key stuck in petrol cap

This morning I filled up, key went in grand (to the fuel cap) but took an age to get out.
Was forcing it a bit, eventually it came out and noticed ice around the key and lock. Never happened to me before.

When I went to pay the till girl told me it happened to another biker a few mins ago, he got some hot water from the coffee machine and tricked it down (good tip/bad tip) Would the water stay and freeze again?
Anyway just thought I'd share. See what others do? I'll keep a small can of WD40 in the back box but say if you didn't have that, any alternative hacks out there?

It probably froze in the first place because of moisture in it so I wouldn't pour water into it.
Stick with your wd40.

I did breathe on it heavily, does count?

Wd40 should keep it in good enough condition that it doesn't happen again for a while.

wd40 may be an instant fix but dirt will stick to it and clog up the lock, get some graphite powder

You could use a pencil as said above, break it open and crush up the inside bit that writes

This happened to me many moons ago, ended up getting a paper coffee cup, pissing into it (was night time luckily) & pouring some of it over the lock. It worked but wasn't my most pleasant moment. A smear of vaseline around the petrol cap & into the lock itself works wonders & isn't a dirt or grit magnet like WD40.
