those money plus player deals only exist in journo's heads

Man U lining up a bid for Maddison £45m plus Lingard they are having a laugh with that bid.

Leicester will want more than they got for Maguire and you can keep Lingard will be the reply.

They'd have to pay Leicester to take Lingard. Lucky he's only a young player though and has time on his hands ;)

No goal or assist in a year now.

Darren Randolph moving from Middlesbrough to West Ham for £4m, according to various sources.

That's disappointing, I think, from an Irish perspective; you want your 'keeper playing every week and there isn't a chance he is getting in to the team ahead of Fabianski.

Had a quick Google and 'Hammers News' was one of the first results to pop up. Posted a heap of Twitter responses from West Ham fans unhappy with the move. Not sure if it's a decent measure but the consensus was that Martin and an academy keeper should be able to cover the bench and that £4m could be better spent elsewhere.

If anyone is interested, the Athletic's David Ornstein is doing a daily transfer podcast for the month of January.

It's free on Spotify (and I presume other providers) on the Ornstein & Chapman show feed.

I haven't listened yet - I like Ornstein and Chapman and I don't doubt the bone fides of him and his sources but January is a bit of a graveyard and they basically say as much in the trailer! Most of it will be groundwork ahead of summer deals.

They also do a weekly pod on a variety of issues and that one is heavy on the transfers today - City not moving for Anyone, Liverpool not after Sancho, Chelsea going to take it easy despite lifting the ban, and that's about all.

    Exciting stuff.

the only team that seems to do good business in January is the world champions. VVD, Suarez, sold Couthinho, Torres (although this didn't feel good at the time he was past it) didn't they pick up Wjinaldum in January? Everyone else just seems to buy Sanchez

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,024 ✭✭✭✭Baggly

    Wijnaldum was a summer deal.

    You forgot Andy Carroll.

What's the story with Drinkwater ? From title winner to Chelsea. Then Burnley and now they don't want him!

Aubameyang was bought in a January transfer window, but yeah it’s rare enough that major deals are done this month.

His loan finished yesterday. He was linked with Villa but that was before the Heaton and Wesley injuries so their priorities have likely changed massively.

Heads not in it apparently, a very social footballer! Think he topped out with Leicester, the Chelsea move was a disaster and always going to be.

Chelsea said that if anybody takes him on loan they'll have to foot his £110,000 per week salary completely. Can't see many teams going for that being honest.

Especially since Burnley were only paying 50k per week, does nothing at Burnley and now Chelsea want someone to foot the wages. You'd be presuming there is no loan fee with those wages

I said at the time of Drinkwater's move to Chelsea that it looked like an appalling deal all around. Leicester were losing a key CM who was at home at the club, Chelsea were picking up an expensive, mediocre midfielder, and Drinkwater was shaping up to be the new Parker/Sidwell, who ticked homegrown boxes, saw limited football and would kill his international career.

It actually went even worse due to his issues off the field (drink driving and fighting outside nightclubs) than I had anticipated.

With his colossal wages alone, it's hard to imagine many teams taking a punt now given how badly the Burnley spell went.

He's essentially not played regular football since leaving Leicester - his first season at Chelsea had 22 appearances overall but how much of that was from the bench? I can barely remember him starting - in 2017 so for a side like Villa looking to beat the drop, can they even afford the passenger in the middle for a few weeks/longer while he builds match fitness?

Or not according to Sky hes just arrived at Villa for a medical and Chelsea have agreed to keep paying the majority of his wages :pac:

would be an interesting punt as a free, albeit hefty wage.

I'm just reading it now. Crazy stuff! He's played two games in the last 18 months and Villa want to put him straight into the first team.

Glenn Whelan has left Hearts by mutual consent, four months after first signing for the club.

I would hazard a guess that Dortmund wanted to cut his wages on the basis of his injuries. It's a shame but Gotze is a shadow of the player he was as he suffers with myopathy which causes fatigue, weight gain and muscular issues.

Hard to argue from a club perspective but it'll be interesting to see where he ends up.

    Another baffling decision. ****ing hell.

Even discounting Drinkwater's issues, do Villa need another CM? Surely they have other issues to sort out first.

Not seen any words about Gotze in the current season but he was certainly working hard last season albeit playing fewer games as you note so yes for Dortmund with title, CL ambitions he makes little sense but at a lower level he could knit an open attacking side together - Bournemouth (!) would be a pretty good place for his skills.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,085 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I think Gotze is going to go to Hertha Berlin. That metabolsim issue he had really screwed him of his prime years.

Very possible! Sane is very close to being back for City now. He's been five months out with knee ligament damage.

Simeone has gotten some gold out of attackers that nobody else could really get much out of (Turan, Diego, latter day Torres) but thenthere's been some really underwhelming Atletico careers from some very highly rated players (Lemar, Vitolo ect.)

Hardly an appalling deal for Danny himself though, 6M euro or so a year for a limited player, nice of you can get it.

With McGinn out longterm I can see why they've gone for Danny D.

Well, sure. No doubt it was financially beneficial.

Beyond that, though, it was a disaster. He went from being a highly rated, international CM to being a punchline in just a few seasons.

Can't if Drinkwater loan goes through.

Don't think if it was going to happen anyway, he would have had loads of options.

Reportedly a €12m fee. Always liked this player. He was Salzburg's main man in the pre-Haaland days. Never got much of a chance at Sevilla for whatever reason. Think he'll do well in the Bundesliga.

Unusual one this - Bayern attempted to sign Wilf Zaha on loan before signing permanently in the summer. Palace, unsurprisingly, said no. Text is from the Guardian.
Crystal Palace have rejected an attempt by Bayern Munich to sign Wilfried Zaha on loan until the end of the season, with the Premier League club determined not to allow their prized asset to leave for less than £80m.

The German champions held talks this week with the Ivory Coast forward’s new agent, Pini Zahavi, who is attempting to secure Zaha’s departure from Selhurst Park after proposed moves to Arsenal and Everton failed to materialise in the summer.

Bayern, who will face Chelsea in the Champions League last 16, offered to take the 27-year-old on loan with a view to signing him permanently in the summer, although it is understood that proposal was immediately dismissed.

Bayern are still hopeful of signing Leroy Sané from Manchester City at the end of the season, having failed last summer, but could return to Zaha if unsuccessful. Palace have reluctantly accepted that Zaha can leave if a club matches his valuation yet, with Chelsea’s interest reported to have cooled, it remains to be seen whether he will move this month.

Also, Darron Randolph's return to West Ham has been put on hold due to injury.

I'm on record as hoping he stays put and continues to play regular football for the benefit of the Irish national side but obviously I'd rather that he stays out of choice and not because he's injured!! [also from the Guardian]
Darren Randolph’s £4m move to West Ham has been delayed so that further checks can be done on a thigh injury that has kept the Middlesbrough goalkeeper out in recent weeks.

West Ham still anticipate making Randolph their first signing of the January transfer window but the Republic of Ireland international is yet to pass a medical and the deal is on hold for the time being.

While the problem is not thought to be serious enough to stop the transfer going through this month, the London Stadium club are treading with caution as they seek cover for Lukasz Fabianski.

Hammers also chasing Joe Allen but haven't met Stoke's asking price of £12 million yet (seems a reasonable price IMO) and Gedson Fernandes, a Benfica midfielder that I am unfamiliar with.
