The heater fan on my 2008 avensis is not working. Is it a big job/ expensive to fix it?

First thing I would do is check the level of the coolant in the car is correct to rule that out.

I read this as the fan isn’t putting any air out.

Does it make noise from around the glovebox when you turn the fan on?

Do you hear a relay click when you turn the fan on?

Does the AC button illuminate when you turn the fan on?

Have you ever changed the pollen filter?

Yes fan that puts air out

car was just serviced at weekend so coolant should be ok, but garage did say coolant was low at time of service

There used to be a noise like water running through a pipe when I started the car but this noise has stopped now

The AC hasn't worked in 18 months

    Pollen filter was never changed

So it blows air, just not warm air?

I’d thats the case, then post #2 is next step

Temporarily. Yes. Obviously if it freezes it won’t be great.

Next thing is what caused the coolant to go.

    Not necessarily, mechanic time though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Tomjim

went to the mechanic - he wasn't to interested in it said it was probably head gasket and it wasn't worth fixing

It seems that the coolant is leaking out over time ie when I fill with coolant in the evening , don't move car and when I check next morning, a lot of the coolant has disappeared.

This is hardly a head gasket or what would it be

Has to be going somewhere. Is there a wet patch under the car?

Stop talking rubbish. Read the posts. Car is filled with coolant, left overnight, and coolant is gone the next morning. Where do you think the coolant is going?

Down into the sump, it has to be.

Is the dipstick all scummy and frothy op?

Mechanic said it was low on coolant but said nothing about oil mixing with water.

In light of that, where do you think the coolant is going?

could be going into cylinders and getting blown out the exhaust too.

If it's leaking into the cylinders overnight to the extent that the coolant is gone, the engine won't turn over. It'll be hydrolocked. Or else in the sump, which we have already established it's not.

It might only be getting into the cylinders when the engine is runnning and the coolant is pressurised.

Read the thread. Filled up at night, gone in the morning.

Do you park in a garage OP? Can you leave paper underneath car to locate a leak?

Radiator could be rotten out of it. Or the hoses could be perished. Or the heater matrix could be rotten out of it too. Is there any puddles or damp or mould inside the car?
