How many public parks do you think Salthill needs?

100 years ago there were a lot fewer private vehicles. So having ghe same frequently ( every 20 mins, plus a few extra) is pretty good going.

How many more car parks do you think it needs?
I'd be happy with every 10 minutes for Salthill route, every 20min is daft

Added benefit, once a service is at 10 mins or less frequency, the timetable becomes redundant. You just rock up to a stop and within a few mins a bus comes along

Very true - the last 10yr usage history(apart from 2020) of the 409# in Galway City is good example of that.

In what way was 2020 different?

Personally I'd see any every-20-minutes bus between Salthill and Newcastle as far more beneficial than doubling the frequency from the city centre.

But neither would see most people who go to Salthill for recreation arriving by car.

    Read the sentence again.

    Read the sentence again.

    I've re-read it 4 times.

In my experience, 2020 was the only time in the last 10 years that the timetabled frequency was regularly achieved on the 409.

Is there less rush hour traffic atm in the city ? Thanks

    https://connachttribune.ie/national-transport-authority-to-progress-galways-park-and-ride/

"Director of Services for Transport, Ruth McNally, also said that the NTA was looking at the potential of sites in the city for Park and Ride and she insisted that money – or a lack of it – was not halting progress.

“Money is not a major issue for capital projects,” she said."

What a great way to get value for taxpayers! Putting out that money is no object will surely put them in the driving seat for negotiating land prices

Looks like the City Council will have access to new staff and design teams dedicated to active travel. Will be interesting to see what comes out of this!

Been here before with the GTU back in the late 00's, not much came out of that. Cross the fingers that I will be wrong.

For the GTU didn't they just increase the headcount with the same skills set? Roads engineers with non-urban county council experience...

At least these staff should be "dedicated to" active travel. The "Regional Cycling Design Offices" will be a fresh new tool too. I think it's hope for some progressive projects that otherwise wouldn't get moving.

Very true VanWildcard, in the most they were. Need a mix alright for this "Regional Cycling Design Offices", certainly need more of a mix of professionals probably only 1/2 of the unit to have actual engineering expertise

The guy behind the work in Dun Laoghaire Rathdown last year had some good thoughts on this...

Any example set by DLR County Council illustrates the type of users we might expect to see on a protected route in Salthill

Anyone know how the new CrossSt/MiddleSt layout went today?
    Any collisions?
Has the sky fallen down there?

I think it’s fully closed until 6pm this evening.

Heard its up to the Council to apply for the roles to be filled though - so they might not bother to fill all 22. Needs a wide mix of people, its failed to date just having Civil Engineers(Roads).

Here's hoping the old adage of "use it or lose it" which motivates public spending encourages GaCiCo to apply for all 22 and fill them all.

I'm honestly trying not to get too excited but can you imagine what the city will be like in 10 years for active travel........ protected cycle lanes, protected junctions, permeability controls, a connected network of bike infrastructure, speed limitation measures, primary school kids across the city all biking to and from school safely

    Ahh one can dream :o

Of course no guarantee any of the above would happen but what would be their roles if not that

Ditto - Even if they just hired 2/3 people for next 10yrs whose sole purpose was to address permeability issues all over City they could make a big difference. Alot of New build areas in last 30yr need serious interventions, that are in the main very cheap to implement

There's a new estate in Roscam. No way to walk to the shops or bus stop. No footpath to the Dublin Road. Just more car traffic joining the Dublin Rd from the Coast Rd.
    Utterly ridiculous.

    Civil Engineers doesn't equal roads.

Traditionally we saw a lot of that in the last 50 years in Ireland but that's more down to city/county council culture and a reluctance to change by a few long serving people in charge of direction or funding.

Civil engineering is a very wide field and the right Civil Engineers with the right experience and interests can certainly achieve very different results that what we've been getting. A mix of different professions is ideal but don't dismiss the civil engineering input.

    The Coastal Mobility Route in Dublin was mostly realised by civil engineers;

We need a lot of conversation about this.

Many, many people want permeability restrictions, for some very solid reasons.

Sure, dark alleys do not good infrastructure make and lead to antisocial behaviour

Lots of ways around that though
