Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

If you register for Lenovo news letter you get 10% off, code comes by email. If you have a Unidays account you can get an additional discount up to 20% - I just purchased the Lenovo S540 15" last week, €1030 on their website, got it for €840 after the discounts

Posted this in the main Amazon bargains thread, rather than here :o
I bought the Asus Zenbook from Currys and it was delivered yesterday. I only had it on for a little while yesterday, but first impressions for anybody who is thinking of buying it:
    - Build quality is absolutely top drawer. I knew it would be good, but was surprised by how good it is
    - Lovely screen
    - Speakers are pretty decent for laptop speakers, but tinny when turned up load
    - Keyboard is lovely to type on
    - Being able to use the trackpad as a numeric pad is really handy. If you press the top right corner of the trackpad, it lights up a display to show the numeric pad
    - The backlight didn't work on the keyboard initially, but as Windows was cycling threw downloading and installing updates, one of them must have been the drivers for it, as it began working after a restart
    - I can't comment on performance yet as I only had it on for a short time and it was installing so many updates that it was running a bit slow. Once I have all updates installed over the next few days, I will get more of an idea of it
    - Overall, very happy so far

Would you recommend it? I’ve had a look around and it seems to be the best mid range one when it comes to getting your bang for buck.

tbh the littlewoods one with the more powerful graphics card for 999 posted in the OP post is better. the 1660ti is a good step up from the 1650 card.

games will run better as the gpu is the limiting factor more so than the gpu for this level of cpu + gpu combinations. although it does have a bigger ssd drive but the littlewoods one does have a boot ssd and a hdd so enough space for games.

also a spanish keyboard layout would be very difficult to sell on in Ireland if you ever wanted to do so.

Can someone recommend a decent laptop I can buy my boyfriend for Christmas, it needs to be able to run Ableton/Photoshop etc somewhat seamlessly.

Would I get something like it for around €400?

no, not with Ableton, you really need an interated ssd or a hdd with at least 5400 rpm to run ableton these days or any days for the last decade or it will freeze quite frequently

Amazon warehouse are doing 20% of higher end laptops, good few macbook pros there which works out a saving of approx £400 (kicks in at checkout), pretty good

German retailer prices are much more competitive than here .

Look at these prices from Alternate.de ,shipping is 18.45 euro extra

    https://www.alternate.de/HP/15-db1224ng-Notebook/html/product/1556331

    249 euro

    yep.

the 1660ti machine will still run games a lot better.

you can see from here that it's 50 to 60% more powerful compared to the 1650 card.

    https://www.notebookcheck.net/GeForce-GTX-1650-Laptop-vs-GeForce-GTX-1660-Ti-Laptop_9828_9641.247598.0.html

as I said, games performance is way more gpu-bound than cpu, especially wrt lower-end cards like the 1650 and low to mid cards like the 1660ti

the extra ram won't change much except for a very small % of games.

8gb cpu ram + 6gb gpu ram (1660ti) is plenty.

better off getting something with a 4-core cpu (amd ryzen 5 or intel i5)

those are 2-core cpus. (amd ryzen 3)

16gb ram also recommended for video editing.

Currys are advertising 10% off today only but all the prices are the same as yesterday. The main page mentions codes but I don't see any codes anywhere.
Anyone know if there are extra discounts?

Kompletts black friday is pretty disappointing.
I've reserved a lenovo s340 in Argos but if Currys did an extra 10% I'd probably get the acer aspire 5.

Just realised the Currys 10% is only on a few laptops & they aren't advertised as a code. It's in the offers section at the bottom of the ad page.

Lenovo s340 14" will be the same price as the 15" in Argos.

I got the lenova s340 8gb in argos last night, same colour and model was over 500 in curry's. The advisor in curry's told me I would be made not to go for the 8gb over the 4gb considering only 100€ in the difference.

Fingers crossed the young whipper snapper will be happy with his Xmas present from the big man.

Hi folks, thanks for the knowledge and advice given here so far. I’m looking for a laptop for my lad who is in first year at school. He does his gaming on Xbox so not concerned about gaming. Laptop will mostly be used for school work. Even though all there school work is stored in google cloud, I don’t want to be restricted to a chromebook. ( I think)

He doesn’t want a 15.6 screen, any comment in this machine in Curry’s?

Or this one: Id have no problem upgrading the RAM on it myself, is 128GB drive too small?

The second one is ok with a ram upgrade. Just avoid the AMD A CPU in the first one. The Ryzen is much better

128gb enough in today's streaming and cloud world. It's media files and large game files that take up space.

But the ssd would also be easily upgraded so no worries if it becomes available issue

Probably better to opt out of Windows s if it comes with that option set initially also

Maybe not the thread but how do I know which CPU is faster?

    Let's say i5 6th Gen v i3 7th gen??

And is there much difference in each of the processors for each gen?

And how do I know which CPUs are out of date? For example would i5 4th Gen be fast for browsing, photos, excel, word etc.

    Don't think you'll find a better deal on a 15.6" laptop.

If you Google the processors including model no then there's plenty of comparison websites that show how they compare, can be hard to tell what to really look at though.
I would think an older i5 would still perform better than a newer i3. Best value for money would be the ryzen 5 processor which seems to sell at i3 prices.

Google " CPU code passmark" and check the score. Eg "i5 8250u passmark"

You want over 3000 ideally minimum for decent operation

The big change was that 8th gen i5 and i7 went to 4 core CPUs. Before that all were 2 core

I7 u chips are not worth the cost over i5 u chips in New laptops

Ryzen 3 and 5 are good too. They have better integrated graphics over the Intel's but are a little slower on the CPU side but not by much

If you are buying an old machine an ssd upgrade is essential and ideally min 6gb ram

Decent cpu but crap screen and battery life.

I'd go for the better deals with Ryzen 5 CPUs and full hd screens that are on now

From checking the CPU benchmark and comparing Argos's Ryzen 5 to Littlewood's i5 (https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/Intel-i5-8250U-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3500U/3042vs3421 ) The Ryzen 5 just comes out slightly in front. The battery life seems better on the Argos model too, any other advice or advice on which one to go for?

Google " CPU code passmark" and check the score. Eg "i5 8250u passmark"

You want over 3000 ideally minimum for decent operation

The big change was that 8th gen i5 and i7 went to 4 core CPUs. Before that all were 2 core

I7 u chips are not worth the cost over i5 u chips in New laptops

Ryzen 3 and 5 are good too. They have better integrated graphics over the Intel's but are a little slower on the CPU side but not by much

If you are buying an old machine an ssd upgrade is essential and ideally min 6gb ram

    Thanks,

So which of these would your recommend for general browsing, excel, word, odd youtube video for speed?

Considering I’m hoping it will last him through secondary school, maybe I’m as well just to go a little bit extra and get this one:

Seems to tick all the boxes?

Don't forget they have a code that gets a further 10% off that price.

Is there a code somewhere or is it already taken off? Can’t find one on the page?

Yeh I just ordered one for my Mam...€437.09 delivered. Great price. Ordered the 15inch one in Argos for my Dad as he wanted a full number pad. Should be a nice upgrade from their crappy Dell Celeron 4GB HDDs

the battery is probably pretty shot on the refurbished machine

the ryzen 3 is more powerful than the older i5.

screen is probably better on the newer machine

worth a ram upgrade to 8gb eventually on the newer laptop tho

would probably go with the newer one tbh even tho the G1 has a nice metal build

I posted in Laptops forum (shameless plug but there's some really good guys there giving amazing feedback for laptop requests), but posting here too. There's a lot of 'dud' sales about but there are genuine good deals around from shock horror Argos and Littlewoods

    Entry Level (browsing/streaming) 250-350 eur:
Laptops strictly for web browsing, online streaming and some light office work.
    Under 15 inch:

    Over 15 inch:
Currys has a decent entry machine Lenovo at 280
For 330 euro, you get an entry level better in all departments.
Hard to get better deals than the 2 above to be honest, the Argos one is a belter for the specs. There's online deals a bit cheaper but also requires PM/Parcel Wizard etc, and in the end you're saving about a tenner against the Argos model.

    Light, thin and sleek recommendations:

Mid Level (entry level gaming/light photo editing) 350-500 eur:
Entry level gaming such as Fortnite/Minecraft/Roblox, and light photo editing (ie not raw editing)
    Under 15 inch:
Less for gaming and more for productivity, the Acer Spin 3 at 370 pounds looks good for the price with touch adjustable screen.
    Over 15 inch:
Never thought I'd be recommending something from Argos, but 430 euro from a B&M store is excellent value.

    Light, thin and sleek recommendations:

    Mid-High level (good gaming perf/photo editing/video editing) 500-900 eur:
Good level quality and performance for modern games, heavy photo editing, light video editing, also good for VMs etc.
    Under 15 inch:

    Over 15 inch:
Just under 600 pound for a GTX 1650 laptop is decent enough. 120hz effectively useless modern games for a 1650 though.
500 pound on Currys UK ebay site or their own site for a laptop with RX 560. Its slower than 1650 but for 500 pound its good value. Delivery via PM/Parcelwizard. If interested keep an eye on this, eBay UK normally have a 10% off everything during Black week, so you could pick it up for 450 pound.
Acer AMD laptop for 470 after coupon applied. Not as sleek as the above AMD laptop but still does the job.

    Light, thin and sleek recommendations:
The Asus Zenbook has a slick finish, weighs just over 1kg at a decent 660 euro, would work nice as a productivity machine on the go

    High Level (top gaming perf/photo ed/video ed + more)1000 eur+:
No expenses spared. Fly through any tasks seamlessly.
    Under 15 inch:

    Over 15 inch:
Littlewoods of all places has a well specc'd Lenovo laptop with a top GPU for 1000 euro. Cheaper than the Lenovo website itself after discount!
    Light, thin and sleek recommendations:

    Netbooks:

Will post more as I find them but many of the sites price reductions are barely worthy of a 'sale' tag.

NOTE: Some laptops come with Windows 10 'S' installed by means as a 'security feature' that basically limits what you can install. To install regular programs a simple switch to the regular Windows 10 is required. No extra purchase is neccessary. The upgrade is free.

Thanks for the above - very handy!

Would you recommend the Asus Zen Book above or the Acer Nitro 5 (link below). Not sure which one is better for intermediate gaming and usual laptop activities - Cheers!

Writing this on my new Lenovo S340. Got the 15.6" version & have to say I'm pretty happy about it. The track pad is taking a bit of getting used to but other than that all good.
Went to Currys to take a look at the 14" version & I'm glad I got the bigger of the two. Its still smaller than my last laptop but the 14 just seemed too small.
Was fretting over which laptop to get all week & was drawn to some of the nicer displays in currys but couldn't justify the extra expense just for a nicer screen.

Thanks for all the advice here in the build up (especially glasso). Hope your all happy with your purchases whatever they might have been.
