Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

CH Drain/Flush/Clean/Inhibit

So I have 1 new replacement radiator being added to my CH (by builder) & thought I would take the opportunity to add a couple of TRV's & drain/flush/clean/inhibit my CH system while I'm at it. On the face of it, it seems straight-forward. Just wanted to check this should be ok. Here's the system:

    • Combi Boiler (i.e. no HW Tank)
    • Fernox TF1 filter fitted below boiler & below all rad pipework
    • System was powerflushed, all rads individually flushed, inhibitor added c. 6 years ago
    • All rads still fine- no cold spots
    • Current rad water is black, but filter seems to be catching any particles/sludge
    Procedure(?):
    • Turn off boiler electrical switch
    • Remove magnet, open drain valve on TF1 & drain entire system from here. There is a drain valve on one of the rads but it is actually higher than the TF1, so I presume draining from here would actually work better & be easier?
    • Use filling loop to flush system out
    • Fit 2x TRV's to 2 other existing rads (would it make sense to also disconnect these rads, remove & flush them individually as well?)
    • Add Fernox F3 Cleaner into TF1, fill system again via filling loop, bleed all rads, pressurise system again
    • Leave in system for c. 1 week
    • Drain/flush again
    • Fit new rad (Builder)
    • Add Fernox F1 Protector into TF1, fill system again via filling loop, bleed all rads & re-pressurise.
Is that it or am I missing something? I understand that a powerflush would work better than a chemical flush, but it would be a lot more expensive & as it was powerflushed c. 6 years ago hopefully this would be sufficient. I know some will say hire a professional pumber- a DIY job might come unstuck should any joints/rads leak, so I do understand there is a risk involved.

If it was correctly power flushed six years ago with a filter and regular adequate inhibitor dosing and no issues since, e.g. not having to regularly top up the system pressure, then, in my opinion, the water should still be quite clean.
Do yourself a favour and get it properly power flushed.

Thanks for the reply. Yes to all of the above except the system hasn't had an inhibitor dosing since 6 years ago & there have been some pressure top-ups over that time, so perhaps that could explain the water being black-ish? I hear you on the powerflush, but without any issues spending another €400-€500 seems a big outlay.
