Did Westlife cover it? I Would have said it was a Westlife song, but either way it's not good..

I just listened to it now! It's bad and very like them. Whoever voted that should be ashamed.

    Doesn't Necro like Westlife?? :D

Ever Fallen in Love. Absolute classic punk track, hard to figure out why they didn't have a load more hits after this one.

    Match 14

    No opinion

They did have a number of other hits. Five other songs reached the Top 40, but only one - Promises - reached the Top 20, so they qualify for this list.
Just for your information, they were:
    Promises - 20
    What Do I Get - 37
    Love You More - 34
    Everybody's Happy Nowadays - 29
Harmony in My Head - 32.
Most of those songs, including some in the bottom 10, got at least one airing on Top of the Pops, the premier charts programme at the time!

1982 Talk Talk (Reissue) Chart 23

I had a look at the original post and I see no sign of the stipulation for no more than 3 hits. I thought a One Hit Wonder is where an act has only one hit in a particular country, e.g. U.K. or U.S.A.

Nomination thread says that no definitive definition of a One Hit Wonder can be found.

One top 40 (or top 75) hit and nothing more is it.

All or Nothing. I got to second base with a girl while that was on.

Would You? For the outrageous saxophone part and the general horniness of it.

Wind of change. That whistle gets me in the feels Everytime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,942 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Buzzcocks - a classic punk song!

Would you? - theme tune to G-string Divas, enough said.

The Buzzcocks and Touch and Go move on.

The Buzzcocks - Ever Fallen in Love 6

Unkle Kracker as it is unashamedly my go to Karaoke Song.

Suzanne Vega Luka as its a nice song if I remember rightly. Did she not sing Tom's Diner too which is a very well known song?

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

2-4-6-8 because I nominated it and it's catchy.

I also nominated Young at Heart, but I think I actually prefer Luka now that I think of it so will go with that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Unkle Kracker because it made me feel warm

Young At Heart for that Bluegrass/Ska vibe

#15 - Not keen on either of those tbh. Pass.

#16 - I don't think I know Young at Hea...oh God, THAT's what it is? A million votes for Luka, please.

    EDIT: ooh, sorry qb. :(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭Tammy!

2-4-6-8 cause it's catchy and because I never liked that Follow me song.

I like both of Luka and Young at Heart. Going for Young at Heart though because i did Ip Dip on it.

Follow Me by Uncle Kracker, for that smooth twangy acoustic guitar intro, deadly!

Luka by Suzanne Vega. Reminds me of being very young. Anytime I hear the name Luka, which isn't as rare you might think, I think of the song

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,429 ✭✭✭Sheridan81

    Uncle Kracker-Follow Me

The other song is no good.

    Suzanne Vega-Luka

The fiddle(?) in the other song is annoying.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

    EDIT: ooh, sorry qb. :(

You're alright Homer. If you've seen my Walrus entries, I'm not exactly on the pulse of the musical taste of most people. Nearly all those that I voted for have been voted off, so, even at this early stage I'm used to it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Both of these matches were surprisingly tough...

    Match 15
2-4-6-8 Motorway because it holds slightly more memories for me than Follow Me, but only by a smidge

    Match 16
Genuinely could've gone either way on this one, but gonna go Luka for that haunting chorus.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,216 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Uncle Kracker.

Cos everything is gonna be alright.

No opinion on second match tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,975 ✭✭✭✭Mam of 4

    2-4-6-8 Motorway , class tune QB !!

    Luka , great song , imo .

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 6,309 Mod ✭✭✭✭mzungu

My votes go to Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway as Uncle Cracker would not be my cuppa. In the other I will go with Suzanne Vega - Luka.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,336 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

    Match 15

2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway, as previously mentioned it's a great catchy somg

    Match 16

Young at Heart, only because I dislike the other song so much

Damn I’m late to the party.

Tom Robinson band. Really great tune

Suzanne Vega - I could sing Luka all day everyday

Skynard and Scorpions out in round one.

I've just joined this thread but definitely a need for more cheesy songs.

Saturday Night by Whitfield has to be included.

How far are we through, just had a quick scan and haven't spotted any of my OHWs, which worries me they are going to be matched against each other :(

Was in Arnotts last night and in the middle of all the Christmas music that came on. It was very strange.

128 songs, so 64 first round match-ups. Plenty to go yet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,942 ✭✭✭✭ShaneU

Match 15 - Follow me, very catchy

Match 16 - Suzanne Vega, although Tom's Diner is her best song surely, ahead of its time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,034 ✭✭✭Ficheall

I'm a big Suzanne Vega fan, but surely not a OHW? Many of her other songs are better than either Luka or Tom's Diner.

Tom's Diner, incidentally, I believe, was the song used to provide the tuning for the MP3 format.

    My votes:
    R1 Match 15
Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway

    R1 Match 16
    Suzanne Vega - Luca

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

    Match 15
Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway another from my era, a 2000 song is never going to beat it IMO

    Match 16

Suzanne Vega - Luka hard choice, both my era but Luka gets it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,422 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

Tom Robinson and Suzanne Vega motor on.

    Tom Robinson Band - 2‐4‐6‐8 Motorway 6
    Vs
Unkle Kracker - Follow Me 5

The Bluebells - Young at Heart 2
    Vs
    Suzanne Vega - Luka 6

    Peaked US 1/UK 2

    Yes, Chesney!
Quintessential one hit wonder. Saw him live years after and he was so sound too, he knows and embraces the fact that everyone only knows one song :p

Midnight Oil, because the time has come to say fair's fair

Chesney Hawkes ftw, cos he wrote that song about me ya know :P
Wonder if the lyrics should be changed to 'I am a One Hit Wonder, you can't take that away from me'

Not fussed on second one if I'm honest.

Here you go way to fasssssssst. You don’t slow down you’re gonna crassssssh. Love it!

Beds are burning is some tune too. My daughter and I sing it when drunk. Glad someone put it in.

    Crash
    Beds are burning

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

    Match 17
Crash because its an absolute tune, has made its way on to many a playlist of mine, and is part of one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever... Dumb & Dumber

    Match 18
Informer because licky boom boom now and other such nonsense lyrics. When 'Informer' is the only word in a song that anyone knows, but everyone sings along anyway is how you know its an absolute hit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,185 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

    R1 Match 17

Chesney Hawkes - One and Only

    VS

    The Primitives – Crash

Now there's a proper one hit wonder: One and Only, because this really was his only hit, unlike the rules that apply here. While I like that song, I have to give my vote to: Crash by The Primitives.

    R1 Match 18

    Snow - Informer

    VS

Midnight Oil - Beds Are Burning. My vote goes to: Beds Are Burning.

The One And Only Chesney Hawkes. Gotta be a top contender for overall winner because, while it might not be the best song among the 128, it is bloody good and it's quintessential one hit wonder.

The other one I have no opinion on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

Crash because that Chesney Hawkes abomination is the worst song ever made. Thankfully it was his one and only ''hit''.

    Informer
on the other one. It's risque.
