Cowl on disused chimney

We had our fireplace removed and bricked up. It has a stove in it. I think it was bunged with earthwool insulation, so I think this would get mouldy if left damp. A generic cowl was fitted on the top. I think a disused chimney cowl/cap should be used because it will keep our a lot more rain. How much does this matter?

The cowl that was put on looks roughly like this:

The gap is pretty high so some rain would still get in. I might just replace it myself. Is that a bad idea?

There's a terracotta plug you can get in a builders providers that just sits in your chimney ,it closes the pot but is not air tight ,

Yeah that's the type I was thinking. Dunno how much it matters though?

Yea, I’d replace it with something like this that provides ventilation while also keeping out most of the rain
