Haven't counted yet, but Baker Street if it still matters

Okay, have just woken up, so was catching up on the thread. Seems reason is essential, so:
    Sax, obviously.
Gerry Rafferty is hugely underrated in general; maybe the win would encourage people to check out his other stuff.
The lyrics in this are better.

Don't fear the reaper is still great though.

    Final

Gerry Raferty - Baker Street iconic, because of that sax solo. Omackerals clip from the Simpsons depicts just how versatile it is and why everyone recognizes those notes. Thing is, is that why its famous, more so than the entire song?

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper This song is a home cooked roast chicken dinner after a steaming shower at the end of a long week. It just feels good. It's a comfort blanket of a song which allows you to pull it around your ears and forget about your troubles for a few minutes. Although, that seems to be a young Jose Mourinho in the screen grab from the video.

    Hmmm.........

    For me,..........Blue Oyster Cult.......just.
    (winner winner, chicken dinner)

What a way to describe a song. Love it!

    I second that motion!!

For the final I will vote for Don't Fear The Reaper, because I liked teh cover version that Apollo 440 did in the 90's. Lame reason, I know. . .:D

Depends on your definition of OHW. If your definition is no more than one Top 40 hit in the UK and the US, than at least three of the above are not OHWs. They are highlighted. My favourite song by Journey, for example, is Who's Crying Now which was a hit for them in the US and gets plenty of airplay. The Buzzcocks had a number of Top 40 hits in the UK, for example.

I would have nominated Your Woman if I didn't think it had already been nominated. :(

I did think of You're Gorgeous, Ring My Bell, Stay, Je T'aime... and Everybody's Free To wear Sunscreen after the event, would have been happy to see any of those submitted. And Sex on the Beach too!

A few more that may have qualified:
Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever (still gets quite a bit of radio play)

Fiona Apple - Criminal (she has a lot of great songs but this was her only hit in the US)

Falco - Rock Me Amadeus (awesome guilty pleasure)

Tweet - Oops, Oh My (because two songs about masturbation just wasn't enough!)

And just for lolz: Doop - Doop. :D

Can You Dig It, You and Me Song and An Honest Mistake are great shouts, had forgotten about them.

Very surprised nobody went for My Sharona or Don't Stop Believing (though I hate the latter so that's a good thing!)

I'm glad Journey didnt make the cut as it might have walked it and I'd have another reason to hate it, it's just soooooo overplayed.

Journey have had a number of hits, particularly in the US. I can't stand Don't Stop Believing, but I really like Who's Crying Now. Another song I have heard played on Radio Nova, in particular, is Anyway You Want It. They were around before and after singer Steve Perry, but it was mainly during his tenure that they had hit singles.

As I say, I would not be in a position to host such an exercise. My suggestion for what it's worth is an act who only had one Top 40 hit in the UK OR one Top 50 hit in the US. Remember it's a big deal to reach the "Hot 100" in the States. So in my scenario, they could be a OHW in either country.

I'd never heard this, and I loved Apollo 440 back in the day. Just listened now and, well, it's terrible... but I love it :)

Edit, I thought it had finished but it's still going. It's getting better and better!

I love You're Gorgeous. I had it on single and the second song was another slightly tweaked version called You're Gorgeous Too. Could never find it on youtube but just found it there!! I think it's such a nice version, makes you appreciate the original...

I considered My Sharona, but I had too many others ahead of it. Journey had a heap of hits in the US so they wouldn't have qualified.

I had thought of this after we started and in hindsight might have been a better idea. Finding a genuine ohw in both countries is difficult, in either country would have been much easier.

If it had been based on only one hit in the Top 40, Cutting Crew and A Flock of Seagulls would not have been eligible! Incidentally, I always associated Cutting Crew with two songs anyway, the other being Been In Love Before. Also, but irrelevant, A Flock of Seagulls' I Ran was a big hit in the US, but only got to #43 in the UK. Wishing (If I had a Photograph of You) was their biggest UK hit, reaching #10, and does get a bit of airplay.

I Ran was a song I didn't know before the contest - I only knew Flock of Seagulls as a haircut! :p That and Crash by the Primitives were my favourite "discoveries" from this thread. :)

good point. In some cases I had to google artists and make sure that they met the criteria that Kolido set. One of the songs that came to my head was Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance but I instinctively new that it was borderline - and it was, she had 4 or 5 top hits.
As for A Flock of Seagulls, both great songs. I just checked the PM I sent to Kolido and I mentioned both songs and that I would be ok with either of them. I guess since LeVar Burton also nominated I ran it made more sense to have only one song from them.

One of the rules for this thread was that the artist is particularly associated with one song!

Anyone wanna admit to their noms? These were mine. I couldn't think of a sixth in time once the number was increased from five:

Marc Cohn - Walking in Memphis
    Scorpions - Wind of Change
The Bluebells - Young at Heart
The J. Geils Band - Centerfold
Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway

The find of the competition for me was The Safety Dance. Of course I'd heard of it before, but I'd never given it much attention. I now think it's brilliant, the video is a hoot, and I've the hots for the lead singer, who even still continues to look pretty good - yes, I Googled.
