Kiss Me as it's kinda cute and soppy.

Love Will Tear Us Apart as we belt it out at Bohs any time our Center Midfielder Keith Ward slaloms through the opposition but we oh so cleverly change the word "Love" to "Ward" and "Us" to "You". So it goes "Ward....Ward will tear you apart again". Phenomenal.

Show Me Heaven. Close, but there's a bit more heft to it than Kiss Me

Love Will Tear Us Apart. It's just an incredible song. So incredible that even the Bohs can't ruin it ;)

    Match 15

Show Me Heaven. It's shocking that this is Maria McKee's only big hit, she had done great songs.

    Match 16

Love Will Tear Us Apart. One of the truly great songs of the 80s.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Show Me Heaven - close choice, but slightly prefer this one

Love Will Tear Us Apart - much better song

#15 - Both good songs but I'll go for Kiss Me just because it's more my era and so has nostalgia factor advantage.

#16 - Love Will Tear Us Apart. While I accept Necro's point about Joy Division not really fitting the profile a OHW, it's just a far better song than the other one (imo)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,696 ✭✭✭Pretzill

Show me Heaven is the better or the two for me
And the first song ever to be played on MTV ... Video Killed the Radio Star (because it didn't)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,424 ✭✭✭✭Rikand

Kiss me, cause I used to play it at gigs

Pass on the other one. I hate them both

This is less tough as once again I just don't see Joy Division as OHWs.

So the Buggles and their murderous desires towards radio stars get my vote.

A couple of people have said they don't see Joy Division as One Hit Wonders. Neither is Buggles in that case - they had 2 other Top 40 hits: Plastic Age, which reached the Top 20, and Clean Clean!

In fact, ironically, Joy Division would be more One Hit Wonder as Love will Tear reached the Top 20 three different occasions (so one song) and Atmosphere reached #34! That's only two hits as opposed to three hits for Buggles.

    Anyway, here's my votes!

    R 3 Match 15
Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me - Nice tune with nice guitarwork and accordion (could be keyboards) sounds. My vote.
    Vs
Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven - Good performance.

    R 3 Match 16
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star - Bit of an iconic tune. However...
    Vs
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart - Classic alternative love song. My vote.

    R3 16

Video killed the radio star, time for a remix though, maybe " mp3's killed the pop star"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,973 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

R 3 Match 15 - Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven. Maria winning the 'you know I want to bang you?' mixtape matchup.

R 3 Match 16 - Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star. Buggles kills the dreams of another wannabe star.

Joy Division had three seperate albums chart in the top ten, if that's a one hit wonder I'm a monkeys uncle.

Still we ain't going by album sales so I guess it's technically correct.

    Kiss me

    And

    Love will there us apart

2 lovely songs with music in them

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Four good songs. But, Show Me Heaven, I just prefer over Kiss Me.

And Love Will Tear Us Apart is quality whereas Video is merely good fun.

Exactly. Albums are not relevant here or the fact that Transmission got to #4 in the UK Indie Charts!

How, on earth is Joy Division not a OHW:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joy_Division_discography#Singles

How many hit singles do they have??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,422 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Currently Kiss me 6 - 6 Show me heaven

Will call it at 10 and get round 4 under way.

They had two hits, including Atmosphere. As I said, they are much more OHW than Buggles.

Anyway, both acts qualify under the rules devised for here, in that neither had more than 3 Top 20 songs and each act was associated particularly with one song.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,422 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Going to vote kiss me as I would have listened more to it back in the day, and I still like it.

So sixpence and joy division go through

Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me 7 6 Maria McKey - Show Me Heaven
Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star 4 7 Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

Atmosphere wasn't a hit on the UK charts. Only the UK Indie charts. They only had one it. So pffft :P

At the final 16, we will stick with first to 7 votes this round also.

For anyone interested, here is a spotify playlist of all the songs.

I beg to differ! It reached No. 34 in the regular UK Charts in 1988. That's a hit in my book. It doesn't matter anyway because it didn't reach the top 20 for these rules. Love Will Tear Us Apart was the only one.

    R 4 Match 1

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart

    Vs

Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me

    R 4 Match 2

    Chris Isaak - Wicked Game.

    Vs

The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Love Will Tear Us Apart is just a fantastic song.

    As is Wicked Game.

Both are better than their opponents. That's where my votes lie.

R 4 Match 1 - Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me. Rather this one.

R 4 Match 2 - Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. 3rd time voting for this. New radicals should be glad they got this far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,478 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Oh, big guns coming out now!

Love Will Tear Us Apart - I nominated it and I love it

You Get What You Give - I won't argue it's better than Wicked Game, I just prefer it. A lot of that might be timing, I remember it coming out and loving it, still do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,185 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

    R 4 Match 1
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart - This is a classic song. My vote.
    Vs
Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me - Nice song but outclassed by the above.

    R 4 Match 2
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. - Wonderfully dark and haunting. My vote.
    Vs
The New Radicals - You Get What You Give - Love this song but the above just shades it. It was a tight decision!

Love Will Tear Us Apart - better song.

Wicked Game - love them both, but this is the better.

    Love Will Tear Us Apart.

    Wicked Game.

Both class songs that are better than the opposition. I do like Kiss Me, but I'm only now realising that You Get What You Give is actually quite an obnoxious song: great music and catchy chorus, but the message behind the lyrics coupled with the video is basically "hey young people, it's ok to be an antisocial dickhead as long as you're not rich". This contest has made it go down in my estimation. :p

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

    Match 1

Love Will Tear Us Apart - absolute classic, and potentially an overall winner

    Match 2

Wicked Game - just a far better song

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

Kiss me is an easy call. Need to give the others a re-listen.

Tactically, I feel I should I vote against Wicked Game, because I don't particularly like it and it has a very good chance of winning overall, but the other song is dog****, so Chris Isaak it is :P

joy division - love will tare us apart
    chris issac - wicked game

great songs that outshine their competition.

Joy Division and Cris Isaak advance

Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart 7 vs 3 Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game. 7 2 The New Radicals - You Get What You Give

    R 4 Match 3

The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love

    Vs

Again I have to go with my nominations, so

    Match 3

    Ever Fallen in Love

    Match 4

    99 Luftballons

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,794 ✭✭✭Squall Leonhart

    Peter Sarstedt and Chumbawamba

Voting for Nena and her 99 luftballoons . loved it as a kid and have yet to outgrow it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

Sastedt, though I won't be devastated if the other gets through.

Nena, because I like it and because tubthumping is awful

    R 4 Match 3
The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love – Finally, I get to vote on this one! Great punk pop. My vote.
    Vs
Peter Sarsted - Where do you go to, my lovely – Dreary love song.

    R 4 Match 4
Nena - 99 luftballons. – Not mad about this - it’s just alright. I prefer this German version to the English language version. But tactical voting in this case so… My vote.
    Vs
Chumbawamba – Tubthumping- I got fed up with this song a long time ago. It was only marginally better than their follow-up hit Insomnia.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Where Do You Go To, I'm still not sure if I even like it, but it coming up against competition that I definitely dislike so, it keeps getting my vote.

99 Luftbalons, again, not particularly passionate here, but I think it's the better of the two.

R 4 Match 3 - Peter Sarsted - Where do you go to, my lovely

    R 4 Match 4 - Nena - 99 luftballons.

    Easy decision x 2

#3 - Ever Fallen In Love

    #4 - 99 Luftballons

Not sure either of these will be our winner but they're the better of what's on offer here.

    Ever fallen in love

    Tubthumping

    I prefer both
