huge swing to Tories in Workington. Lab since 1970. barometer for the rest imo. Darlington too.

Sad that Dennis Skinner looks like he's beat. Represented Bolsover since 1970, gave his wages to the miners & now he's turfed out.

The primary emotion I have about it now is "You broke it, you own it" but on reflection ,the schadenfreude is misplaced.

Many parts of the UK are complete basket cases where your life chances are dismal.
People are dying under a horrifically cruel social care system.
Poverty means more food banks than McDonald's.

The only thing ordinary decent people can do in the face of 5 more years of Tory callousness is to organise locally, and bring back a sense of community.

My fear is that this thing that has taken over politics in the US and the UK is contagious.

And most of these places just voted Tory

If you are working zero hour contract with a family in Wigan or Hudderfield or Middlesborough how can you vote Tory who have cut NHS spending by 2/3rd in real terms since 2010 , have kept all spending on adult social care back for 10 years , have cut all youth programs and police to the bare bones so knife crime is rife and the probation service and prisons cannot keep up with dangerous criminals.Education has been underfunded so teacher ratios have declined and the NHS cannot get nurses a vast amount of who use food banks

This is the truth of Britain in the last 9 years yet the poorer areas in the country voted for more ..

Shows the strength of spin, soundbites and media slant over reality

Turning of channel 4 now but I am sure the response in the morning when the full results are in will be how the UK (well really just England) is full of idiots that don't know what's good for them.
For any politico that's suprised by this result, remain have one every poll by variable margins, however only seen one poll on this but think there is more but 2nd referendum always polled as less popular than enacting Brexit, it's not a poll that get quoted as much though as it doesn't fit the online sphere s narrative.

Queen speeches will never be the same again. A proper old socialist. Like Tony Benn. Respect to men like that.

Genuinely feel bad for Skinner about this, even with the 2017 manefesto I feel he would have held on

Nigel Dodds' failure will be the one to watch. Edwin Poots is squirming. I wish I had some champers now.

Any idea what time Swinson's seat is likely to be announced?

She's on the way to the count anyway, but it's Scotland so might take a while.

I believe each country should have total control of their issues without certain influences from europe.
    Which issues ?

Specifics please or you may as well be handwaving or dog whistling

UK has control over the £ , Defence, non-EU migration (which is soaring)
(EU migration is reciprocal and the unemployed and criminals can be deported)

The UK SHARES and has a VETO on big issues like customs duties and health and safety and food quality and workers rights and access to hospital treatment and all sort of stuff that people who can't buy they way out trouble might appreciate.

The UK shafted steel workers all over the EU by allowing China to dump steel into the EU to save the average UK family an annual total of £4.80 on cheap Chinese shoes. Compare and contrast to Trump actions and tariffs on the same.

So I would argue that far from taking control an independent UK will continue to be China's bitch.

    Seriously.

Alan Johnson would have made a good labour leader at one time.

Are the DUP expected to be decimated then?

    One small relief.

I don't think I'm gonna stay up that long so.

I'll wait for North Down and hit the scratcher.

    SDLP 2

    SF 6/7

    Alliance 1

    UUP 1/0

A pox on both your houses ;)

    But I want to believe

Alliance deputy leader Stephen Farry being hugged by party colleagues at the count centre. A confirmed win for him in North Down - Sylvia Hermon's former seat - expected shortly......

Hmm going from 10 seats to 8 doesn’t seem that bad. I’d prefer if they went to 3 or 4... or ideally zero.

If that's accurate, its a massive result in Derry.

McCallion won marginally last time, and the people of Derry don't think she has done much since she got the seat. So it is good to see them punished. At last people have reacted against them not sitting in Stormont for 1000 days.

I hope the absence of the usual anti-brexit posters on this thread and the other one is a sign they've given up. I wouldn't count on it though, they might be regrouping and concocting Plan B+.
