Hi. Hope someone can help with updating my sons old laptop as I need it as a backup.

Its a Fujitsu Lifebook A series.
Running: Windows 8 (it will not allow me to update to windows 8.1 for some reason)
64 bit OS. Intel Celeron CPU B830 @1.8GHZ 4GB (which I hope I can upgrade!)

I have tried various download packs for windows 8 upgrades (clearconpressionflax.exe, Windows 8.1 various extensions, and none of them worked). I have read that these are necessary before I have a hope of upgrading to windows 10!

I am open to suggestions (other than throwing the laptop out):D

    Thanks in advance!!

As promised - the update is is that it appears to have worked. Had to leave it run overnight doing updates etc. Got as far as set up I think (the choices to make) but left it there. I'll check on it after work again!
Thanks a mil for the link. You saved me a lot of time. I can even update my poor mum's windows 7 laptop! Haha
    THANK YOU!!!!!

Thanks Biko. I'll give that a shot later as well. I've a laptop on W7 and have been getting messages about the support discontinuing in the new year.

One question. Does it wipe the hard drive or will everything still be there afterwards?

I think content will be saved BUT tbh this is a point in your computer's life where you should back up everything somewhere - a USB memory or the cloud or somewhere else.

I've upgraded a few old windows Vista and 7 laptops to 10 no problem. However, due to the older hardware I always to a clean install and upgrade the storage to a SSD. Clean, fresh install of Win 10 reduces the risk of user profile related problems. Then I stick the old HDD into a SATA to USB adapter and manually copy all of the users' files over to the users' folder on the new SSD and away you go. Then you have the old HDD with all the d

Only tricky area is that you've to reinstall all the hardware drivers and sometimes there might not be a Win10 driver available for older hardware. However, with a bit of fiddling around in Device Manager older device drivers can be got to work in most cases.

I have rescued 10 year old laptops that were written off by users on this forum as hopeless cases and not worth keeping. With a bit of effort I got them back up and running with Windows 10 and back to their delighted owners who are saved the cost of a new laptop for a few more years hopefully.

Of course they don't run as fast as new laptops but for general day to day use like internet, email and Office they are perfectly fine.
