60 - Sugar Sugar. Poppy bubble gummy sweetness

62 - What's Up. I remember hearing this covered by a band in The Roisín Dubh in Galway years and years ago. It reminds me of an amazing time.

63 - Wicked Game. One of my all time favourites. Beautiful.

64 - Heartbeats. I like it better than Baker Street :p

    Oh! I missed one!

    Love Changes Everything :)

    NOOOOO, I want another sixty-four matches. :(

Only 2 of my 5 nominations made it through, two of the fallen went out to arguably worthier opposition but I will remain bitter over Bitch losing to Coco Jambo.

That was a travesty. Bitch is clearly the superior track.

Nope. And I like a boogie but I won’t do that.

Nor that just want to dance the night away song either.

I won't do that was a brill record but it doesn't qualify , meatloaf had far more hits than the OP allows for

That's round 1 almost finished, see you in January for round 2

The Calling - Wherever You will Go 5 Vs 4 Shawn Mullins - Lullaby
The J. Geils Band - Centerfold 5 Vs 4 The Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town
The Archies - Sugar Sugar 4 Vs 5 Los Del Rio - Macarena
Climie Fisher - Love Changes Everything 4 Vs 4 Glenn Mederios - Nothings Gonna change my love for you

If we could resolve these 4 before then, that would be great

    Match 58

Centrefold. What a classic, wish I'd remembered it for my list.

    Match 63

Louie Louie. Possibly the greatest garage classic of the 60s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,836 ✭✭✭✭TheValeyard

    R1 Match 60

Los Del Rio - Macarena (classic childhood)

    R1 Match 61

Glenn Mederios - Nothings Gonna change my love for you (better than the other one)

    R1 Match 62

    4 Non-Blondes - What's Up (memories of childhood)

    R1 Match 63

The Kingsmen - Louie Louie (what a classic, what a song)

    R1 Match 64

Gerry Raferty - Baker Street (its got saxa-ma-phone)

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

    Match 60
Sugar Sugar, it's a sweet song, pun intended

    Match 61
Love Changes Everything, catchy decent pop tune

    Match 62
Umm... for the fervour of the song, the 80s power ballad brat pack style thing, St Elmos' Fire

    Match 63
    Wicked Game

    Match 64
Heartbeats... because i nominated it... but c'mon, up against THAT sax solo... sigh... but still, heartbeats it is.

Los Del Rio - Macarena (classic childhood)

Vale you beautiful bastard just before those sugar crazed freaks took Macarena out in the first round!

    Yes!!

Match 54, I'm going to vote for the Calling, really like both songs here, but I'd probably listen to the calling more.

And with that, round 1 is wrapped up.

I will try get round 2 started tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,465 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

I will post the first 2 matches of round 2 now.

First to 6 again, with a reason please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,226 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

I'm too late with my votes but what the heck...

    R1 Match 57
Gotye - somebody that I used to know
    VS
Yes - Owner Of A Lonely Heart – My vote.

    R1 Match 58
The J. Geils Band - Centerfold
    VS
The Dream Academy - Life in a Northern Town - My vote.

    R1 Match 63
    The Kingsmen - Louie Louie
    VS
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. - My vote.

    R1 Match 64
Gerry Raferty - Baker Street - My vote.
    VS
    Jose Gonzalez – Heartbeats
    ……….
Gerry Raferty - Baker Street - Arguably the best one-hit wonder ever.
Not a fully-fledged one-hit wonder, but okay for this thread:
    Night Owl – UK – 5
    Get it Right Next Time – UK – 30, US – 21
Right Down the Line – US -12.
    Home and Dry – US – 28
    Days Gone Done – US - 17.
    I know the first three!
    ..........................................................................
#63 - Wicked Game, an absolutely brilliant song. I wasn't sure if Chris Isaak had other hits or not, otherwise may have nominated it myself.

    ...................................................
    Blue Hotel –UK - 17
Can’t Do a Thing to Stop Me – UK -36

Los Del Rio - Macarena (classic childhood)

I read that and thought "how young are you?", then looked and it was 1993!

So now it's "how old are we?" :p

    R2 Match 1

    Dario G - Sunchyme

    Vs

    Suzanne Vega - Luka

    R2 Match 2

    Damien Rice - Cannonball

    Vs

Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Sunchyme and Show Me Heaven as they remind me of football and chocolate respectively and are both great tunes in opposite ways.

    Sunchyme - Its happy
    Cannonball - Memories

Luka for me as i like stairs

    Cannonball as its amazeballs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,213 ✭✭✭Irish Aris

    Match 1: Suzanne Vega-Luka.
For me a very iconic song and I hope it makes it all the way to the final rounds.

Match 2: Maria McKee-Show Me Heaven.
Wonderful ballad - and overall I found the Days of Thunder soundtrack interesting.

  • Registered Users Posts: 282 ✭✭norabattie

Susanne Vega - Luka - bit depressing but prefer it to the other one

Damien Rice - only cos Show me heaven is annoying!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    R2 Match 1
    Suzanne Vega - Luka

Intro to Sunchyme doesn't catch me as much as Luka, couldn't hit the skip button fast enough TBH

    Luka - it’s such a sad song

    I forgot the other one

Oh wow, Kolido doesn't waste time! :p

I'll go for Luka for the first one.
Sunchyme is grand but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it.

For the second one I'll go with Show Me Heaven, nice song with a great vocal. Cannonball is nice enough but a bit overplayed, and I think Damien Rice has better songs than it.

Oh. Gotta go with cannonball. Don’t think it’s worthy of winning the comp but can’t be having that show me heaven going any further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    R2 Match 2
Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven

Again if the tune doesn't catch me in first 30 or so seconds it's usually a skip to next tune so edges out Cannonball by a full 15 seconds

Video makes this a brilliant OHW. Song is a bit sh1te though but good enough to progress for me here.

Love this song. Great entry, prob would have entered it myself if Kolido had given me 41 slots instead of 40 :P

    R2 Match 1

Dario G - Sunchyme (I dont remember the other one)

    R2 Match 2

Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven (just a better song, and the other one disappointing me as it was not the cannonball song I was expecting)

All eyes on Kursk. Slava Ukraini.

    Sunchyme and Cannonball

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Sunchyme - was a close one and I nearly went for Luka, but the upbeat and sunshiny tone of Sunchyme won me over at the final moment.

Show Me Heaven - absolute belter of a song and feel deserves to be in the competition more, even though I do love Cannonball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,315 ✭✭✭Sam Hain

    Suzanne Vega - Luka
Great song and probably the best ever song about child abuse .

Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven
    Balls to the wall balladry.

Tough decision on the first one but Vega by a hair’s breadth for being awesome

Less tough on the second one, McKey is a great song.

I think it was about physical abuse against a woman.

I just checked. It looks like your're right! I always thought Luka was a woman and I think quite a few others did too!

I wasn't around at the start. Could someone tell me if Bjork It's All So Quiet or Toto Africa were in this contest?

Both Toto and Bjork had a whole rake of high charting singles, so neither would've been eligible for this.

Hanson actually had about half a dozen hits in the UK

That's a surprise. Good thing Hanson wasn't included or Declan Walsh would have thrown his laptop out the window.
