The obsession with the public purse in all of this is comical, far greater sums routinely pissed away by the governments.

Pissing away money on scammers from Albania or Georgia isn't comical.

44% of asylum applications here in 2019 are from safe countries.

You do realise a country can be considered "safe" and people are still persecuted for being gay/christian/muslim etc... right? It's nowhere near as black and white as some people are making out.

I know quite a few refugee's, and some of the things they've gone through is absolutely horrific. Are there people gaming the system? Absolutely, and they should be sent home. But to turn away people in genuine need because of those who would take advantage of the system is not what should be happening.

I do agree that putting a center somewhere like Achill is absolutely stupid. I'm in a small town with one, and the residents have absolutely nothing to do, and no hope of finding work anywhere.

Are you a taxpayer yourself ?

It brings it's own valid perspective.

Yes, as is every citizen of purchasing age in this country. If you mean taxpayer as in working yes also, its textbook divide-and-rule-class-warfare, "taxpayer" vs "sponger", "public sector" vs "private sector", "migrant" vs "locals". Its worked for the ruling classes everywhere for many centuries so why change a winning formula now? If your ire so driven by mishandling of state funds then why do the ones regarding race seem to always generate far more traction on this?Hmmmm...if only the Childrens Hospital debacle (only 1 billion euro and counting) provoked such bile in people.

I didn't put it in those terms, so let's now put your trolling, pejorative tactic out of the way, ok ?

Hmmmm... if only my bile provoked more people like you to take in refugees into your own homes, etc etc

I would say, speaking for myself, that mishandling of state funds is only part of what irks me about this. That doesn't make it an unimportant factor, at all.

Especially since you expect the state to be the expression of your conscience in this.

Prior to EU work visas changes, asylum application from Georgia and Albania = very low.
Post work visa changes, asylum applications from Georgia and Albania = very high.

    It really is that simple

That's no way to talk about the Georgian ambassador.

Is that a joke? It doesn't make any sense.

Nobody is being asked to take refugees into their "own homes" though are they? We have had refugees in town nearest to me for years.

Its a sliding scale of distance now? Minutes from said town, work and socialise reguarly there, only fears id have are of the local scum.

When it suits you you're well capable of the scathing or flippant remarks, but when you get a taste of your own, you're suddenly bewildered by it all.

You have a very tiresome approach to all this.

    Again, the well-worn tactic.

    'Shur, our own are worse.'

    :(

Once again Varadkar's ignorance sticks it's head out of selfie land.
His talk on Georgia and Albania is nothing short of idiotic. Gays in both places are persecuted and beaten. There may not be a war the someone Instagramed Leo about, but that doesn't mean it's safe for everyone.
I would have thought Leo might be more well read on the issue, but then again, it is Leo.

Well in fairness, everyone on the thread is 'minutes' from the same town. Be it 5 or 5000 of them.
It is a straightforward question, how far away do you live from the town?

No you haven't. Who told you 70 men were being put up in the hotel? Or was it simply barstool gossip?

    Of course. Ask away.

    I did actually.
Now I could go down the same route as you, and just ignore questions put to me, but them Id be no better than you. So...

The people who attended one of the early meetings were informed by the authorities that the hotel was assessed as suitable for 70 people.

Later on, it was uncovered that very little assessing had actually taken place, which only underlines how people behind the move were being disingenuous throughout and why people dont trust them now. The reality is there has been as much genuine proof offered for the 70 men as there has been for the 13 vulnerable women... One is swallowed whole, the other, people query it. Why do you think that is? Have the alt left infiltrated all around them, like the alt right?

If it means paying more money in tax in the next budget and budgets to come because of high percentage of chancers. That's a no no. Bad enough paying for the poor value for money with things here as is. Justifying tax increases and the likes of this ****e on going is very comical indeed.

Never once heard of a tax rise due to immigrants, nor have I ever heard of a tax decrease because of a lack of them.

Never once heard of a tax rise due to immigrants, nor have I ever heard of a tax decrease because of a lack of them.

17 year studies of UK migration find that it had a negative impact on uk finances for non EEC migrants to the tune of 104-134 BILLION pounds. while they may not mark it 'immigrant tax' the money has to come from somewhere.

But taxes are spent are they not? Monies that could be spent elsewhere?
Im not really interested in this angle of the debate, but you are clearly being disingenuous about it

So we just take in anyone who says their gay and could be beaten up?

Lame duck excuse and anyone could use it.

The point is singling out those areas because they aren't war torn is stupid.
Everyone is taken in based on their story. Leo stating a lot of chancers come from those places because they are deemed 'safe' is pig ignorant coming from the political leader of a country.

All depends on the immigrant in question doesn't it. Contribute or complete drain.

Grand so its all a hoax on my part,no refugees live in any town in Ireland, Achill has been unfairly targeted as the epicentre of mass migration.

So individuals cause tax rises? I always thought they were the elected ones.
