    Looking for feedback from anyone who has done the veterinary nursing course

    Hi there.


    The veterinary nursing course is quite good. A student will have to do two six week work placements a year of a minimum of 30hrs a week over the three years. The course is a mix of practical, lectures, assignments and exams.


    Upon passing all required modules, you can then enter in to the register of veterinary nurses in either the VCI Ireland or RCVS UK. You then have the option of doing an add on year upon completetion of the level 7 degree in lyit to get an honours level 8 degree or can do a bioveterinary level 8 in athlone IT.


    It is a good course if you have an interest in helping animals and enjoy working with them. Many students have obtained employed in veterinary practice or other veterinary related fields such as pet insurance or being a rep for a company as an example.


    I am currently doing the add on level 8 year in lyit which is an honours degree in emergency and critical care nursing. There is also the option of doing a level 8 add on year in lyit that focuses on animal welfare but that course only runs if enough applicants apply for it.


    The level 7 course can be demanding and you will have to work for it, but in the end it equips one with the necessary skills to be a good vet nurse. The various work placements allow one to obtain and sharpen all clinical skills related to vet nursing such as taking blood samples, taking xrays, dental cleaning, giving owners advice, anaesthesia monitoring etc.
