. makes sense haha. Choir of laddies now with some aaaahs. Love this aaaahhh type of stuff. Deeep bassline underneath there too which is tasty. Main vocals come in with some ahhhhs too now. nice. ok now we've some intersting music coming in. vocals closely followed. music is a bit overpowering over the vocals. love that booouuuuuuwwww bit though. very nice. bit of uillean pipes there too. one of my favourite instruments. The passion it conveys is unlike any other instrument. This is a beauty of a tune. wow 4 minutes in already. her voice is just golden. expect a belt though. don't let me down pls. getting a bit more intense now. uilean pipes. god they smack the face off me. heart beat changes tempo when that comes in. more choir ahhs. nice. Hope there's a push to elevate things tho. don't just let it fizzle out.... 1 minute left. looks like I'll be let down. uileann pipes in the bg though is helping. nice nice nice. I would listen to that a lot. nice song. If you like this and don't know much of her. check out highwayman.

    Guardians Of Logik
    Kow-lye-dough
grabs himself 11 points for Guns N' Roses - Estranged

    Notes:

liking the music off the bat. Vocals are very operatic. oh tasty lead guitar here. Yes, gimme moar. I don't know this song. that's delish tho. Axel in hahah. How did he get away with singing like that. Mad lad. Sounds like he's taking the piss. Doesn't detract too much from the song though. Probably because we're all used to him by now. The music is still going strong here. Drums a bit more emphasised now. That deeeeeep drum beat they seem to use is tidy. we've got a weird trebly vocal on the left headphone only now. Strange. and now it's centered. music still belting away. Lead pretty much throughout this whole song really. I love the operatic bit of the vocals. It's brilliant. suits him so well. ok we're mixing it up now with some piano. Oh Lead back in now with a screech. that riff is noice. I'll be learning that. soft bit now with some layered guitar. soft and chill. then a belt of the drums. Still soft enough. nice little relaxy piano bit. bit of a zelda sounding piano bit in there, so that wins me over. There's a belt of vocals. Not bad, not too interesting though. keeps it going. Lyrics don't seem super well put together, but sure. Solo time. Not a bad solo, sounds a bit like there was some unedited improv that made it in at the start of that solo, doesn't seem to fit. weird. ends nicely though. Diiiaaaaahhhhh. nice. piano break again. nice, very atmospheric here. drum belt and guitar solo. solo is noice. A few bit seeming a bit off there. Weird like. pretty decent song alright. wouldn't be going to the top of my GnR favs list though. do we get an outro solo? nope.

I was going to say Homer's write up seemed deserving of more points, then I saw mine :p

The vocals are Robert Smith, just in case that little nugget slipped through the net ;)

I don't know what any of that means.

yeah looking at the table placings now, it's tough that some of these went so low, because overall the round was very very good.

in another round they'd probably have scored much closer to the top

with 17 points for Phantom of the Opera - Lindsey Stirling

    Notes

Couldn't find on Spotify. Oh yeah nice. I know this song. Not this version, but I've heard lindsey stirling before. Yeah that was a nice bendy bit. ok heavy time. wow that lead is amazing. love this type of music. I actually think I may have heard this before. Classical music turned electric gets me. I love it. little soft bit now, very nice.I can see myself frolicking through a meadow... in a milkmaids dress. danger is imminent i'm sure. now i'm sitting in front of the cabin, lamenting the days of old. Where did it all go wrong. why did i do what i did. oh the shame. oh the pain. ......and we're back to reality with some heat. this is very nice. chilled out again now. and we're back to the main line. operatic heft. so tasty. throw in that electric guitar and the lead violin is just wonderful. REally well put together this song. they've not overdone it on any one end, everything gels so well. would like an electric guitar belt. ok, violin belt instead. key change. nice. can't go wrong with a key change. oh, another key change. ok. there's an intensity in there that get's the heart racing. nice stuff.

    The Carebears
    Barney
with 10 points for Nina Simone's - Sinnerman.

Looking at this now, can't believe this starts off the bottom ten. great song. just goes to show how good this round was!.

    Notes:

love this song. that intro is so tasty. Nina Simone's voice is something else. NEver noticed the song was so long. this is super jazzy. I'm feeling that standup bass plucking. 'what's the matter with you rock' love it. the attack of the high hat is toight. can't help but bounce with this song. choir of 'power', feels like a proper gospel bit there. levels are a bit off here. power bit is a bit long. piano solo, jazzy bit here now, taking a break. nice. R/L balance is annoying though. Does that piss anyone else off or just me? I like that guitar bit with the trail off. very nice. random clapping.... ok.... some stamping on the floor? nice little piano section here, super melodic. fade back... vocals in... bluesy guitar lick in the bg. nice. 6 minutes in. they timed it well there, any longer to get back into the vocals and it would have bored me out. speed of the music feels like it's been upped due to the extra notes added. gives a sense of rushing. nice. classic nina simone vocal solo. absolute passion. nice song. Think a shorter version would be better though.

Not looking forward to the notes when it gets to mine :D Normally if a song exceeds Eurovision limits, it's button pushed and gone onto next track, however having listened to some of the tracks so far, admittedly scrolling through as I haven't time this morning to listen, I'm going to have to find the time, some good listening there.

If sinnerman is only 10 points then I fear for my selection. That’s a great shout. I’ve listen to it so many times before but never realised it was that long.

Sign of a great song I suppose

with 18 points for Tool - Right in two

    Notes:

toney guitar intro with some slidy bassnotes. and some pingy lead twinges. slightly unhinged feeling. i like. vocals are in, fit so well with the music. nice effect on the vocals keeping that air of strangeness up front and present. some high pitched xylophone or bell tapping. that 'waaayoooooow' is nice. muted guitar set here is tidy. loving the vocals here. nice nice nice layers. the resolution on the vocals is tasty. He's hitting the resolving notes so perfectly. makes such a difference. I really like this. this is beautifully put together this song. there's a deep sadness in the vocals that occasionally just hits me. can't really follow the lyrics too well with the levels, but it works. heavy bit here. Vocals don't drown out and everything still fits. creamy heavy guitar. got some wooden drums here. nice. feels tribal. 'baaaouuuuuw' another song had something similar to this. loreena mckennitt maybe. such a super sound. gives a real tribal sound or something. like it. heavy again. but clear. nice tune. solo maybe? drum belt with mad vocal effects behind. has a strange effect putting me offkilter. very interesting. guitar taking a front seat here. yeah i'm liking it. love the sound on the guitar. it's gritty, but smooth. vocals coming in now but not detracting. there's a finesse in the chord progression and vocal resolution that just feels so right. Then we've a belt from the singer. That was lovely. would have liked a bit more of that, to really hear him go ham and proper belt. nice song. likey.

    The Lost Boys AKA
    persepoly
with 9 points here for Donna Summer Love To Love You Baby original long version (Disco 70s)

    Notes

ok 17 minutes. here we go. This is a fairly well known song, so probably not gonna get a fair shout. I like the into, porno music. tasty. porno vocals too. wow. yeah this is nice. excuse me while i excuse myself. hahaha. nice little bassline in there. some high synth melodies. pretty nice. head swaying. secondary voice there is a bit of a distraction. not the orgasmic noises, the actual vocals. hope the missus doesn't overhear me listening to this haha. ok yeah, still not bad. hope it changes a bit though. 3 minutes in, it's getting a bit stale. lots of layering going on here. getting a bit bored now though to be honest. 4 minutes in. we're losing a bit of music here and going for a solo bassline. where do we go from here? woah. bassline feels broken. weird. ok some high hat and guitar coming in here now. can't imagine this version would ever be released these days. They made the right choice droppping it from 17 minutes to 3ish for the single edit. shoulders still bouncing to that wiccky wiccky guitar. some nice brass in here now. sounds like a number from a musical here now. it's jazzy as heck. nice. body is gone into full on jive mode. look like a speacial case dancing on the chair here. oh more orgasms. ah this is getting a bit boring now to be honest. 8.5 mins in. there's waaay too much of the same thing going on. ok, i'm conviced that's actual orgasms in the bg now. oh god. we just got some jazz flute in now, wow. what even is life right now. sounds a bit like a sesame street tune here hahahahaa. okay, phazy synth haha. what is this song. how many different drugs was this nut on. very bored now. and we get that bassline back. so catchy you just cant not buzz out to it. then the musical brass bit haha. this thing is mental. i just don't know. what is happening right now. super choral vocals with brass behind. mad craic altogether. this bit is actually brilliant. A lot of the individual bits are excellent, it's the inbetween bits, and the length of some of the bits that's just offputting. 13 mins in now, there's a hard stop and we're back to the start. heavy kickdrum. ah i'm actually upset about this, because it could be deadly even as a 9 minute or so song. there's actually enough in there to fill it. but it's just too much fluff. boo. loses points for that. I could have seen this getting a solid 8.5 if it was half as long. 15 minutes in now. please end. please. it's not that i'm hating it. I'm just bored. losing more points the longer it goes on hahah.
