    Ah ffs, can we focus on trying to solve the actual puzzle? Phil jumped the gun (again) but if we wait for total consensus we will never get anywhere.

    Brendan, your level 1 answer seems a bit convoluted but at least it is thinking things through. I'd say hold it in reserve as a guess for now until we have some alternatives. I'd say there is probably something in their based on Roman Numerals alright

    I'm getting hung up on the difference between "the sum" and "the value"...value has a different connotation than sum.

    Alternate theory.

    When the Romans (read, more than 1 Roman) counted the entirety of their whole army (1 army), their sum (referring to the number of romans counting) was greater than the value of this (referring to the 1 army they counted).

    I.e. the answer is 2.
