It was the 1997 launch that featured the spice girls when West became sponsor, no?

Why have those kind of things stopped? Where did the money ceme from and where did it go?

I know they've fallen out of fashion but it would have made sense for someone like RP to do something to attract attention this year since they've made such a big step forward.

I was going to reply that it was Jordan leaving and Red Bull becoming a serious team that meant the fun has left...

Where do you go to cotton eye joe! :pac: Sorry I couldn't resist.

Seriously though, I think in the 2000s with all the cost savings they cut that down. And then with the global downturn it was considered somewhat obscene to have these big money launches, especially when trying to draw in new fans and keep existing fans.

That's really when it turned into the "two drivers sitting on the wheels" kind of launch.

Although a complete **** show, this situation has done wonders for tracks that would have never had the chance to get a look-in for races. Great to see Portugal and "San Marino" back on a calendar. Pity there are no fans this time around, but at least it will go the help prove the point that other purpose built circuits do exist and are suitable for F1 racing as opposed to more "we can turn this city into a track" events.

True, Red Bull are the pretenders to Jordans rock n roll identity but are too corporate to pull it off.
Remember when Seb was winning they'd have music blaring from the garage as they stripped it down after a race.

The Imola weekend will be a 2 day event. No Friday practice apparently.

The irony being that the teams spend about twice as much per year now as they did back when they actually delivered a show for the money.

That race is also infamous for the Ide/Albers incident which cost the former his super licence and F1 career as a result, whether he was a long term prospect is unlikely.

    Horrific looking crash

I keep forgetting Montoya was with McLaren. He's always Williams in my mind.

What did Ide do specifically that warranted that punishment?

Causing the crash in the youtube video above, that could have ended very badly, and also a reputation for causing crashes.

Sure he wouldn't have been the first or last F1 driver to cause a crash!

Aye he was hopeless too, he's always up there in a list of worst F1 drivers ever!

He'd picked up a reputation for spins, crashes and being slow in the few races before Imola. He had no experience of the car or the tracks. He had mostly raced in Japan where he earned the results for his super license ( unlike some drivers who got it for driving an F1 car for 200km).

Talks of joining McLaren began after Magny Cours 2003 when he lost out in the pit stops to Ralf Schumacher who took the last Williams 1-2 I think at that race. The deal for 2005 became public knowledge before Christmas of 2003, in hindsight JPM appears to have regretted the move. The McLaren team and car weren’t to his liking.

    All in only 4 races.

Markus Winkelhock Was a better F1 driver than Ide, the man only raced once and lead it.

That's interesting, I wonder if it's related to noise restrictions. Will be interesting to see how well the track races. The racing was pretty processional there after 94, but with the removal of the final chicane and DRS it should be pretty good this time around.

It's a pity this season is when tracks I've been hoping to see on the calendar finally make it, would be great if it was a season when 3 teams were battling at the front. Still Imola should be a bit interesting with less practice running.

I'd say Lotterer had a better f1 career and he didn't complete a lap before his Caterham shat itself.

I'd forgotten Red Bull had Ferrari engines at one stage.

Will Mclaren ever be allowed to be competitive with a Mercedes engine?? It's something that's bothering me, no matter how good their aero is Mercedes surely won't allow them to get ahead. I think it's not good for F1 and I wish they stuck with Honda.
