I have vodafone SIRO in the house and I am using the router they supplied. It doesn't seem to have good reach into some parts of the house.

So I am looking at the new Google Nest Wifi Mesh Router (https://store.google.com/gb/product/nest_wifi)

Will this work if I remove the router from vodafone and just plug the cable into this Nest one?

    Thanks

It needs to support VLAN tagging on WAN. The older Google mesh router did not. If this one doesn't it won't work with SIRO.

you should be able to put the nest into a wifi only mode, and attach it via a lan port to the vodafone router, and just turn off the wifi on the
    vf router.

If it's the same as google wifi it needs to do the routing or you can't use it for a mesh network.
The only point in getting something like this is for a mesh network, otherwise a regular wifi access point would do the job just fine.

That means the OP can only use one Google device and loses out on the mesh features.

Something like the TP-Link mesh devices would be more suitable for this.

So sounds like nest wifi might be either overkill or not going to work.

I really just need to strengthen the wifi signal to the rear of my house, the device I need to connect is outside and about 15 meters from the current router but there are few walls in the way.

I did previously try the TP Link devices that run the connectivity over the power cables and acted as wifi with the same name but it didnt work reliably.

    Is it a range extender I need? e.g. TP Link RE205 ?

Depends how fast you need the connection to be.
A range extender can probably do the job but the speed will be much slower than connecting to the router directly.
If possible it's best to run a cable from the router to an access point closer to the outside area you want to cover.

Maybe try the extender and buy from amazon so it's easy to send back if you are not happy.

It needs to support VLAN tagging on WAN. The older Google mesh router did not. If this one doesn't it won't work with SIRO.

I use a cheap managed switch to untag the traffic to be able to connect directly to the Google WiFi primary access point.

If you want a mesh system both the TP-Link Deco and Netgear Orbi should do what you want, although you'll lose the phone service on SIRO if you replace the router. I've no experience using extenders.

Alternatively do as tuxy said and use an Ethernet cable to connect an access point closer to where you need the WiFi.

    ok thanks for the tips.
I dont have phone with SIRO so no issue there.

Speed doesnt need to be very high on the extender. 20MB up and down is fine so I will probably try a wifi extender and see...

That's fine if you already own the device. Why would you bother buying one knowing it needs such a workaround.

Great write up I wish I had that when I was trying to get it setup.

I was using VM in bridge mode and Google Wifi before switching to Siro. Bought the switch to eliminate the router and be able to connect directly to the OTN.

I have Vodafone/SIRO with the gigabox router. Do I still need the managed switch solution to get the most out of my nest wifi? I do not have phone.

If you want to eliminate the Vodafone router from your setup you will need a managed switch to connect the Nest WiFi router directly to the Siro ONT.

Im using a Netgear 8 port switch but something like this will also work.

Another poster here did an excellent write up on how to configure the switch.

Why do so many of these mesh networking devices not support VLAN tagging?
    It's a fairly standard feature.

Thanks John, does the switch offer any advantages over the router? ie having the switch instead of the router connecting to the Nest WiFi

The nest can act as a router.
I believe you need the managed switch to VLAN tag the packets as this feature is missing from the nest.

Anyone know if you can (like you can with Virgin) switch off their router so the two signals (nest and Vodafone) don't bounce off each other?
