Match 36 Always look on the bright side, a valuable lesson in astromomy on where someone should observe the moon

Match 37 99 luftballons, are great song to help one learn the german language

Match 38 Mad world, a song I listen to when I need cheering up

Mambo No. 5 , catchy upbeat , makes me smile ,

Rush Hour , ooh great song ,

99 Red Balloons , always makes me think of the Wall coming down ,

The Final Countdown , pure classic :D

    Europe - The Final Countdown
Damn you Kol, I nominated Mad World but the Final Countdown is a stone cold classic!

Haha...that was my nomination actually, sorry EN :D

Mambo No. 5 because it's catchy and fun to sing along to. Also, the trumpet!!!

Always Look On The Bright Side of Life because Monty Python...

99 Luftballons because Ich liebe es und es ist reiner Käse (I love it and its pure cheese).

Mad World because as much as I love Tears For Fears, there's no denying Gary Jules knocked it out of the park with this cover.

    Match 35

    No opinion

    Match 36

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life, because we are all individuals.

    Match 37

99 Luftballons. Tough one this, most of the time of have gone for Leonard Cohen, but I have to pick the one I nominated. A great song, and the German version is so much better than the English one.

    Match 34

Mad World. A great version of a song where I really didn't like the original.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 16,287 Mod ✭✭✭✭quickbeam

Mark Cohn. Great song. I nominated it.

Eric Idle. Catchy and great film.

    Leonard Cohen. He’s brilliant.

Gary Jules. Great cover. Great film.

The Final Countdown by Europe does fulfil the rules for this thread's definition, i.e. no more than 3 Top 20 hits and the act being particularly associated with one song. However, I would not call it "a quintessential OHW", as they did have other hits.
Rock The Night: UK - 12, US -30
Carrie: UK - 22, US - 3 - That was my favourite song by them!
    Superstitious: UK -34, US - 31
    I'll Cry for You: UK - 28

    R1 Match 36
Eric Idle - Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life
    VS
Jane Weidlin - Rush Hour - This gets my vote.

I'm not too bothered about voting for the others, including Leonard Cohen's version of his own song, although I do like some of his songs!

...does fulfil the rules for this thread's definition

OK, we get it. You don't like the rules. They're set now though, and it's just a bit of fun on the internet. Maybe let it go now...?

I'm going to vote Europe as I nominated them and I was a big fan back in the day. I know quite a few of there early songs, still listen to the final countdown album to this day. In general they are mostly known for that one song though.

Carrie is a great love song. It has got quite a bit of airplay over the years. It was their biggest hit in the US. Rock the Night is a straight rocker. I cannot send links at the moment.

#39 Crush, for the nice nostalgia buzz it gives me.

#40 Star Trekkin', because the Afroman one gets boring after the first verse.

#41 Don't Fear the Reaper is the better tune

#42 Don't know either of these so abstain

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,896 ✭✭✭✭Spook_ie

I just like it and that's all it needs.

    Mambo No.5

    Give a little whistle and

    Vote Eric Idle

Just haunting when you listen to the words, "It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city"

    Vote 99 Luftballons

Would Europe have got anywhere if Trump was president at the time Or was it a prophecy about Brexit, other than that a great song and yes

    Vote Europe

    Sunchyme
    Don’t fear the reaper
    Star trekking

I need to listen to the other two as I can’t recall them.

synchme - my preference of the two.
dont fear the reaper - my preference of the two
sex and candy - sure, why not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Sunchyme - its the one I'm more attached to. Both good songs though.

Because I Got High because I got high, because I got high, because I got high... badadadadadada

Don't Fear The Reaper - it's clearly the more superior song, but this was a tough one because I also love Closing Time.

Sex and Candy - it's a classic and a great song.

    Dario G - Sunchyme 5 Vs 1 Jennifer Paige - Crush

Had a listen while I waited 24 fúcking minutes for the DART (thanks signal failure!) Neither blew me away on first listen but Sex and Candy is the one I'd be more likely to listen to again, so I'll vote for that.

Only voting for 2 at the moment

Because I got high, how can any song about getting high, allegedly written when high not get to be voted for

Don't fear the reaper just a great play

#43 Addictive, absolute CHOOON. Though I do like Kiss Me too.

#44 Brimful of Asha, because I hate Blue with a passion.

    #45 I Touch Myself

#46 Oh Yeah, because OOOOOHHHH YYYEEEEAAAAHHHH

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Kiss Me - definitely one I had considered for nomination myself. Great song.

Blue (Da Ba Dee) - this was a tough decision, both songs are equally catchy, but Blue is just that slightly bit better.

I Touch Myself - a classic. Greatest song about masturbation ever written.

Tubthumping because I get knocked down but I get up again. Oh Yeah is great, but just a bit too repetitive, works better when used in short bursts á la Ferris Bueller...

Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me

Only choosing this as I hadn’t heard of the other and on one listen I don’t like it.

    Eiffel 65 - Blue

I like brimful of asha too. But blue always makes me smile.

    Divinyls - I Touch Myself
    Like this one

    Chumbawamba - Tubthumping

This is the tune that should win the entire competition!

    Match 44

Brimful Of Asha - protest vote against blue

    Truth Hurts - Addictive
    VS
Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me – Gets my vote.

    R1 Match 44
Cornershop - Brimful Of Asha – much preferred the original mix!
    VS
Eiffel 65 – Blue – Gets my vote.

    R1 Match 46
    Chumbawamba - Tubthumping
    VS
    Yello - oh yeah
    Released 1985
    Peaked US 51/UK NA
In relation to Yello, I had a look at the rules for what qualifies for this list.
The act must not have had no more than 3 top 20 singles in the UK or US charts (mainstream charts).
The act must be primarily known for the song entered.

Does the song nominated not have to have been in the Top 20 itself in this context? Also, surely The Race, which reached No. 7 in the UK, would be the song particularly associated with them? Sorry for being pedantic!

Match 43 - Sixpence None The Richer, not great, but the other song is terrible.

Match 44 - Brimful of Asha, just a great song, not as novelty as blue.

Match 45 - Abstain, can't in good conscience vote for either!

Match 46 - Chumbawumba, could listen to it more and not mind, but the Yello song is a classic as well, thanks Ferris Bueller!

Can see where you're coming from, but oddly even though it never charted here I have vague memories of it, maybe it was a disco plays thing rather than radio air plays.

Or more likely I heard this version

This competition lost all credibility when deep Blue somethings piece of dirt went through at the expense of Together in electric dreams. It just shows the calibre of the individuals voting with the mundane reason of never heard of the other song so i'm voting for the one i know. Some crock of ****e will win this.
