New Silent PC - Office/Web Dev

Hi Guys, As you can see from my recent thread I am going to upgrade my old PC which I built from a recommendation here 7 years ago. The main requirements are for it to be quiet. I will also need to connect a laptop also (so triple monitor setup would be nice if possible). Small form factor would be good as the home office…

Hi Guys,
As you can see from my recent thread I am going to upgrade my old PC which I built from a recommendation here 7 years ago.

The main requirements are for it to be quiet. I will also need to connect a laptop also (so triple monitor setup would be nice if possible). Small form factor would be good as the home office is small.

1. What is your budget? €1000

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Internet (lots of tabs and apps open), Web Dev, Office Work.

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? No, I have 2 x Dell U2717D

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 2560 x 1440 (Not Upgrading)

6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Need a wireless card, card reader. I already have keyboard/mouse and speakers.

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

8. How can you pay? Any Method

9. When are you purchasing? ASAP

Hiya,

For €1000, you'll get a lot. I've built the below in reference to your use of the computer (multitasking) and it being silent.

Bare in mind, the build would be a lot cheaper if you didn't have the noise requirement, but nonetheless it is still well underbudget.

I did not include windows 10, just use it unactivated, its only a watermark down the bottom right of your desktop.

For the card reader, a plug in usb one will be your best bet:

The two fans I linked are to replace the case fans (one intake, one exhaust). They are incredibly silent.

For the CPU cooler, the stock AMD one is a bit more louder (40dBA vs 25dBA). If you want to remove it go ahead, it is overkill but it is also very silent.

The monitors that I currently have only have HDMI (MHL), DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort connections. I don't see any DP or MDP ports on that motherboard which I'd need for the monitors or when I connect my work laptop. Will I need a different motherboard?

I have a GT1030 Graphics Card in the build, it has HDMI and Displayport out.

If you feel your current case is decent then by all means hold onto it

Thanks, I missed the graphics card. I'm going to sell my current PC as it is so won't take the case.

I have the fans, and you cannot hear them at all, the psu and cpu cooler also have low decibels even at max rpm but I've never used them before so cannot 100% vouch for them being true to their word.
Then again beQuiet products are fantastic and I've had other variants that are very quiet.

If you want to go for a more expensive case, take a look at the beQuiet Silent Base 801. It has the fans I suggested in the build so your saving on those already.

I also noticed you want a 3 display setup, in that case you'll need a different video card as the one listed only outputs 2 signals.

Thanks for the updated list, I appreciate it. The new case looks great and the reviews on it from Amazon.com and .co.uk are really good.

My wife does video editing, sometimes up to 4k and she has now decided to use this machine also. With that being said, would you add more RAM, change the graphics card? She uses Camtasia and the Adobe Suite for her work.

4k video editing would be beyond that GPU.

Consider upgrading to a Ryzen 7 2700 CPU and at a minimum an RX580 8gb GPU, 16gb ram minimum but 32gb ideally.

These changes will bring your spend to around £800/£850 mark.

Edit: That GPU will not be silent when you're crunching 4k video, but then, none will. At idle it should be silent.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Did a bit of research and changed a few bits according to your feedback. I also edited the WiFi adaptor as I have Siro 1GB broadband.

Would I need to increase the PSU?

How does the following look with regards to being a quiet build with occasional 4k video editing (which as you mentioned won't be quite during this)

I'd avoid that graphics card, its pure trouble. That is based on personal experience and the reviews under it. Get the sapphire pulse instead. Fantastic card.

Yeah that'll work too. The nitro has dual bios, one of those is quiet mode.

How does this new black Friday deal on Amazon for the Sabrent Rocket compare to the Adata XPG SX8200? I can't find a direct comparison online. The one I can see is for the next model up I think.

Cracker deal, great SSD also.

Dont get the 512GB or 256GB versions though, lots of problems. The 1TB though is a great SSD.

Thanks. Unfortunately they don't deliver direct to Ireland on this one. I have a vat no and can save the vat if it's delivered to Ireland but not when it's delivered to PW or PM so by the time I factor delivery in, roughly the same price as the SX8200 :-(

At least it will beneficial to others.

Not at all, it won't be seen. Almost everything sorted now. A few more bits left and hopefully they will drop over the next few days.

SweetCaliber, the 130w cannot be delivered to Ireland. I could use PW but would the 220w model be a better buy and perform better?

The 220w is overkill, you could go for the 120w, no point in spending extra money when not needed
